Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Start with a Foo Fighter, add a Queen of the Stone Age and mix with a quarter of Led Zeppelin. What is the result?

Answer: Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures were formed in 2009 by Dave Grohl (Nirvana and Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles Of Death Metal) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin).
The band achieved success with their debut self titled album, released in 2009, which was a top ten album in Canada, Australia and New Zealand where it reached number two in the charts.
From the album, the first single, "New Fang" performed well on the rock charts of many countries, especially Canada where it hit number one, and it also won the band a Grammy at the 2011 ceremony, for Best Hard Rock Performance.
2. FFS released their debut self titled album in 2015. The "FF" of the band's name stood for Franz Ferdinand, but which band, successful in the 70s, provided the "S"?

Answer: Sparks

Scottish band Franz Ferdinand released their debut album in 2004 and it soon became a favourite of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, better known as Sparks. Sparks for their part, had been a big influence on Franz Ferdinand when the band first started making music and a mutual appreciation soon developed with the two bands sending each other demo tapes.
Due to conflicting schedules though, it wasn't possible for the bands to get to the studio together for some years and when they finally did, the album "FFS" (2015) was the result. "FFS" gave Sparks their most successful UK album since "Propaganda" (1974) and also performed well in most other European countries.
3. Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Noel Redding were just a few of the "Heavy Friends" that made up the backing group for the debut album from which UK parliamentary candidate?

Answer: Lord Sutch

"Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends" was the title of this 1970 album and it in addition to Page (Led Zeppelin), Beck (The Yardbirds) and Redding (Jimi Hendrix Experience), it also featured several other well known musicians.
Included in these were drummer, John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Rolling Stones keyboard player, Nicky Hopkins and the man who taught Keith Moon to play drums, Carlo Little.
Given the all star, supergroup line up, it is surprising that this album consistently ranks in and occasionally tops any poll of the worst album ever released, but that may be due to the fact that the musicians were under the impression that these were loose jam session demo tapes, designed to showcase the talents of and help the career of Sutch, rather than become an album which most of them disown, and on which Page even denies playing some of the guitar parts.
Sutch, who stood for parliament a record 39 times between 1963 to 1997, would go on issue another musical fiasco in 1972, with the live album, "Hands Of Jack The Ripper", which included Little and Redding once more as well as original Deep Purple members Nick Simper and Ritchie Blackmore and Keith Moon of The Who, none of which were aware that the session was being recorded.
4. In 1973, a former King Crimson member got together with a former member of Mott The Hoople and two former members of Free to create which supergroup?

Answer: Bad Company

Bad Company comprised ex Free members, Paul Rodgers on vocals and Simon Kirke on drums with Mick Ralphs (Mott The Hoople) on guitar and Boz Burrell (King Crimson) on bass.
The band had success right from the start, with their debut album, "Bad Company" (1974) reaching the top ten in UK, Canada, Australia and in USA on the Billboard 200. This run continued through their next four albums until "Rough Diamonds" in 1982 became their first album to not enter the top 20 in USA, Canada or Australia.
5. In 2009, the supergroup Tinted Windows was formed, comprising James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins on guitar, Adam Schlesinger of Fountains Of Wayne on bass, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick on drums and which former boy band member on vocals?

Answer: Taylor Hanson (Hanson)

Tinted Windows self titled debut album was released in 2009 to generally positive reviews, mainly due to the infectious nature of Taylor Hanson. Online music site Allmusic singled Hanson out by saying, "Of all the guys here, he is the only one to never have performed in a guitar-heavy rock & roll band, and his thrill to be singing these sweet melodies over these big, fuzzy guitars can be infectious." Sadly, for all involved, the public weren't as enamoured as the reviewers and the album was not a huge success commercially and with the death of Schlesinger in 2020 from COVID-19, the band officially disbanded to concentrate on other projects.
6. One of the strangest supergroups has to be the band formed in 2006 by Sebastian Bach, Ted Nugent, Scott Ian, Evan Seinfeld and Jason Bonham for the VH1 TV show "Supergroup". What was the name of this band?

Answer: Damnocracy

Damnocracy were formed for the show in 2006 and disbanded in 2010, according to Bach because Nugent "didn't wanna make the band a real thing. He's got way too many animals to kill".
During their four years together the band released no official material, although rough demos of three songs were uploaded to MySpace.
The TV show lasted for just seven episodes in 2006, so what the band spent the rest of their time doing after the show before disbanding is anyone's guess. No studio time and they didn't tour either, although at the end of the TV show, they did play a one off gig at the Empire Ballroom in Las Vegas, but the setlist included just one original track in "Take It Back" with the rest being covers of AC/DC as well as tracks from their past glories.

Sebastian Bach quote from "Blabbermouth.net"
7. Living Loud were a short lived supergroup between 2004 and 2005. The band was made up of Ozzy Osbourne's bass player, Bob Daisley, Uriah Heep drummer Lee Kerslake, Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse and one of the finest vocalists to come from Australia. Who was the frontman for this band?

Answer: Jimmy Barnes (Cold Chisel)

Revenge was the reason behind Living Loud, a supergroup brought to life by Bob Daisley, who had, along with Kerslake co written many of the songs on Ozzy's albums, "Blizzard of Ozz" (1980) and "Diary Of A Madman" (1981).
When Ozzy reissued these albums in 2002, Daisley's bass playing and Kerslake's drumming were over dubbed by their replacements in the band, so Daisley hit upon the idea of reissuing the tracks himself, as one of the original songwriters.
With this in mind, Living Loud was born and their only studio album the self titled "Living Loud" was released in 2004, featuring six Ozzy tracks, including "Mr. Crowley" (1980) and "Crazy Train" (1980) alongside five tracks written by Living Loud.
The album also featured a guest appearance from Deep Purple keyboard player, Don Airey.
8. Hindu Love Gods had several different incarnations as a live band, but on their only album, "Hindu Love Gods" in 1990, the line up was Bill Berry, Peter Buck and Mike Mills of R.E.M along with which greatly under rated vocalist?

Answer: Warren Zevon

Hindu Love Gods started life in 1984 as a side project for the guys from R.E.M, alongside Bryan Cook of the band Time Toy, who were from R.E.M's home town of Athens, Georgia.
After their first live show, R.E.M vocalist Michael Stipe sat in as drummer for a few gigs, alongside vocalist Warren Zevon, and later in 1984 a line up of Bill Berry, Peter Buck and Mike Mills plus Cook and Zevon recorded two tracks, intended to be released as a single.
The band then went their separate ways, reuniting just once in 1986, minus Zevon but with Stipe for a one off show.
In 1987, the R.E.M trio of Buck, Berry and Mills were guesting on Zevon's "Sentimental Hygiene" album, when they got together to record ten tracks, which although not originally intended for release, came out as the debut album from Hindu Love Gods in 1990.
The album didn't perform especially well, but the band did attract attention with the single from the disc, a cover of Prince's "Raspberry Beret" (1985) which reached the top 30 in the Billboard Modern Rock charts in USA.
9. In 2000, Les Claypool of Primus joined forces with Trey Anastasio of Phish and Stewart Copeland of The Police to form which alternative rock supergroup?

Answer: Oysterhead

Claypool was asked to form a band to play at the 2000 New Orleans Jazz Fest and contacted Anastasio almost immediately. The pair soon realised they had a mutual hero in Copeland so the logical step seemed to be to contact him. Copeland agreed to join the band for this one off gig, but the trio found that they enjoyed the experience so much that Oysterhead became a semi solid band, touring and also recording an album.
The album, "The Grand Pecking Order" was released in 2001 and met with good reviews, although chart wise, it only reached number 41 on the Billboard 200 in USA.
To promote the album's release, the band played several dates in USA, and although some were disrupted due the 9/11 attacks these live shows were well received, with most completely sold out.
In 2006, the boys reunited for a one off gig at the Bonnaroo Music Festival before going quiet again until 2020, when a multi date USA tour was scheduled, including Bonnaroo and the Scranton Peach Festival, but this tour had to be rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
10. Supergroup, SuperHeavy featured Joss Stone, Dave Stewart, A. R. Rahman, Damian Marley and Mick Jagger. On the bands second single, "Satyameva Jayathe" (2011) Jagger can be heard singing in which language?

Answer: Sanskrit

SuperHeavy was a Dave Stewart concept in which Jagger was driving force, with the intention of taking different musical styles and showing how well they could work together. The band released their self titled debut album in 2011 and released the singles "Miracle Worker" and "Satyameva Jayathe" (both 2011) from it.
"Satyameva Jayathe" received much praise in India, with Jagger being singled out for his willingness to sing in an unfamiliar language, while "Miracle Worker" was a minor hit in many countries and a top ten hit in both Japan and Poland.
