Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dream Academy's song "Life In A Northern Town" mentions which U.S. President?

Answer: John F. Kennedy

The lyrics in question state: "They sat on the stoney ground, And he took out a cigarette out, And everyone else came down to listen, He said "In winter 1963, It felt like the world would freeze, With John F. Kennedy and The Beatles". Richard Nixon gets a mention In "Ohio" by Crosby Stills, Nash & Young: "Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming, We're finally on our own, This summer I hear the drumming, Four dead in Ohio". Gerald Ford gets a number of mentions in a blues song by Champion Jack Dupree - "Phone Call". LBJ gets a gong in a song from the "Hair" soundtrack, called "Initials": "L.B.J. took the I.R.T. down to 4th Street U.S.A., When he got there, what did he see?, The youth of America on L.S.D.".
2. The song "Rivers Of Babylon" is performed by?

Answer: Boney M

"Rivers Of Babylon" was a big hit for Boney M in their disco heyday of the late 70s. Don McLean's song "Babylon" was based on the same basic tribal chant, but nonetheless, contained different lyrics. Bananarama and Neil Diamond were simply thrown in as red herrings. Sorry!
3. Which of the artists listed did not perform any of the following songs: "The Only Living Boy In New York", "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City" and "An Englishman In New York"?

Answer: Glen Campbell

Glen did not perform any of the songs listed in the question. However, he did perform songs that refer to Wichita, Phoenix and Galveston! "The Only Living Boy In New York" is a beautiful song by Simon & Garfunkel from their landmark "Bridge Over Troubled Water" album in the early 70s. "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City" is a Nilsson song from one of his quieter moments, and "An Englishman In New York" is a bizarre offering from Godley & Creme, two of the band members from 10CC. Sting also performs a song by the same title, but with different lyrics.
4. Which of the following songs was a hit for Linda Ronstadt?

Answer: Back In The U.S.A.

"Back In The U.S.A." by Linda Ronstadt is from the album "Living In The U.S.A.". Bruce Springsteen released "Born In The U.S.A.", once again from the album of the same name. "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A." is a John Mellencamp tune, and "French Kissing In The U.S.A." is a solo effort from Debbie Harry.
5. Which of these "Highway" songs featured the lyrics "The morning paper had a photograph, Of his burnt out wreck and it made me laugh"?

Answer: Trans-Canada Highway

The lyrics in question from Neil Sedaka's "Trans-Canada Highway": "The morning paper had a photograph, Of his burnt out wreck and it made me laugh, I told the lady but the lady ran, And now the papers say I`m a wanted man on the, Trans-Canada highway, take me home...". "Human Highway" is a Neil Young tune from the album "Comes A Time". "Highway To Hell" is from the Australian heavy metal outfit, AC/DC, and "Gunbarrel Highway" is a track lifted from Midnight Oil's album "Diesel And Dust".
6. Which of these songs is the odd one out?

Answer: Hollywood Nights

"Goodnight Saigon", "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" and "Zanzibar" are all Billy Joel songs. "Hollywood Nights" is performed by Bob Seger.
7. Which of the following "Town" songs was performed the The Seekers?

Answer: Morningtown Ride

The Seekers were an Australian folk group who were arguably the country's first successful overseas musical export, slightly pre-dating the success of the Bee Gees. "A Town Called Malice" was a hit for The Jam. "London Town" and "Costafine Town" were released by Wings and Splinter respectively in the 70s.
8. Which of these following "Country" songs features lyrics containing the name of an Airline? (Note: The Airline continues to exist, but under a diferent name).

Answer: Back In The U.S.S.R.

The Beatles' song "Back In The U.S.S.R." features the opening lyrics "Flew into Miami Beach, B.O.A.C., Didn't get to bed last night, All the way the paper bag was on my knee, Man, I had a dreadful flight". B.O.A.C. stood for British Overseas Aircraft Corporation, which later became British Airways, which subsequently got further shortened to simply "British". "Cambodia" by Kim Wilde was about an Air Force pilot flying missions in that country. I suspect the only flying that occurred in "Ventura Highway" was the type that occurs when you smoke certain substances, given some of the lyrics: "Alligator lizards in the air". I remain unaware of any reference to flight in "Lost In France" by Bonnie Tyler.
9. Which of these "Road" songs makes reference to the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency?

Answer: Copperhead Road

"Copperhead Road" by Steve Earle states, in part: "Well the D.E.A.'s got choppers in the air, I wake up screaming like I'm back over there". "The Old Man Down Down The Road" by John Fogerty, "On The Road Again" by Canned Heat and "Glory Road" by Richard Clapton, so far as I am aware, contain no references to the DEA.
10. Which "Hotel" song was a one-off hit for Voyager in the 70s?

Answer: Halfway Hotel

Never heard from Voyager again, at least in my home country of Australia. Speaking of Oz, "Star Hotel" was a song by Cold Chisel. "Hotel California" was the huge Eagles hit, and "Heartbreak Hotel" was a memorable tune from Elvis Presley.
