Unscramble the letters -- REVELATION Quiz

I enjoy quizzes in which players unscramble letters from a word to come up with the answer. So, I decided to compile one with a Biblical theme. It's based on the word Revelation, the final book in the New Testament. (The NIV & the NKJV were used.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to answer this question: According to the 14th chapter of Judges, what ferocious animal did Samson kill with his bare hands?

Answer: lion

The correct word is 'lion'. According to Scripture, the encounter with the lion happened while Samson was heading down a road with his parents to marry a young Philistine woman. Judges 14:5-6, in the NIV Bible tells what happened part way through their trip: "Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother.

As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat.

But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done."
2. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to answer this question: What was the name of the judge of Israel who, according to 1 Samuel 1:12-13, thought Hannah, the mother of Samuel, was drunk when she was praying fervently to the LORD?

Answer: Eli

Eli is the correct answer. He's known for a number of things, not the least of which is the fact he had two sons who are described as scoundrels in 1 Samuel 2:12 in the NIV. He's also known for falling backwards off a chair, breaking his neck and dying upon learning of the capture of the ark of God, as per 1 Samuel 4:18.

Meanwhile, 1 Samuel 1:12-13, tells of the interaction between Eli and Hannah in which he accused her of being drunk: "As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, 'How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.' 'Not so, my lord,' Hannah replied, 'I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.'"

The chapter concludes with Hannah's prayers being answered: She gave birth to a son who she named Samuel.
3. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to fill in the missing word from Psalm 48:2 in the NKJV: "Beautiful in __________, The joy of the whole earth, Is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, The city of the great King."

Answer: elevation

The correct word is 'elevation'. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Psalm 48 unites with Psalms 46 and 47 to form "three great psalms of praise to God for His kingship and for His love for the holy city of Jerusalem. This emphasis on Jerusalem has led many scholars to speak of these psalms as 'Songs of Zion'."

The three psalms are attributed to the sons of Korah. They descended from the priest who had led an abortive rebellion against the leadership of Moses and Aaron, according to notes in the NKJV Study Bible. (See the 16th chapter of Numbers.) Notes go on to state Korah's descendents continued for "hundreds of years to be some of the premier leaders of worship music in Israel."
4. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to fill in the blank from the missing word which appears twice in John 6:55 and quotes Jesus, as per the NIV Bible: "For my flesh is _____ food and my blood is ______ drink."

Answer: real

The missing word is 'real'. On the surface, the statement appears strange. However, to put things into context, earlier in the chapter Jesus had fed 5,000 men with five loaves of bread and two small fish. Then in verse 35, in the NIV Bible, Christ states "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

After making the statement "my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink" Jesus goes on to state in verse 56 "whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them."

In regards to 'eats my flesh and drinks my blood', notes in the NKJV Study Bible state: "Jesus had made it abundantly clear in this context that eternal life is gained by believing (John 6 29, 35, 40 and 47). These verses teach that the benefits of Jesus' death must be appropriated, by faith, by each individual."
5. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to fill in the blank from the missing word which appears in Jude 1:12, as per the NKJV Bible: "These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; ______ autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots."

Answer: late

The missing word is 'late'. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible offer this commentary about the words 'these are spots in your love feasts': "The people of God had been deceived by people who appeared to be messengers of God but instead were ministers of Satan."

While it is agreed the book was written by a man named Jude, no one knows for certain who he was. However, many theologians believe he was the half brother of Jesus. An introduction to the book in the NKJV Study Bible supports the view the writer was Christ's half brother. However, no one knows for certain.
6. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to answer the following question: In Genesis 24:65, in both the NIV and the NKJV, what did Rebekah cover herself with when she first saw her future husband Isaac?

Answer: veil

The first mention of a woman wearing a veil in Scripture is Rebekah. Genesis 24:64-65, in the NIV Bible, states: "Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, 'Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?' 'He is my master,' the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself."
7. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to fill in the missing word from Jeremiah 52:34 in the NKJV Bible that makes reference to Jehoiachin, a captured king of Judah: "And as for his provisions, there was a regular _______ given him by the king of Babylon, a portion for each day until the day of his death, all the days of his life."

Answer: ration

The correct word is 'ration'. According to Jeremiah 52:31-34, Jehoiachin had been imprisoned for 37 years when things took a dramatic turn for the better during the reign of the new Babylonian king Evil-Merodach.

Scripture states Evil-Merodach "spoke kindly" to Jehoiachin and gave him "a more prominent seat than those of the kings who were with him in Babylon." According to Jeremiah 52:33, Jehoiachin "changed from his prison garments, and he ate bread regularly before the king all the days of his life."
8. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to fill in the missing word from Genesis 2:9 in the NIV Bible: "The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground-trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and _____."

Answer: evil

The correct word is 'evil', of course. As documented in Genesis 2:16, Adam and Eve were told they were free to eat from any tree in the garden -- with the exception of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In the third chapter of Genesis, the serpent convinced Eve to eat from the tree and Adam did likewise. The rest, as they say, is history.
9. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to fill in the missing word from Matthew 11:27 in NKJV: "All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to ______ Him."

Answer: reveal

The missing word is 'reveal'. The verse, of course, quotes Jesus. After making this statement, Jesus proceeds to make another noteworthy pronouncement in Matthew 11:28-30. The verses state: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
10. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to fill in the missing word from Revelation 21:4 in the NKJV: "And God will wipe away every _____ from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

Answer: tear

The correct answer is 'tear', of course. The promise of no more death, sorrow or crying makes this verse a favorite with many people around the world. In a nutshell, the 21st chapter of Revelation is about all things being made new and about the New Jerusalem. Revelation, the final book in the New Testament, was written by John of Patmos.

The traditional belief is John of Patmos is the same John who was one of the original 12 Disciples. Some scholars, however, contest this view.
