Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Kinks had a 1967 hit record entitled '... Sunset' the missing word is a famous London railway station can you tell me which one?

Answer: Waterloo

'Waterloo Sunset' by The Kinks, reaching #2 in the UK charts and hitting the top 10 in much of the rest of Europe, but not charting in the US, is the story of two lovers walking across a bridge spanning the Thames, the story being sung by a person watching them. (one of their best in my opinion).
The song was originally to be named 'Liverpool Sunset' but Ray Davies thought there were too many songs about Liverpool already. (Thanks to Dalgleish for that little titbit).

Waterloo Station was opened in 1848 and is the largest station in the UK and with 88 million passengers in 2008 is also the busiest. Strangely it doesn't feature on the original English Monopoly board.
2. Gerry Rafferty had a 1978 hit record with a song about a famous London thoroughfare which, famously, was home to a fictional detective. Which roadway was this? '... Street'

Answer: Baker

Of course, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes resided at 221b Baker Street.

Gerry Rafferty's song was released in 1978 reaching #3 in the UK and #2 in the US.
3. Which American singer had a UK top 20 hit in 1966 with a record entitled 'England Swings', which included the verse: 'England swings like a pendulum do, Bobbies on bicycles, two by two, Westminster Abbey, the tower of Big Ben, The rosy red cheeks of the little children.'

Answer: Roger Miller

Reaching #1 in the US 'Adult Contemporary' charts and #13 in the UK 'England Swings' was one of a number of hits for Roger Miller, the singer best known for his rendition of 'King of the Road'.
4. In 1979 the 'Electric Light Orchestra'(ELO) had a #8 hit in the UK, #39 on the US 'Billboard' charts with: 'Last Train to...' but where did they want to go?

Answer: London

E.L.O. a Birmingham (UK) band who, according to "http://www.jefflynnesongs.com/elousasingles"
hold the distinction of having the most top 40 'Billboard' hits without ever hitting the #1 spot.
5. The 1937 musical 'Me and My Girl' introduced a song which is still well known today.(especially at English weddings etc) Famous for the exclamation 'OI!' at the end of each verse, can you complete the title? 'Doin' the Lambeth...'

Even the then King George along with Queen Elizabeth (The mother of Queen Elizabeth the second) were heard to join in with the OI! when they went to view a performance of 'Me and My Girl'.
6. In 1978 a record entered the US top 40 charts peaking at #21, well known in the UK can you tell me who recorded 'Werewolves of London'?

Answer: Warren Zevon

Who could forget these great (?) lyrics?

"He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amok in Kent
Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim
I'd like to meet his tailor"
7. Now we move to 1984 and a British band who had a worldwide hit with a song called 'West End Girls'. Which pop duo was this?

Answer: Pet Shop Boys

From the Album 'Please' and reaching the heady heights of #1 in both the UK AND the US, this track won the award for the 'Song of the Decade' between the years 1985 and 1994 as issued by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. (I never realised British music had sunk that low)
8. In which square in London did a nightingale reputedly sing in a popular 1940's song?

Answer: Berkeley

'A Nightingale Sang in Berkerley Square', well known in England as sang by Vera Lynn, in America it was probably best known for being played by Glenn Miller.
It was also the title of a 1979 film starring, among others, David Niven and Oliver Tobias.
9. A song released in 1978 by The Jam, a British band which did not appear to have a lot of success in the US, was entitled "Down in the ----- at Midnight" what are the missing word /words?

Answer: Tube station

The 'Tube' is, of course, London's underground railway system.
10. This track is not strictly about London but is about the M25 motorway that encloses London. Written and performed by Chris Rea the title is 'The Road to ...' Where does the road go?

Answer: Hell

Allegedly this song was conceived by Chris Rea whilst sitting in one of the M25's notorious traffic jams. It reached #10 in England and #11 on the US 'Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks' charts in 1989.
