Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the band formally begin calling itself Journey?

Answer: 1973

Herbie Herbert, their soon-to-be road manager, was instrumental in helping put Neal Schon together with the rest of the group that would become Journey.
2. Greg Rollie, Ross Valory, and Neal Schon were ALL members of Santana before joining Journey.

Answer: false

Tricky question. Ross was never in Santana. In 1970, Neal was invited to join Santana and Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes, choosing Santana, of course. He was only 16 years old at the time!
3. Who suggested the band be called Journey?

Answer: An associate of the band's manager

There WAS a name-the-band contest on the radio station, though it apparently didn't produce any appealing options.
4. Which is the correct order of appearance as Journey's lead vocalist?

Answer: Greg Rollie, Robert Fleischman, Steve Perry, Steve Augeri

Rollie sang lead on the first 3 albums. Fleischman came in to tour after the "Next" album was released, and then helped write some tunes that eventually ended up on the "Infinity" album, though Steve Perry was brought in to sing on those and all subsequent recordings until "Trial by Fire", his last with the band.
5. Prairie Prince left as Journey's original drummer to rejoin The Tubes. Aynsley Dunbar joined and performed on the first few Journey albums. Why did he leave the band?

Answer: His style of playing was too complex to fit Journey's songs

Schon, "He was phenomenal ... an octopus on drums, but was playing too much." Aynsley's credits include performances with David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Jefferson Starship, Whitesnake, Pat Travers, and many others.
6. Who was drummer Steve Smith playing for immediately before he was asked to join Journey?

Answer: Montrose

Perry and Schon saw Steve Smith performing with with guitarist Ronnie Montrose and his group, who were touring with Journey in 1978 on the "Infinity" Tour. Smith also had previously played with jazz-fusion violinist Ponty. Steve Smith was already a fan of Journey's music, owning some of their albums.
7. Robert Fleischman was replaced as lead vocalist by Steve Perry, who first sang on which Journey album?

Answer: Infinity

This 1978 album made huge strides into the pop market with tunes like "Lights", "Feeling That Way", "Anytime", and "Wheel In The Sky." The lyrics of the last tune came partly from the words of a poem written by Diane Valory, wife of bassist Ross.
8. Immediately before joining Journey, what was Steve Perry's day job?

Answer: Working on a farm

Steve left his band, Alien Project, dejected after the bass player died and ten years' of efforts to make it in music. He was working on a farm and playing in clubs at night when he got a phone call from Journey's manager.
9. Why did Greg Rollie leave the band?

Answer: He decided he was tired of the endless touring

After the 1980 "Departure" tour, Greg left Journey.
10. What band was Greg's replacement, Jonathon Cain, playing with when he got asked to join Journey?

Answer: The Babys

The Babys were opening for Journey on the "Departure" Tour, and Greg figured Jonathon's talents at keys AND guitar would be a perfect fit. He certainly was right!
11. How extensive was Jonathon Cain's input into songs on his first album with the band, "Escape"?

Answer: He co-wrote every song

In addition to his musicianship, Jonathon's songwriting skills were a huge bonus to Journey.
12. Which song was the first Journey tune to make it into Billboard's Top 20?

Answer: Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'

Off of the "Evolution" album. "Wheel" and "Lights" were off the previous album, neither reaching higher than number 57. "Open Arms" was a later hit off of the "Escape" album.
13. On which song are the keyboards played by NEITHER Greg Rollie or Jonathon Cain?

Answer: The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)

This studio-recorded song was added to the live album "Captured", when the band was between keyboard players. Session player Tim Gorman filled in on keys for that one song.
14. In the late '90s, Journey did the unthinkable, and replaced Steve Perry. Why?

Answer: Steve had health problems and unable to tour

Steve was facing hip replacement surgery, and wanted to time off. Neil and Jonathon wanted very badly to tour again, so the brought in Steve Augeri, who looked and sang very similar to Perry.
15. By December 2008, how many Journey studio albums had been released, excluding compilations and live albums?

Answer: 13
