Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to answer this question: What Old Testament character is synonymous with patience and long suffering?

Answer: Job

Job's world was turned upside down and inside out when a series of severe calamities beset him, as documented in the book of Job. Scripture tells of Job being visited by his friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar and Elihu. And while the friends had intended to comfort Job, it appears they only succeeded in making things worse with their pointing of fingers. Job, however, refused to point fingers at God for his predicament.

The book ends with Job's fortunes changing dramatically for the better. Job 42:12, in the NIV, states: "The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the former part.

He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. And he also had seven sons and three daughters."
2. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to answer this question: What Old Testament character built what must've been the largest boat the world had seen at that time?

Answer: Noah

Noah, of course, is the correct answer. The account of Noah and the Ark is one of the best known stories in the Old Testament. Noah and his unanmed wife were the parents of Shem, Ham and Japheth, as per Genesis 5:32. According to Scripture, Noah and his wife as well as their three sons and their wives were taken aboard the ark and survived a massive flood that covered the world.

The account of the flood is found in the seventh and eighth chapters of Genesis.
3. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to answer this question: What Old Testament character is synonymous with preaching in Nineveh?

Answer: Jonah

The correct answer is Jonah, the man who was swallowed by a huge fish or whale only to be regurgitated onto dry land after surviving three days and three nights in its stomach, according to Scripture. After surviving his ordeal in the whale's (or fish's) stomach, Jonah agreed to go to Nineveh, the place the LORD wanted him to go all along. According to the book of Jonah, the LORD told him to go to Nineveh and "preach against it" because of its wickedness.

His story is one of the best known in the Old Testament. Wikipedia states Nineveh "was an ancient city on the eastern bank of the Tigris River in ancient Assyria.

Its ruins are across the river from the modern-day major city of Mosul, in the Ninawa Governorate of Iraq."
4. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to answer this question: Who was the commander of David's army who fulfilled a request to have Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba, killed in battle?

Answer: Joab

Joab is the one who did the dirty work at the behest of King David. Uriah was the first husband of Bathsheba, David's most famous wife. After David learned Bathsheba was pregnant through an adulterous affair he had with her, he ended up conspiring to have Uriah murdered. The adultery took place while Uriah, a soldier, was in battle. After plotting and scheming, David eventually ordered Uriah to be placed in the front line where the fighting was fiercest and then had all the men withdraw, as per 2 Samuel 11:15. True to plan, Uriah was killed.

2 Samuel 11:14-17, in the NIV Bible, states: "In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. In it he wrote, 'Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die'. So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David's army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died."
5. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to answer this question: Who was the king of Canaan who was defeated by the Israelites after he had suppressed them for 20 years. (Hint: The Israelites were led to victory by Barak and Deborah.)

Answer: Jabin

After suppressing the Israelites for 20 years, Jabin was defeated. According to Scripture, the Israelites were led to victory by Barak and Deborah. The account of the Israelite victory is found in the fourth chapter of Judges. According to Christiananswers.net, this was the first great victory Israel had gained since the days of Joshua.

The chapter also tells of the highly-unusual death of Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army. Scripture states he fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite. Sisera was vanquished and he quickly accepted Jael's offer of hospitality to take refuge in her tent. However, it would prove to be a deadly mistake.

Judges 4:18-21, tells what happened: "Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, 'Come, my lord, come right in. Don't be afraid.' So he entered her tent, and she covered him with a blanket. 'I'm thirsty,' he said. 'Please give me some water.' She opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him up. 'Stand in the doorway of the tent,' he told her. 'If someone comes by and asks you, 'Is anyone in there?' say 'No.' But Jael, Heber's wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died."
6. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to fill in the missing word from Psalm 103:12 in the NKJV Bible: "As far as the ____ is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."

Answer: east

Psalm 103 is one of my favorites. Here's how it reads in the NKJV in its entirety:

"Bless the LORD, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
The LORD executes righteousness
And justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the children of Israel.
The LORD is merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor punished us according to our iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
As a father pities his children,
So the LORD pities those who fear Him.
For He knows our frame;
He remembers that we are dust.
As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
For the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
And its place remembers it no more.
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting
On those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children's children,
To such as keep His covenant,
And to those who remember His commandments to do them.
The LORD has established His throne in heaven,
And His kingdom rules over all.
Bless the LORD, you His angels,
Who excel in strength, who do His word,
Heeding the voice of His word.
Bless the LORD, all you His hosts,
You ministers of His, who do His pleasure.
Bless the LORD, all His works,
In all places of His dominion.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
7. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to fill in the missing word from 1 Corinthians 16:15-16 in the NIV Bible: "You know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the Lord's people. I urge you, brothers and sisters, to submit to such people and to everyone who ____ in the work and labors at it."

Answer: joins

The correct word is 'joins'. 1 Corinthians was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, the household of Stephanas was among the first in Achaia to respond to Paul's preaching about a resurrected Jesus Christ.

The book of Corinthians was addressed to members of the early church in the Greek city of Corinth. Achaia was a province of the Roman empire in Greece.
8. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to fill in the missing word from Revelation 7:16 in the NIV Bible: "Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,' nor any scorching _____."

Answer: heat

The missing word is 'heat'. Revelation was written by John of Patmos. Christian tradition holds that he is the same person who wrote the Gospel of John as well as 1 John, 2 John and 3 John.

The seventh chapter of Revelation, according to sub-heads in the NKJV Study Bible, is largely about 'The Sealed of Israel' and 'A Multitude from the Great Tribulation'.
9. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to fill in the missing word from John 8:7 the NKJV, Scripture reporting about Jesus and the woman caught in adultery: "So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, 'He who is without sin among you, let him throw a ______ at her first.'"

Answer: stone

The missing word is 'stone'. The account of Jesus, the Pharisees and the woman caught in adultery is found at John 8:1-11 and is one of the better known stories in the New Testament.

According to Scripture, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought a woman before Jesus who they claimed had been caught in adultery. They kept demanding Jesus to take action against the woman, but He turned the tables on them with His famous statement: "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first."

According to Scripture, the accusers left one at a time after Christ made His statement with the older ones leaving first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman. Apparently, the older ones left first because they could all recall secret sins from their past. Notes in the NIV Study Bible states this about the older men: "They were the first to realize what was involved. But all the men were conscience stricken or afraid, and in the end only Jesus and the woman remained."

What's truly missing in this story are details about the man who was involved in adultery with the woman. Verse 3 states she was "caught in adultery" so her accusers obviously knew the identify of the second adulterer. For whatever reason, he was not hauled before Jesus to be humiliated with the poor woman.
10. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to fill in the missing word from Matthew 3:1-3 in the NKJV: "In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!' For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His ______ straight'."

Answer: paths

The correct word is 'paths'. Matthew 3:4 and Mark 1:6 provide these highly unusual details about John the Baptist, regarded by some as the last of the Old Testament prophets: He was clothed with camel hair, wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. John's purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus, whom he described as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:29) In addition to his unusual dress, John never seemed to be at a loss for words when it came to the Pharisees and the Sadducees. In Matthew 3:7, for example, he called them a "brood of vipers."

John the Baptist met his end, however, when he ran afoul of Herodias.

Herodias was not only conniving, but extremely vindictive. When she left her first husband (Herod Phillip I) and married his half brother Herod Antipas, John the Baptist was disgusted and denounced the union, according to the 14th chapter of Matthew. As a result, Herod ordered the arrest of John the Baptist and from this point on, his fate was sealed as Herodias had him in her clutches.

Matthew 14:6-12 reports Herod hosted a lavish birthday party for himself and when Herodias' daughter danced at the reception, Herod was so pleased he told the girl he would give her whatever she asked for. Verse 9, in the NIV Bible, states: "Prompted by her mother, she said, 'Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist'."

Verse 11 goes on to tell of this macabre scene: "His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother."
