Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Use some of the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in Romans 6:23, in the NIV Bible: "For the wages of ___ is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Answer: sin

The missing word is 'sin'. Romans 6:23 is a favorite verse with many evangelical Christians because they believe it largely sums up mankind's fate.

Romans appears just after Acts and is the first of 13 books Paul is credited with writing. Many theologians believe Paul wrote the book in 57 A.D., just a year before he was arrested in Jerusalem followed by imprisonment in Rome. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about the book: "Romans serves as the flagship of the fleet of Pauline letters within the New Testament. This letter has also loomed large in the history of Christianity. Countless men and women of faith have singled out Romans as the weapon God graciously used to bring about their surrender to Christ. Augustine, Martin Luther, John Wesley and others received unexpected spiritual volleys that pierced their defenses and ended their rebellion against God."
2. Take a few letters in PHILIPPIANS to answer this question: What was the name of the worker in the early church who converted the Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity? (Acts 8:26-40)

Answer: Philip

Philip was responsible for converting the Ethiopian eunuch, the first believer in Africa in a resurrected Jesus Christ. The conversion of the eunuch is found in Acts 8:26-40. Here's some trivia about the eunuch: Acts 8:27 describes him as an "important official" as he was in charge of the treasury for Candace, queen of the Ethiopians.

Philip is referred to as Philip the evangelist in Acts 21:8. When making reference to him, many people today call him Philip the evangelist to avoid any confusion with Philip, one of the original Twelve Disciples.
3. Unscramble the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in Matthew 27:1 in the NIV Bible: "Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their ____ how to have Jesus executed."

Answer: plans

The correct word is 'plans'. Verse 2 goes on to state they bound Jesus and led Him away to Pontius Pilate, the governor. The 27th chapter of Matthew is devoted to Christ's crucifixion while the 28th chapter tells of His resurrection.

Chapter 28 ends with Christ's Great Commission to the disciples. Matthew 28:18-20, in the NKJV, states: "And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.' Amen."
4. Unscramble the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in Proverbs 12:19 in the NIV Bible: "Truthful ____ endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment."

Answer: lips

'Lips' is the correct answer. People who speak carefully and truthfully are praised in many of the Proverbs. This verse is a classic example. The four preceding verses also tell of the importance of having control over one's tongue.

Verses 13-16, in the NIV Bible, state:
"Evildoers are trapped by their sinful talk,
and so the innocent escape trouble.
From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things,
and the work of their hands brings them reward.
The way of fools seems right to them,
but the wise listen to advice.
Fools show their annoyance at once,
but the prudent overlook an insult."
5. Unscramble the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in Isaiah 40:4 in the NIV Bible: "Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a ____."

Answer: plain

The missing word is 'plain'. The 40th chapter of Isaiah is seen as words of comfort for the Israelites who were in exile in Babylon at the time. The words of comfort are continued through to the 55th chapter.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about Isaiah 40-55: "This section is addressed to the Babylonian exiles in a prophetic manner. The book of comfort, written about 150 years before Cyrus, promised the exiles from Judah they would return to Jerusalem."

The notes go on to state Isaiah's prophecy tells of the "full salvation Jesus Christ would bring."
6. Take a few of the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in Revelation 18:17 in the NIV Bible: "In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin! Every sea captain, and all who travel by ____, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off."

Answer: ship

When you think about it, it couldn't have been any other word than 'ship' when one uses the letters in PHILIPPIANS. The 18th chapter of Revelation tells of the destruction of Babylon while the 19th chapter tells of the rising of the New Jerusalem.

Revelation was written by John of Patmos. The traditional belief is he was one of the Twelve Disciples who also wrote the Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John and 3 John. Some theologians, however, dispute this belief.
7. Unscramble the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in Isaiah 3:16 in the NIV Bible: "The LORD says, 'The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying ____, with ornaments jingling on their ankles'."

Answer: hips

'Hips' is the correct answer. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state: "The plural 'daughters of Zion' suggests the women of the city as well as the personification of Jerusalem."

Verse 17-23 go on to state the people will be dealt with severely: "Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald. In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, the earrings and bracelets and veils, the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, the signet rings and nose rings, the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls."
8. Unscramble the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in 1 Samuel 19:10 in the NKJV Bible: "Then Saul sought to ____ David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away from Saul's presence; and he drove the spear into the wall. So David fled and escaped that night."

Answer: pin

The missing word is 'pin'. The verse in question pertains to King Saul and his insatiable desire to kill David. This even though David had no animosity toward Saul, according to Scripture. Despite repeated attempts, Saul was unsuccessful in his bid to kill David. Saul would end up committing suicide after he was injured in a battle with the Philistines, as per 1 Samuel 31:4.
9. Use some of the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in 2 Chronicles 35:13 in the NIV Bible: "They roasted the Passover animals over the fire as prescribed, and boiled the holy offerings in pots, caldrons and ____ and served them quickly to all the people."

Answer: pans

The missing word is 'pans'. The first half of the 35th chapter of 2 Chronicles tells of Josiah keeping the Passover. The last half of the chapter tells of his death. His death happened in battle against Necho king of Egypt. Scripture tells of him being shot by an archer with his chariot taken away from the battlefield where he died.

Josiah was the son of Amon and was his successor to the throne as king of Judah. According to Scripture, his death was a dark day for the Israelites. 2 Chronicles 35:25, in the NIV Bible, states: "Jeremiah composed laments for Josiah, and to this day all the male and female singers commemorate Josiah in the laments. These became a tradition in Israel and are written in the laments."
10. Take a few of the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word that appears three times in Philippians 3:7-11, as per the NKJV Bible: "But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of ___ resurrection, and the fellowship of ___ sufferings, being conformed to ___ death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead."

Answer: His

The missing word is 'His'. Philippians was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. The book was addressed to believers at Philippi, a community in present-day Greece. Incidentally, some of the people who belonged to the early church at Philippi were Lydia, the first convert to Christianity in Europe, and the Philippi jailer. Their conversion is recorded in Acts 16:11-40.

Two of the major themes in Philippians are joy and being content in whatever the circumstance. In his letter to the believers at Philippi, Paul praises them for being generous givers (Philippians 4:14-16).
