Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band, formerly called the Fydallions, had a Number 12 US hit in 1969 with "More Today Than Yesterday"?

Answer: The Spiral Starecase

The Fydallions formed in California in 1969 and were playing lounge gigs when Columbia Records rep Gary Usher heard the band and signed them with the stipulation that they change their name. The band got the inspiration for their name from the movie, "The Spiral Staircase" (1946), but intentionally misspelled "staircase".

While preparing material for their debut album Usher suggested that they use their own material and singer/guitarist Pat Upton composed "More Today Than Yesterday". The song was their only Top Forty hit and the band broke up less than two years later. Upton became a session musician and worked with Ricky Nelson. "Build Me Up Buttercup" was a 1969 US Number Three hit for The Foundations. Crazy Elephant reached the US Number 12 slot with "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" and "Smile A Little Smile For Me" was a Number Five hit in 1969 for The Flying Machine.
2. "One Less Bell to Answer" song was a 1970 US Top Ten for which group?

Answer: The 5th Dimension

Burt Bacharach and Hal David composed "One Less Bell to Answer" for Keely Smith in 1967. Two years later Bones Howe, a producer for The 5th Dimension's label heard the song and included it on the groups 1970 debut album, "Portrait". Marilyn McCoo sang the lead vocals and the song reached Number Two on the US Pop charts. Dionne Warwick released a version in 1972. Harry Elston and Floyd Butler were original members of The 5th Dimension who left before the group had Top Forty hits to form Friends of Distinction.

They subsequently charted with such hits as "Grazing in the Grass" and "Love or Let Me Be Lonely". "The Bells" was a hit for The Originals in 1970. In 1970 Kenny Rogers and The First Edition had a Top Forty hit with "Something's Burnin'".
3. Chris Montez had a US Top Twenty hit in 1966 with "The More I See You". He also charted several other hits in the sixties. Which song was NOT a Chris Montez US Top Forty hit?

Answer: Elusive Butterfly

Hawthorne, California, native Chris Montez was influenced by Ritchie Valens and released the US Number Four hit, "Let's Dance" in 1962. Based on the success of the song he toured with such notables as The Platters, Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. While Chris was touring England with Tommy Roe in the early sixties The Beatles were their opening act.
In 1966 he signed with A&M Records and developed a lighter style. His debut album with A&M featured "Call Me" and "The More I See You". He released three more albums with A&M and had success with singles such as "Time After Time" and "There Will Never Be Another You". Chris later became one of the many artists who primarily performed in Branson.
"Elusive Butterfly" was a 1966 Top Ten hit for Bob Lind.
4. Which artist recorded the 1976 Disco-era song, "More, More, More"?

Answer: The Andrea True Connection

"More, More, More" was a Number Four hit by adult film star and singer Andrea True, recording as The Andrea True Connection. True was a Nashville native who was in Jamaica when she collaborated with a producer she knew named Gregg Diamond to record "More, More, More" in 1976.

The song became a Disco standard and also charted in several European countries. She followed with "N.Y. You Got Me Dancing" the following year but her third album was unsuccessful. She learned that she had a goiter that required surgery on her throat, effectively ending her singing career. "Boogie Oogie Oogie" was recorded by A Taste of Honey, "Le Freak" was a hit by Chic and the Silver Convention recorded "Fly, Robin, Fly".
5. The Captain and Tennille's recording of "Do That To Me One More Time" climbed to the top of the charts in the US in 1980?

Answer: True

The Captain and Tennille bumped Michael Jackson's "Rock with You" from the top spot on in February, 1980, with "Do That To Me One More Time". Toni Tennille composed "Do That To Me One More Time" and Daryl Dragon produced the recording. They had left the A&M label and signed with Casablanca Records after five years.

While selecting material for their first album on Casablanca Toni reluctantly sang a demo of the song, thinking it didn't have enough of a pop feel to impress the personnel at the label.

The producers immediately believed the song would be a hit and when it topped the charts they were proven correct. The duo had previously enjoyed chart-topping success five years earlier with "Love Will Keep Us Together". "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "Do That To Me One More Time" were their only Number One hits.
6. Kai Winding had a Number Eight hit in the US with the instrumental song, "More". Which 1962 movie was the song from?

Answer: Mondo Cane

Riz Ortolani and Nino Oliviero were nominated for an Academy Award in 1963 for their composition, "More", from "Mondo Cane". Artists from Bobby Darin to Herb Alpert have recorded versions of the song, however, Danish trombone player Kai Winding had the best chart success in the US with the song.

The song was recorded while Winding was recording for the Verve label and was one of the earliest songs to feature an electronic instrument called the Ondioline. Winding recorded several albums for various labels before passing in 1983. "Seventy-six Trombones" and "Till There Was You" were two popular songs from the soundtrack of "The Music Man" (1962). "Carnival of Souls" (1962) had a score but did not produce any single releases. Andy Williams released a 1963 US single with the theme from "Charade" (1963).
7. "One More Night" was a Phil Collins release from which 1985 Grammy Award-winning album that also featured the single releases "Sussudio", "Don't Lose My Number" and "Take Me Home"?

Answer: No Jacket Required

"No Jacket Required" was Collins' third solo album and it reached the top slot in the US, spawning several hit singles including "One More Night". "One More Night" was the first single released from the album and topped the US charts on March 30, 1985. "Sussudio" held down the US top spot in July of the same year. "Don't Lose My Number" peaked at Number Four on the US charts in September, 1985, while "Take Me Home" made it to Number Seven in the US. Sting, Helen Terry and Peter Gabriel were among the featured artists on the "No Jacket Required" album. "Hello, I Must Be Going!" was released three years before "No Jacket Required", "Face Value" was Phil's 1981 debut solo album and "But Seriously" came out in 1989.
8. Which Disco singer recorded the duet, "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)", with Barbra Streisand in 1979?

Answer: Donna Summer

Paul Jabara and Bruce Roberts originally composed "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" as "Enough is Enough". An eight-minute version of the song was included on Barbra Streisand's 1979 "Wet" LP and an eleven-minute version was included on Donna's double album, "On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes 1 and 2", the same year. Because Barbra's "Wet" album had a theme about songs relating to water "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" was almost cut from the project. Both versions were certified as Gold Records within a year of release. Anita Ward had a Disco-era hit with "Ring My Bell". Gloria Gaynor had a smash hit with "Survive" and Evelyn "Champagne" King released "Shame".
9. Which duo had a US Top Ten hit in 1983 with "Two Less Lonely People in the World"?

Answer: Air Supply

Air Supply broke the US Top Ten in 1980 with "Lost in Love". The Top Forty single, "Two Less Lonely People in the World", was released in 1983. The song is a release from their 1982 "Now And Forever" album. The album also contained their 1982 Number Five US hit, "Even the Nights Are Better". British singer/guitarist Graham Russell and Australian singer Russell Hitchcock connected while they were both involved with an Australian production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in the mid-seventies.

They formed a duo and got their first big break when Rod Stewart invited them to open for him in the US after they had opened for him in Australia. In 1976 "Sara Smile" was Hall and Oates' first Top Ten US hit. Ashford and Simpson have released over 30 R&B singles since their 1974 release, "(I'd Know You) Anywhere". "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" propelled The Eurythmics to US recognition in 1983.
10. In 1980 Kim Carnes released a hit version of "More Love". Which group had the original hit in the US with the song in 1967?

Answer: Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

Smokey Robinson sang lead on "More Love". He also composed and even produced the recording for The Miracles. He was inspired to write the song by his wife, Claudette. While most of the Motown Records backing tracks were done by the label's session players, the instrumental tracks for "More Love" were actually tracked in Los Angeles.

The song was from their 1967 album, "Make It Happen" and made it to Number 23 on the US Billboard charts. Kim Carnes' version peaked at Number Ten. The Temptations formed as the Elgins and went on to record several classic hits for Motown such as "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg".

The Philadelphia based Stylistics recorded many Soul standards including "You Make Me Feel Brand New". The O'Jays hailed from Ohio and counted "Love Train" and "Back Stabbers" among their hits.
