Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these singers had a number one hit in 1964 with "Oh Pretty Woman"?

Answer: Roy Orbison

Roy Orbison could do little wrong in the '60s. "Oh Pretty Woman" was his seventh top-ten hit and his third number one. After a fairly barren time through the '70s, his star seemed to back in the ascendancy in the '80s. His untimely death in 1988 was a great loss to music.
2. Which reggae legend's first British hit was "No Woman No Cry" in 1975?

Answer: Bob Marley

"No Woman No Cry" got to number eight in 1975, the first of over twenty hit singles in Britain for Bob Marley. Many of them were posthumous as sadly Bob died in 1981.
3. "Black Magic Woman" has been covered a few times, most notably by Santana, but who charted with it first in 1968?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac were stalwarts of the burgeoning British blues scene back in the 'sixties; "Black Magic Woman" was their first hit single, reaching number 27 in 1968.
4. A great 'misheard lyric' for the title of this one, "Bald-Headed Woman"! Unfortunately the real title is "More Than a Woman". Can you remember who had the hit in 1978?

Answer: Tavares

Written by the brothers Gibb and featured in the movie "Saturday Night Fever", Tavares reached number seven with this dico favourite (The Bee Gee's version was also in the film). My favourite version is by Johnny 5 in the movie "Short Circuit".
5. Which ex-Beatle had a number one hit with a song simply called "Woman"?

Answer: John Lennon

Sadly this is becoming a bit of a theme; "Woman" was a posthumous number one for John Lennon in January 1981, a few short weeks after he was shot dead in New York.
6. Which of these colourful-sounding groups charted in 1971 with "Strange Kind of Woman"?

Answer: Deep Purple

A top-ten hit for the hard-rockers following the success of "Black Night". "Strange Kind of Woman" got to number eight. Deep Purple were more of an album band and had many top-ten selling long-players including three number ones.
7. Who told us that she was a "Woman in Love" in 1980?

Answer: Barbra Streisand

Another writing credit for Barry and Robin Gibb, "Woman in Love" was Barbra Streisand's only UK number one single. She did, however notch up five number one albums.
8. This is a real soul classic, it was a top-ten hit in the 'sixties and then again in the 'eighties, can you recall who sang "When a Man Loves a Woman"?

Answer: Percy Sledge

Number one in the States in 1966, and a number four in Britain, "When a Man Loves a Woman" was re-released in 1987 and just missed out on top spot, getting to number two in March of that year.
9. Which band, originally from Birmingham UK, warned us about an "Evil Woman" in 1976?

Answer: Electric Light Orchestra

"Evil Woman" was a third top-ten hit for the Brummie orchestrally-based outfit. They were to total fifteen top-ten hits, but only hit the number one when they teamed up with Olivia Newton-John for "Xanadu".
10. Which British act scored a number thirteen hit in 1974 with "Long Legged Woman Dressed in Black"?

Answer: Mungo Jerry

Mungo Jerry are probably best remembered for their 1970 number one hit, "In the Summertime", but they also hit the top with "Baby Jump" in the following year.
The Hollies had a number 26 hit with a similarly entitled "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" in 1972. I wonder if it was about the same girl?
