Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Beatles song ends with the line: "The love you take is equal to the love you make"?

Answer: The End

The penultimate song on the 1969 album "Abbey Road", "The End" is actually the end of a sixteen-minute medley that starts with the song "You Never Give Me Your Money". The last line of "The End" was featured on the TV show "Saturday Night Live" in a skit where Chris Farley interviewed Paul McCartney and asked him if it was true. Farley also asked McCartney if the "Paul is dead" rumors were a hoax.
2. The sultry video for this 1989 song added to its appeal. Which song finishes with the depressing line: "Nobody loves no one"?

Answer: Wicked Game

Chris Isaak wrote and performed the song, and he appeared in the music video with supermodel Helene Christensen. The song was also featured in the 1990 movie "Wild at Heart". "Wicked Game" has been covered by other artists including a version by R.E.M.
3. Which Guns N' Roses song ends with the line: "It's going to take some time, to heal the broken memories, that another man would need, just to survive"?

Answer: Coma

"Coma" was featured on the "Use Your Illusion I" album, which was first released in 1991. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award the following year, and sold over seven million copies in the USA alone. Hard to believe but the song may have been about their drug use...
4. This song was a hit for Nine Inch Nails in 1994 and for a country music legend in 2002. Which haunting song ends with the line: "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find a way"?

Answer: Hurt

Trent Reznor wrote "Hurt" and called it his "most personal song". He thus said it felt a bit invasive to hear the remake of the song although he was very honored by it. Johnny Cash's stark version of "Hurt" was accompanied with a melancholy video that won a Grammy for video of the year. It also introduced the Man in Black to a whole new audience.
5. Which quirky 1965 song ends with the line: "The pump don't work 'cause the vandals took the handles"?

Answer: Subterranean Homesick Blues

Bob Dylan wrote and performed the song. He claimed that the stream-of-consciousness lyrics were inspired by Chuck Berry and the scat songs from the 1940s. A video of the song was produced for the movie "Don't Look Back", and the theme of Dylan holding up cue cards with various words from the song on them was also used by Inxs for their song "Mediate" and by "Weird Al" Yankovic for his songs "UHF" and "Bob".
6. Which song on Pearl Jam's blockbuster debut album ends with the melancholy lyrics: "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why can't it be mine"?

Answer: Black

Ok, it doesn't quite end with that line; there's another two minutes of "whys" and "yeahs" and "oohs" and "ahhs" and such. Written by Eddie Vedder and Stone Gossard, the song appeared on Pearl Jam's debut album, "Ten". Lead singer Vedder stated that the song was inspired by a band called the American Music Club.
7. Which 1954 song, first recorded by Kaye Ballard, ends with these lyrics: "You are all I long for, all I worship and adore, in other words, please be true, in other words, in other words, I love you"?

Answer: Fly Me to the Moon

"Fly Me to the Moon" was written by Bart Howard. It has been recorded by many artists over the years, with perhaps the best known version being that made by Frank Sinatra for his 1964 album "It Might as Well be Swing". Sinatra's version was actually played on the moon during the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing.
8. A lover's triangle was the inspiration for this 1970 classic. Which song's last lyric (other than the chorus) is "Please don't say we'll never find a way and tell me all my love's in vain"?

Answer: Layla

"Layla" was recorded by Derek and the Dominoes. The band featured Eric Clapton, who wrote the song about Pattie Boyd, the wife of his best friend, George Harrison of the Beatles. Boyd eventually left Harrison for Clapton, but they too went their separate ways.

The song "Something" was also reportedly written about Pattie Boyd by her then-husband Harrison, although he later claimed he'd written it about Ray Charles or a dog, depending on the story.
9. Which 1967 song ends with the lyric: "Joltin' Joe has left and gone away, hey hey hey, hey hey hey"?

Answer: Mrs. Robinson

Performed by Simon and Garfunkel, the Paul Simon-penned song was recorded for the film "The Graduate". Simon was originally writing the song as a general nostalgia piece about days gone by and the lyrics referenced "Mrs. Roosevelt", but he changed it when asked to write a song for the film. Simon sang the song at a tribute to "Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio following the baseball player's death.
10. Which song, played on the very first day that the MTV station began broadcasting, has these lines at the end of the final verse before the chorus: "If you're out of luck or out of work, we could send you to Johannesburg"?

Answer: Oliver's Army

"Oliver's Army" was written by Elvis Costello, and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart on its first release in 1979. It has been covered by various other artists, but has "fallen out of favour" somewhat as the lyrics mention a racial epithet that is very much frowned upon nowadays.
11. Which 1987 Bruce Springsteen song ends with the line: "God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of"?

Answer: Brilliant Disguise

The song appeared on his "Tunnel of Love" album which was his follow-up to his hugely successful "Born in the USA" album. Springsteen's first marriage to actress Julianne Phillips was falling apart, and the songs on the album, including "Brilliant Disguise" reflected the "love gone wrong" theme.
12. It wasn't easy to understand the lyrics in this grunge anthem. Which 1991 song ends with: "A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial"?

Answer: Smells like Teen Spirit

Written and performed by Nirvana, lead singer Kurt Cobain claimed the song had no particular meaning; it was just contradictory ideas. The unusual song has had a few cover versions by artists including Patti Smith and Tori Amos, and even spawned a "Weird Al" Yankovic parody which alluded to the difficulty in understanding lyrics due to Cobain's mumbling: "It's unintelligible, I just can't get it through my skull, it's hard to bargle nawdle zouss, with all these marbles in my mouth".
13. Which of Spandau Ballet's 1983 hit songs ends with the chorus: "Glad that you're bound to return, there's something I could have learned. You're indestructible, always believe in..." ?

Answer: Gold

Undoubtedly Spandau Ballet's most popular and critically acclaimed album is "True". "Gold" was the second single to be released from this album, after the eponymous "True". It managed to peak at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in '83. Additionally, it reached #3 on the Netherlands Singles Chart, and #8 on the New Zealand Singles Chart.
14. Which 2008 hit from Coldplay ends with: "For some reason I can't explain, I know Saint Peter won't call my name. Never an honest word, but that was when I ruled the world" ?

Answer: Viva La Vida

"Viva La Vida", which in Spanish means "long live life", was written by all four members of the band, contains numerous references to biblical characters and events, resulting in some debate over the meaning behind the song. It was the second single to be released from their 2008 album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends", this first being "Violet Hill", which follows on directly from "Viva La Vida" on the album.
15. Which 1980s song, which rather strangely burst back into the limelight in the late 2000s, assured us in the final lines of the chorus that the artist was "Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie and hurt you"?

Answer: Never Gonna Give You Up

"Never Gonna Give You Up" was a global hit for Rick Astley in 1987, securing the number one spot on over twenty charts across the world. There was a resurgence across the internet in the late 2000s and the song made a comeback with the peculiar but phenomenally popular act of "Rickrolling", whereby web users were redirected to the music video for the song upon clicking a seemingly relevant or cleverly disguised link.
