Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "Although I laugh and I act like a clown Beneath this mask I am wearing a frown My tears are falling like rain from the sky"?

Answer: Is it for her or myself that I cry

After their euphoric and happy songs of their early period, the Beatles began to record more contemplative and even bitter songs, and this one, "I'm a Loser" from "Beatles for Sale" (largely mirrored by the US "Beatles '65"), was a prime example. It's one of Johns Lennon's first songs from his "Bob Dylan phase," and despite the harsh negative tone of the title and the lyrics, it was one of those songs for which he held the most pride during the rest of his lifetime.
2. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "One day you'll find That I have gone But tomorrow may rain"?

Answer: So I'll follow the sun

The "I'll Follow the Sun" ballad released on "Beatles For Sale" was actually written by Paul when he was 16 and still with the Quarrymen, the group he'd formed with John Lennon that eventually took shape as The Beatles. Feeling that they had enough ballads on their earlier albums (mostly covers of other writers' songs), the group resisted releasing this song until 1964.
3. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "She said that living with me Is bringing her down, yeah"?

Answer: For she would never be free when I was around

"Ticket to Ride" from "Help" was a milestone for the Beatles in many ways. It was the first song they did lasting more than three minutes. It was the most musically complex of the songs they'd done to that point, with tempo changes and stutters. They also performed the song on television's Ed Sullivan show in September 1965 in the last episode of that program broadcast in black and white.

Several interesting "stories behind the song" exist, most of them no doubt untrue. One of the most interesting alternative explanations was that the song was inspired by a friend of the group who had an airline ticket to a vacation in the resort town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
4. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "And now my life has changed in oh so many ways My independence seems to vanish in the haze But every now and then I feel so insecure"?

Answer: I know that I just need you like I've never done before

"Help!" from the album and movie of the same name. In their 1965 Hollywood Bowl concert, which was released as a 1977 live album, John goofs this verse up, starting it right but finishing with "But now those days are gone, I'm not so self assured, now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors" from the song's first verse.
5. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh"?

Answer: I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath

"Norwegian Wood" appeared on the "Rubber Soul" album. John Lennon, married to his first wife Cynthia at the time, wrote the song as a composite description of the many affairs he was having. "Norwegian Wood" was the first Beatles song, and probably the first popular song in western culture, to incorporate the sitar.
6. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "Had it been another day I might have looked the other way And I'd have never been aware"?

Answer: But as it is I'll dream of her tonight, di-di-di-di'n'di

The fast-moving and folky-sounding "I've Just Seen a Face" from "Help!" Paul subtitled it "Auntie Gin's Theme" because his Auntie Gin liked it when he was working on it. When his band Wings toured the United States in 1976, and Paul was pointedly trying to carve out a separate post-Beatles identity for himself, this was one of only five Beatles songs he included in his 2 1/2 hour set (the others being "Yesterday," "Lady Madonna," "Blackbird," and "The Long and Winding Road").
7. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be There's a shadow hanging over me"?

Answer: Oh, yesterday came suddenly

"Yesterday," the most-covered Beatles song of all time, began as a Paul McCartney song project titled "Scrambled Eggs," with the lyrics "Scrambled eggs, ooh baby how I love your legs." Making a silk purse from a sow's ear sounds easy in comparison to the evolution those lyrics must have gone through to get to the finished product!
8. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "I told a girl that my prospects were good And she said baby, it's understood Working for peanuts is all very fine"?

Answer: But I can show you a better time

"Drive My Car" was the opening song on 1965's "Rubber Soul," the album that was the first steps into the spectacularly creative period that would produce "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper" in the next two years. Many interpretations exist as to the song's meaning. The obvious one is the one I most prefer - it was just supposed to be a fun song!
9. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "Carve your number on my wall"?

Answer: And maybe you will get a call from me

"If I Needed Someone" was a George Harrison song from "Rubber Soul." Harrison eventually turned into the most spiritual of the Beatles, but over the pretty and catchy tune are lyrics that reflect his selfishness and self-centeredness at the time. The point of the song is "I like you, and if I did need someone, you'd be it - but I don't need anyone right now, so take a number and get in line."
10. In this Beatles lyric, which line comes next: "But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning"?

Answer: When I think of love as something new

"In My Life" was an autobiographical song from John that has been beautifully covered by several artists since the original 1965 "Rubber Soul" version. His early drafts of the lyrics specifically reflected on locations from the Liverpool of his youth, but he removed those references to make the song more universal, and to shift the focus more toward the future.
