The Finnish heavy metal band Amorphis was formed in 1990. The band's initial lineup consisted of lead vocalist / rhythm guitarist Tomi Koivusaari, lead guitarist Esa Holopainen, drummer / keyboardist Jan Rechberger and bassist Olli-Pekka Laine. Additional band members would join at various points throughout the band's history. Amorphis' first album "The Karelian Isthmus" was released in 1992.

In its early years Amorphis' music was more of a death metal genre. Today, their music is considered to be progressive metal.

Amorphis' lineup changed significantly prior to the release of their third album "Elegy" which was released in 1996. "Tuonela", the band's fourth album was released in 1999, this time with Santeri Kallio on the keyboards.

In Finnish mythology, the name Tuonela referred to the realm of the dead. Some other notable songs from "Tuonela" include "The Way" and "Divinity". "Tuonela" was also the last album to feature bassist Olli-Pekka Laine, who departed the band following the album's release. Niclas Etelävuori took over the bassist role for the band's next album "Am Universum", which was released in 2001. Amorphis' original drummer Jan Rechberger returned to the band prior to the release of the album "Far from the Sun" in 2003.

"Brother Moon" was featured on the Amorphis album "Eclipse", which was released in 2006. This was the first album to feature vocalist Tomi Joutsen who took over the role from Pasi Koskinen. Some other notable tracks from "Eclipse" include "House of Sleep", "The Smoke" and "Born from Fire".

Amorphis' album "Silent Waters" was released in 2007. It holds a unique distinction of being the band's first album to be released without any changes to the band's main lineup.
