1. Before they settled on the name of Journey, what was the original name they were known as?

Answer: The Golden Gate Rhythm Section

The name of the band was The Golden Gate Rhythm Section, before they settled on the name Journey. Shortly after leaving Santana, production manager Herbie Herbert got a few local San Francisco musicians together which included George Tickner and Ross Valory (formerly of Fumious Bandersnatch), Prairie Prince (formerly with The Tubes), and ex-Santana guitar sensation Neal Schon.

Then soon after he would persuade ex-Santana keyboard/vocalist Gregg Rolie to join the rest of the band as well. After playing a number of shows, Prairie Prince chose to return to The Tubes.

Herbie then found Aynsley Dunbar (formerly with Frank Zappa) to take his place.
2. Which title was Journey's first successful album?

Answer: Infinity

It was "Infinity", their fourth album, released in 1978 and was also the first album that displayed Steve Perry on vocals. The album generated three hit singles "Wheel In The Sky", "Lights" and "Anytime".

After Gregg Rolie chose to depart the band, they replaced him with Jonathan Cain who fit in impeccably, co-writing all the songs. From the beginning, "Escape" was a smash with the release of the ballad "Who's Cryin Now", followed by "Don't Stop Believin'" and their biggest hit single "Open Arms." The album reached #1 in its second month of release and in time sold more than 9 million copies.

It was "Open Arms", released January of 1982, it was their highest charting single. It hit the Billboard Top 40 and peaked at #2 for six consecutive weeks only to be denied the #1 position by "Centerfold" by the J. Geils Band and "I Love Rock And Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
5. Steve Perry had contracted throat Cancer.

Steve Perry did not have throat cancer. During the writing and recording of the album "Raised On Radio", Steve's mother was diagnosed with cancer and occasionally he took time away from the band to be with her and to take her to the clinic. He did, however, get a bad case of asthmatic bronchitis.
6. Steve Smith played percussion on all the albums that Steve Perry appeared on from "Infinity" to "Trial By Fire."

Answer: False

Actually, Steve didn't play on "Infinity," it was Aynsley Dunbar whose last performance was on September 2, 1978 with the band.
7. Has Journey ever won a Grammy Award?

Answer: No

Actually, they have not. But in 1996 they actually came close, the band finally received their first nomination with the release of their reunion album, "Trial By Fire". The song "When You Love A Woman" was nominated in the category for 'Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal'. But the honor went to The Beatles for "Free As A Bird".

Answer: Jacksonville, Florida

Although they did tour in Jacksonville that year, none of the recordings from there were chosen to be on the album.

Actually it would be Steve Perry who was born on January 22, 1949, Ross Valory would be a very close second with his birth on February 2, 1949. Jonathan Cain was born on February 26, 1950 and Neal Schon is the youngest out of these for being born on February 27, 1954.

Neal did sit in one night with Derek and the Dominoes while they were performing at the Berkeley Community Theater, Carlos Santana asked Neal to join his band and Neal accepted the offer when he was just 15 years old.
