Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'That's what all the young folks are doing all the while' - but what exactly was the singer of this hit referring to?

Answer: Putting On The Style

All were 1950's UK number ones, but Lonnie Donegan was referring to 'Putting On The Style', which as a double A-side with 'Gamblin' Man' hit the top spot in 1957.
2. Complete the lyric 'She's a walking talking work of art'...

Answer: she's the girl who stole my heart

'Venus In Blue Jeans' was a #7 hit on Billboard for Jimmy Clanton in 1962, his last top 40 entry. Mark Wynter covered the song in Britain and took it to #4 for his biggest UK hit.
3. Name the artist who had a UK hit with the song featuring the lyrics 'Come to the station, jump on the train, march at the double, down lovers lane'.

Answer: Anne Shelton

Anne Shelton hit the top spot in 1956 with 'Lay Down Your Arms'. She was a singer of some repute, having success with Ambrose and his orchestra. The Chordettes' version of the song reached #16 on Billboard.
4. For a bit of variation, which group were being imitated in the lyric 'I don't want to go to work on me bike in the rain'?

Answer: The Bachelors

The lyric comes from a song called 'Pop Go The Workers' by The Barron Knights, a #5 hit in 1965. The Barron Knights were a comedy group who had a succession of hits with amusing medleys based on contemporary tunes, sung in the style of the original artists. The lyric in question comes from their adaptation of The Bachelors' 'I Wouldn't Trade You For The World'.
5. Which of these songs begins with the lyric 'Hey hey baby, where d'you think you're running to'?

Answer: Don't You Think Its Time

'Don't You Think Its Time' was a UK #6 hit for Mike Berry and The Outlaws in 1963. The song was another successful Joe Meek production, following the likes of 'Telstar' by The Tornadoes and 'Johnny Remember Me' by John Leyton.
6. Name the artist who had a transatlantic hit with a song featuring the lyrics 'You twinkle above us, we twinkle below'.

Answer: Oliver

'Good Morning Starshine' took Oliver into the US and UK top ten in 1969. The song reached #3 on the Hot 100 on #6 on the British chart.
7. Which of these songs features the lyrics 'Love has waited such a long time, now we're a kiss apart'?

Answer: Almost There

'Almost There' was a big hit for Andy Williams in the UK. In 1965, it reached #2 yet missed out on the Billboard top 40, which surprises me as its a lovely ballad.
8. Back to the fifties again now - Which artist had a hit with a song that included the following in its lyrics, 'I love the hills, I love the prairie, I love Jane and I love Mary'?

Answer: Guy Mitchell

That one takes us back to 1953 when 'Pretty Little Black-Eyed Susie' took Guy Mitchell to #2 on the UK chart. Mitchell actually appeared on the first and last UK charts of the 1950s with 'Feet Up!' and 'Heartaches By The Number', with plenty of hits in between too.
9. Who had a hit featuring the lyrics 'If I, I, I don't find my love I know I shall die, die, die 'cause I love her so'?

Answer: Bryan Johnson

Bryan Johnson was the UK's 1960 Eurovision contender with 'Looking High High High'. The song also scraped into the top twenty.
10. And finally... the lyrics 'I stare into emptiness, I'm filled with such loneliness' come from which song?

Answer: The Minute You're Gone

All UK top ten hits for Cliff Richard, 'The Minute You're Gone' went all the way to #1 in 1965.

Now that was a tough quiz! Hope you enjoyed the challenge and were reminded of a few more songs you might have forgotten. Let me know how you got on and keep your eyes peeled for part eleven, which will include more US chart references.
