Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'You see there's nothing behind me. I'm already a has-been. My future ain't what it was. Well I think I know the words that I mean.' - what legendary song are these lyrics from?

Answer: 'Boredom' - Buzzcocks

After the release of their debut mini-album 'Spiral Scratch' singer Howard Devoto left the Buzzcocks, cos he felt they had said everything there was to say. Hard to argue with that as the ep included 'Boredom', one of the most eloquent portrayals of teenage frustration ever. With the greatest two-note guitar solo ever as well.

However, after Devoto left, Pete Shelley took over on vocals and the Buzzcocks still managed to release some pretty impressive records. They are still going by the way. Their latest release wasn't too bad either. Nothing to get too excited about. Just fine.
2. 'I wonder what weŽll do when things go wrong. When weŽre half-way through, our favourite song, we look up and the audience has gone.' - what song is that then?

Answer: 'One Chord Wonders' - the Adverts

This song was a real clarion call for the burgeoning punk scene. The Adverts shouted out they couldn't play and made an energetic racket to prove it. Their bass player - Gaye Advert - was one of the first punk female role models. She's now a civil servant. Shame.
3. 'I don't need anyone. Don't need no mom and dad. Don't need no good advice. Don't need no human rights. I got some news for you ... Don't even need you too.' - what?

Answer: 'Sonic Reducer' - the Dead Boys

There was a lot of dispute about the ownership of this song. When Cleveland, Ohio proto-punkers Rocket From The Tombs split up into Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys everybody claimed to have written the song. Ubu singer David Thomas agreed to let the Dead Boys release their version, but was quite surprised to find in the credits to the song that Dead Boys singer Stiv Bators was also mentioned. Bators had spent a brief time in Rocket From The Tombs, but 'Sonic Reducer' was recorded by them way before that. So, one of those great punk rock anecdotes isn't it? Proves punkers weren't at all sad little thieving bastardos.
4. 'Up on the roof, out on the street. Down in the playground the hot concrete. Bus ride is too slow. They blast out the disco on the radio.' - an easy one, or at least it oughtta be.

Answer: 'Rockaway Beach' - Ramones

It's the Ramones classic. BTW, did you know that the last thing Joey Ramone heard before he died was a track by U2? Apparently he was a big fan and his brother was playing a track from their album that was out at the time when Joey passed away. Sad.
5. 'And you thought that we were faking. That we were all just money making. You do not believe we're for real. Or you would lose your cheap appeal?' - obvious, no?

Answer: 'EMI' - Sex Pistols

The Pistols a-ranting and a-raving against their previous record company. But in the meantime Virgin Records has been bought by EMI, and the Pistols legacy is once more in the hands of the corporate dogs from hell or something.
6. 'Black jack wanna quack. Never get your money back. Pack attack in the back. By a bloody maniac.' - hunh?

Answer: 'Emergency' - 999

999 is one of the most overlooked '77 UK bands. Their debut album (with the hits 'I'm Alive', Emergency' and 'Me & My Desire') was one of the livelier albums of 1978 though. Punk energy, post-punk hooks and poppy angles. What more do you want?
7. 'I'm out a work and I`m outta the dole. I've got no food and my room is cold. Wish I knew what the future holds. Will it always be...' - what social injustice is being fought here?

Answer: 'No Money' - the Boys

One of the better lower echelon '77 UK bands - as they were rather low profile, unkempt and bile-mongering in the background. They released two Christmas albums under the name of The Yobs, where they do 'hilarious' versions of songs like 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' and 'Come all ye Faithful'. Not for the weak-hearted or finely tuned souls.
8. 'Like a snake calling on the phone. I've got no time to be alone. There is someone coming at me all the time. Yeah babe I think I'll lose my mind.' - clue : it's not the theme song to 'Neighbours'.

Answer: '(I'm) Stranded' - the Saints

All Australian bands indeed. The Saints went to England during punks heyday, only to be reviled becos of their long hair. Though they could teach most of the UK bands a thing or two about ferociousness, they did indeed look a wee bit scuzzy. Radio Birdman was the first ever Australian punk band. Laughing Clowns was a band fronted by former Saints-member Ed Kuepper. And the Boys Next Door was Nick Cave's first band.
9. 'I hate Disneyland. Mickey didn't shake my hand. Mickey Mouse is a rat. Mickey Mouse is a rat.' - bet you don't know this one.

Answer: 'Disneyland' - Come On

Come On from New York released this one great and pointy single. Then they disappeared. Though there are rumours of an album of rehearsal tapes by them. But I've never seen one. Have you?
10. 'I was saying let me out of here before I was even born. It's such a gamble when you get a face. It's fascinating to observe what the mirror does. But when I dine it's for the wall that I set a place.'

Answer: 'Blank Generation' - Richard Hell & the Voidoids

Richard Hell - the man who invented the punk look of spiky hair and torn clothes - is now more interested in writing poetry. He's also got a bit of an acting career, ao. he played the dead boyfriend of Madonna in 'Desperately Seeking Susan' (amazing screentime: not even a few seconds).
