Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Use some of the letters in DEUTERONOMY to answer this question: How many of the ten lepers healed by Jesus returned to give thanks? (Luke 17:11-19)

Answer: one

Only one of the ten lepers, a Samaritan, returned to Jesus to give thanks after being healed, according to Scripture. The other nine did not return.

The ten lepers begged Jesus to heal them after He encountered them outside an unnamed village, along the border of Galilee and Samaria. Jesus responded by requesting the lepers to "go, show yourselves to the priests." As they proceeded on their way to show themselves to the priests, a miracle happened as Scripture reports they were suddenly healed of their leprosy. According to notes in the NIV Study Bible, showing oneself to the priests was a normal procedure after a cure. (Further information about showing oneself to the priests can be found in Leviticus 13:2-3 and 14:2-32.)

However, one of the healed lepers opted to return to give thanks to Jesus after he noticed he was healed, as per Luke 17:15. According to verse 16, the man was a Samaritan. This is noteworthy because Jews and Samaritans largely despised each other in Biblical times. However, it would not be uncommon to see Jewish and Samaritan lepers living together, especially along the border between Galilee and Samaria. The lepers were despised by everyone, it seems, and it made sense for them to live together. Although there was a major rift between the Jews and Samaritans in Biblical times, the four Gospels continually speak about Jesus looking favorably on the Samaritans. Some examples that leap to mind are the Samaritan woman at the well and the Parable of the Good Samaritan.
2. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to answer this question: According to Genesis 42:3, how many of Joseph's brothers went to Egypt on their first trip to buy grain?

Answer: ten

Ten of Joseph's brothers went to Egypt to obtain food. However, Benjamin, the youngest of Jacob's 12 sons, did not travel with the group. According to Genesis 42:4, Jacob refused to allow Benjamin to travel with his brothers "lest some calamity befall him." The ten sons who traveled to Egypt were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar and Zebulun.
3. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to fill in the missing word from Mark 10:15 in the NIV Bible: "Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never ____ it."

Answer: enter

The missing word is 'enter'. The verse in question quotes Jesus responding to the Twelve Disciples. The disciples had rebuked Him for allowing people to bring children to Him. (In Biblical times, children were to be seen, not heard.)

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state this about the verse in question: "Children exhibit sincerity, eagerness, a trusting attitude and total dependence on their parents. This childlikeness is a fitting comparison for the qualities a disciple should have."

To put things in context, here's how Mark 10:13-16 reads in the NKJV Bible: "Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, 'Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.' And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them."
4. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to fill in the missing word from Esther 3:10 in the NIV Bible: "So the king took his signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the _____ of the Jews."

Answer: enemy

There is no disputing the fact Haman was the enemy of the Jews. According to the Book of Esther, Haman devised a diabolical plan to have all the Jews killed in the vast area ruled by the king known as Xerxes in the NIV Bible and Ahasuerus in the KJV and NKJV. According to Esther 1:1, Xerxes/Ahasuerus ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush.

The book of Esther begins with the account of the king dumping Queen Vashti during the third year of his reign. It would put things in motion for Esther to become queen and play a pivotal role in preventing Haman from achieving his scheme to exterminate Jews.
5. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to fill in the missing word from Psalm 121:6 in the NKJV Bible: "The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the _____ by night."

Answer: moon

The correct word is 'moon'.

Psalm 121 is one of my favorites. I couldn't resist the temptation to run the Psalm in its entirety:

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills --
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is your keeper;
The LORD is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The LORD shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore."
6. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to fill in the missing word from Matthew 15:31 in the NKJV Bible: "So the multitude marveled when they saw the ____ speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel."

Answer: mute

The correct word is 'mute'. According to the 15th chapter of Matthew, Jesus healed a large number of people while seated on a mountain. Previously, He had been in the region of Tyre and Sidon.

Matthew 15:29-31, in the NKJV, states: "Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there. Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus' feet, and He healed them. So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel."
7. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to fill in the missing word from Isaiah 11:10 in the NKJV Bible: "And in that day there shall be a ____ of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious."

Answer: Root

Many Christians believe this is an Old Testament prophecy pertaining to Jesus Christ. Jesse was the father of King David, as per Ruth 4:17. Jesse is also included in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, as per Matthew 1:6 and Luke 3:32.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state, in part: "World mission was not a new idea with the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). 'Banner' is a rallying symbol. Jesus the Messiah is the banner for the gathering of people from all over the earth."
8. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to fill in the missing word from Revelation 3:20 in the NKJV Bible: "Behold, I stand at the ____ and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."

Answer: door

The correct answer is 'door'. Revelation 3:14-22, is addressed to the church at Laodicea, known as the 'Lukewarm Church'. Laodicea is one of seven churches mentioned in Revelation 1:11. The six other churches are Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis and Philadelphia, as per the NKJV. (In the NIV, Pergamos is called Pergamum.)

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state: "'I stand at the door and knock' pictures the Lord Jesus Christ seeking entrance into His own church for the purpose of renewed fellowship. Though it is often understood as Christ knocking at the door of an individual unbeliever's heart, the context makes that impossible."
9. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to fill in the missing word from 1 Corinthians 14:7 in the NIV Bible: "Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what ____ is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes?"

Answer: tune

The correct word is 'tune'. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, wrote 1 and 2 Corinthians, with both books addressed to believers in Corinth, a city in present-day Greece. The verse in question comes from a chapter in which Paul writes about the importance of interpreting messages spoken in tongues. The chapter concludes with an exhortation for order in church meetings.

The chapter comes on the heels of 1 Corinthians 13, known by many as the Love Chapter.
10. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to fill in the missing word from Deuteronomy 2:1 in the NIV Bible: "Then we turned back and set out toward the wilderness along the _____ to the Red Sea, as the LORD had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir."

Answer: route

The correct word is 'route'. The verse in question quotes Moses.

The first five books of the Hebrew Bible are known as the Torah and as the Pentateuch in the Old Testament of the English Bible. Deuteronomy is the last book in the Torah/Pentateuch.

The book largely explains the law of God revealed at Mount Sinai to a second generation of Israelites. Jews and Christians both traditionally credit Moses with writing the book but some scholars dispute this belief. Deuteronomy consists of 34 chapters and is seen by many as the last will of Moses.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about Deuteronomy: "With the nation of Israel poised at the entrance of Canaan, Moses seized one last opportunity to prepare the people for their new life in the land of their inheritance. Since Moses would not be entering the land with the people, he wanted to make sure that the nation did not forget its covenant with God. Moses' careful review of the laws of God is included in the Book of Deuteronomy."
