Scrambles Trivia Questions

1. Who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob? Remember that the answer can only use letters found in "old", "new", and "testament".

From Quiz
Old and New Testament

Answer: Dan

Rachel wanted a family so she had her maidservant, Bilhah, sleep with Jacob. As a result, Dan was born. Naphtali was the brother to Dan, while all others sons of Jacob had a different mother (either Leah, her maidservant Zilpah, or Rachel). Dan was among the sons that sold Joseph into slavery. It was later mentioned (in Genesis 46:23) that Dan had a son named Hushim. Dan was first mentioned in Genesis 30:6 which told about his birth.

2. Use only a selection of the letters in THE TEN LEPERS to answer this question: What was the name of the third son of Adam and Eve?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- THE TEN LEPERS

Answer: Seth

Seth was the third son of Adam and Eve, according to Genesis 4:25. The first two sons were Cain and Abel. Adam and Eve had more children after Cain, Abel and Seth but no names are mentioned. Genesis 5:4 in the NIV Bible simply states: "After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters."

3. Unscramble the letters in DAVID & BATHSHEBA to answer this question: Who was the wicked king of Israel who was married to Jezebel? (1 Kings 16:28)

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- DAVID & BATHSHEBA

Answer: Ahab

Ahab is the correct answer. He was the son of Omri and the seventh king of Israel. His wife Jezebel is generally regarded as the most wicked woman in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible. As a result of her encouragement, Ahab became a vehement opponent of the prophets of God, most notably Elijah. Ahab's story is told in the 16th to 22nd chapters of 1 Kings.

4. Unscramble the letters in DOUBTING THOMAS to answer this question: What was Bathsheba doing when she was first spotted by King David, according to 2 Samuel 1:2?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- DOUBTING THOMAS

Answer: bathing

Yes, Bathsheba was bathing when David first spotted her. 2 Samuel 11:2-4, in the NIV, tells of the occasion: "One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, 'She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.' Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her." Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state "in ancient times, Israelite houses had an enclosed courtyard. Bathsheba was actually in her house." Obviously, her house was relatively close to David's palace and he observed her from a higher vantage point. Before long, Bathsheba and David would find themselves in real hot water when she became pregnant as a result of their liaison.

5. Unscramble the letters in JUDAS ISCARIOT to answer this question: What was the name of the man who had his young daughter raised from the dead by Jesus, as per Luke 8:40-53?

From Quiz Unscramble the Letters -- JUDAS ISCARIOT

Answer: Jairus

Jairus was the father of the girl who was raised from the dead by Jesus, according to Mark 5:21-43 and Luke 8:40-56. Scripture states he was a synagogue ruler. The account of his daughter being raised from the dead is one of most popular in the New Testament. In the accounts in Mark and Luke, it tells of people weeping for the dead girl outside her home. When Jesus appeared and stated the girl was not dead but was simply sleeping, the 'mourners' laughed at him. A few moments later, however, their laughter turned to total amazement when Christ raised the girl from the dead. According to Mark 5:41, Jesus said, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" And she did just that! It's interesting to note that Jesus used almost the same words as when he raised the widow's son from the dead at Nain. In Luke 7:14 in the NIV Bible, Jesus said eight words to the widow's dead son: "Young man, I say to you, get up!"

6. Use some of the letters in MARY MAGDALENE to answer this question: According to Scripture, who was the first man?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- MARY MAGDALENE

Answer: Adam

Adam, of course, is the correct answer. The creation of Adam and his partner Eve is told in the first and second chapters of Genesis. According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Adam in Hebrew means man. God also created a woman and Adam gave her the name Eve, which translates as "the mother of all living", as per Genesis 3:20.

7. Unscramble the letters in COLOSSIANS to answer this question: What was the name of the first child Eve gave birth to, as per Genesis 4:1?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- COLOSSIANS

Answer: Cain

Cain is the correct answer. Abel was born second and was followed by Seth. Genesis 4:1, in the NIV Bible, states: "Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, 'With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man'." Cain, of course, would go on to earn the distinction of being the world's first murderer when he killed Abel, as per the fourth chapter of Genesis.

8. Use some of the letters in DEUTERONOMY to answer this question: How many of the ten lepers healed by Jesus returned to give thanks? (Luke 17:11-19)

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- DEUTERONOMY

Answer: one & 1

Only one of the ten lepers, a Samaritan, returned to Jesus to give thanks after being healed, according to Scripture. The other nine did not return. The ten lepers begged Jesus to heal them after He encountered them outside an unnamed village, along the border of Galilee and Samaria. Jesus responded by requesting the lepers to "go, show yourselves to the priests." As they proceeded on their way to show themselves to the priests, a miracle happened as Scripture reports they were suddenly healed of their leprosy. According to notes in the NIV Study Bible, showing oneself to the priests was a normal procedure after a cure. (Further information about showing oneself to the priests can be found in Leviticus 13:2-3 and 14:2-32.) However, one of the healed lepers opted to return to give thanks to Jesus after he noticed he was healed, as per Luke 17:15. According to verse 16, the man was a Samaritan. This is noteworthy because Jews and Samaritans largely despised each other in Biblical times. However, it would not be uncommon to see Jewish and Samaritan lepers living together, especially along the border between Galilee and Samaria. The lepers were despised by everyone, it seems, and it made sense for them to live together. Although there was a major rift between the Jews and Samaritans in Biblical times, the four Gospels continually speak about Jesus looking favorably on the Samaritans. Some examples that leap to mind are the Samaritan woman at the well and the Parable of the Good Samaritan.

9. Use some of the letters in PHILIPPIANS to fill in the missing word in Romans 6:23, in the NIV Bible: "For the wages of ___ is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- PHILIPPIANS

Answer: sin

The missing word is 'sin'. Romans 6:23 is a favorite verse with many evangelical Christians because they believe it largely sums up mankind's fate. Romans appears just after Acts and is the first of 13 books Paul is credited with writing. Many theologians believe Paul wrote the book in 57 A.D., just a year before he was arrested in Jerusalem followed by imprisonment in Rome. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about the book: "Romans serves as the flagship of the fleet of Pauline letters within the New Testament. This letter has also loomed large in the history of Christianity. Countless men and women of faith have singled out Romans as the weapon God graciously used to bring about their surrender to Christ. Augustine, Martin Luther, John Wesley and others received unexpected spiritual volleys that pierced their defenses and ended their rebellion against God."

10. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to answer this question: What Old Testament character is synonymous with patience and long suffering?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- JOHN THE BAPTIST

Answer: Job

Job's world was turned upside down and inside out when a series of severe calamities beset him, as documented in the book of Job. Scripture tells of Job being visited by his friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar and Elihu. And while the friends had intended to comfort Job, it appears they only succeeded in making things worse with their pointing of fingers. Job, however, refused to point fingers at God for his predicament. The book ends with Job's fortunes changing dramatically for the better. Job 42:12, in the NIV, states: "The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. And he also had seven sons and three daughters."

11. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to answer this question: According to the 14th chapter of Judges, what ferocious animal did Samson kill with his bare hands?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- REVELATION

Answer: lion

The correct word is 'lion'. According to Scripture, the encounter with the lion happened while Samson was heading down a road with his parents to marry a young Philistine woman. Judges 14:5-6, in the NIV Bible tells what happened part way through their trip: "Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done."

12. How many books of the NIV version of the Bible were named after women? Only use letters that are found in the words "old", "new", and "testament".

From Quiz Old and New Testament

Answer: two

Two books of the Bible, Ruth and Esther, were named after a woman. Both are found in the Old Testament. Ruth told the story of Ruth's journey with her mother-in-law Naomi to Bethlehem and her marriage to Boaz. Esther told the story of how she helped save her people (Jews) from Haman.

13. Use only a selection of the letters in THE TEN LEPERS to answer this question: What was the name of the woman who was originally known as Hadassah and rose to become the queen of Persia?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- THE TEN LEPERS

Answer: Esther

Esther is the correct answer. Her Jewish name was Hadassah and after her parents died she was raised by her cousin Mordecai, according to Esther 2:7. Esther and Mordecai would join forces to prevent Haman from carrying out a diabolical plan to exterminate all the Jews in the vast area ruled by the man known as Xerxes in the NIV Bible and Ahasuerus in the KJV. According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Hadassah means 'myrtle' or 'bride'.

14. Unscramble the letters in DAVID & BATHSHEBA to answer this question: Who is the second woman mentioned by name in the Bible after Eve? (Spelling is per the KJV, NKJV and NIV. Genesis 4:19.)

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- DAVID & BATHSHEBA

Answer: Adah

Adah is the two correct name of the second woman who is identified after Eve. According to Genesis 4:19-20, Adah was married to Lamech and she gave birth to Jabal who "was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock." The same verses state Lamech had a second wife named Zillah.

15. Unscramble the letters in DOUBTING THOMAS to answer this question: What's the name of the book in the New Testament of the King James Bible that appears after 2 Timothy and before Philemon?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- DOUBTING THOMAS

Answer: Titus

The correct answer is Titus. The book was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Titus means honorable. He was a worker in the early church on the island of Crete, as per Titus 1:5. He is also mentioned by Paul in 2 Timothy 4:10. In the passage, Paul states Titus had gone to Dalmatia, part of present-day Croatia. Notes in the New King James Version Study Bible have this to say about the book of Titus: "Whereas the letters to Timothy emphasize sound doctrine, the letter to Titus emphasizes good works (1:16; 2:7, 14; 3:1, 5, 8, 14). There were influential people in the church who were motivated by personal interest and selfish gain (1:11). In his letter, Paul exposes the ways this was affecting the doctrine (1:11) and practice (1:16) of the church and urges Titus to champion purity, service and kindness toward others (2:11-15; 3:7). Paul reminds Titus that salvation is not based on our 'works and righteousness' (3:5) but rather is the result of God's work of kindness and love toward us (3:4)."

16. Unscramble the letters in JUDAS ISCARIOT to answer this question: Who was the judge of Israel who had thirty sons and ruled for twenty-two years? (Judges 10)

From Quiz Unscramble the Letters -- JUDAS ISCARIOT

Answer: Jair

Jair is the correct answer. According to the 10th chapter of Judges, Jair replaced Tola and led Israel for 22 years. The fourth verse states he had 30 sons who rode 30 donkeys and they controlled 30 towns in Gilead. When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon, as per Judges 10:5. Jair is also the name of three other men in the Old Testament.

17. Unscramble the letters in MARY MAGDALENE to answer this question: According to Scripture, who was the son of Jacob and Leah's servant Zilpah and a founder of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- MARY MAGDALENE

Answer: Gad

Gad was one of the founders of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. In addition to being the seventh son of Jacob, Gad was the full brother of Asher. Leah was the first wife of Jacob and according to the 30th chapter of Genesis, after she was no longer able to give birth to children she granted permission to Jacob to sleep with her servant Zilpah. The same chapter reports Rachel, the second wife of Jacob, granted permission to Jacob to sleep with her servant, Bilhah.

18. Unscramble the letters in THESSALONIANS to fill in the missing word from 2 Corinthians 11:24, in the NIV Bible: "Five times I received from the Jews the forty _____ minus one."

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- THESSALONIANS

Answer: lashes

The passage was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, and the missing word is 'lashes'. In other words, Paul is stating he was whipped on five different occasions, receiving 39 lashes each time, for a total of 195 lashes! In verse 25-29, Paul tells more about his horrible sufferings: "Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches."

19. Unscramble the letters in ECCLESIASTES to fill in the missing word that appears in Proverbs 18:19 in NKJV Bible: "A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a _____."

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- ECCLESIASTES

Answer: castle

The correct word is 'castle'. Perhaps the NIV rendition of the verse will make the verse a bit easier to understand: "A brother wronged is more unyielding than a fortified city; disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel." Incidentally, the word 'castle' appears only in this verse in the NKJV and the word does not appear in the NIV. However, the word 'castle' and its plural form 'castles' appear fifteen times in the KJV.

20. Unscramble the letters in COLOSSIANS to fill in the missing word from Job 5:6 *in the NIV Bible*: "For hardship does not spring from the _____, nor does trouble sprout from the ground."

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- COLOSSIANS

Answer: soil

The correct word is 'soil' (although the NKJV uses the word 'dust', that word cannot be formed from the given letters, and the question specifies the wording of the NIV). The speaker in this case is Eliphaz, one of Job's friends. Eliphaz, along with Bildad and Zophar, attempted to console Job after his world was turned upside down and inside out due to a series of calamities. A fourth friend, Elihu, appears in the 32nd chapter of Job. Their conversations with Job comprise a major portion of the book. And while the friends had intended to comfort Job, it appears they only succeeded in making things worse with their pointing of fingers. The following verse, Job 5:7, is a classic. In the NIV Bible, it states: "Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward."

21. Unscramble the letters in DEUTERONOMY to answer this question: According to Genesis 42:3, how many of Joseph's brothers went to Egypt on their first trip to buy grain?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- DEUTERONOMY

Answer: ten & 10

Ten of Joseph's brothers went to Egypt to obtain food. However, Benjamin, the youngest of Jacob's 12 sons, did not travel with the group. According to Genesis 42:4, Jacob refused to allow Benjamin to travel with his brothers "lest some calamity befall him." The ten sons who traveled to Egypt were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar and Zebulun.

22. Take a few letters in PHILIPPIANS to answer this question: What was the name of the worker in the early church who converted the Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity? (Acts 8:26-40)

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- PHILIPPIANS

Answer: Philip

Philip was responsible for converting the Ethiopian eunuch, the first believer in Africa in a resurrected Jesus Christ. The conversion of the eunuch is found in Acts 8:26-40. Here's some trivia about the eunuch: Acts 8:27 describes him as an "important official" as he was in charge of the treasury for Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. Philip is referred to as Philip the evangelist in Acts 21:8. When making reference to him, many people today call him Philip the evangelist to avoid any confusion with Philip, one of the original Twelve Disciples.

23. Use letters from JEREMIAH to answer this question: Noah had three sons with Shem being the oldest and Japheth the youngest. What was the name of the other son of Noah, as per Genesis 5:32?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- JEREMIAH

Answer: Ham

The middle son's name was Ham. According to the seventh chapter of Genesis, Noah and his wife, and their three sons and their wives, survived a massive flood that covered the world when they took refuge in a gigantic ark. Ham was the father of Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan, as per Genesis 10:6.

24. Unscramble the letters in JOHN THE BAPTIST to answer this question: What Old Testament character built what must've been the largest boat the world had seen at that time?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- JOHN THE BAPTIST

Answer: Noah

Noah, of course, is the correct answer. The account of Noah and the Ark is one of the best known stories in the Old Testament. Noah and his unanmed wife were the parents of Shem, Ham and Japheth, as per Genesis 5:32. According to Scripture, Noah and his wife as well as their three sons and their wives were taken aboard the ark and survived a massive flood that covered the world. The account of the flood is found in the seventh and eighth chapters of Genesis.

25. Unscramble the letters from LAMENTATIONS to answer this question: According to Genesis 2:7, what did God create from the dust of the ground?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- LAMENTATIONS

Answer: man

The correct answer is man. The man's name, of course was Adam and his wife's name was Eve. Genesis 2:7, in the NIV Bible, states: "Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."

26. Unscramble the letters in CORINTHIANS to answer this question: According to Genesis 4:7, what was Cain told was "crouching at his door?"

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- CORINTHIANS

Answer: sin

'Sin' is the correct answer. Genesis 4:6-7 in the NIV Bible states: "Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." Later in the chapter readers are told about Cain murdering his brother Abel out of jealousy.

27. Unscramble the letters from REVELATION to answer this question: What was the name of the judge of Israel who, according to 1 Samuel 1:12-13, thought Hannah, the mother of Samuel, was drunk when she was praying fervently to the LORD?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- REVELATION

Answer: Eli

Eli is the correct answer. He's known for a number of things, not the least of which is the fact he had two sons who are described as scoundrels in 1 Samuel 2:12 in the NIV. He's also known for falling backwards off a chair, breaking his neck and dying upon learning of the capture of the ark of God, as per 1 Samuel 4:18. Meanwhile, 1 Samuel 1:12-13, tells of the interaction between Eli and Hannah in which he accused her of being drunk: "As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, 'How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.' 'Not so, my lord,' Hannah replied, 'I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.'" The chapter concludes with Hannah's prayers being answered: She gave birth to a son who she named Samuel.

28. Use only a selection of the letters in THE TEN LEPERS to answer this question: What was the name of one of the Twelve Disciples who was the brother of Andrew?

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- THE TEN LEPERS

Peter is the correct answer. According to John 1:40-44, Peter and Andrew were brothers and they both came from Bethsaida, a fishing community on the Sea of Galilee. According to the same passage, the disciple Philip also came from Bethsaida.

29. Unscramble the letters in DAVID & BATHSHEBA to answer this question: Who was the king of Judah who, according to the 15th chapter of 1 Kings, "expelled the male shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made?"

From Quiz Unscramble the letters -- DAVID & BATHSHEBA

Answer: Asa

Asa is the correct answer. According to 1 Kings 15:13, Asa took a tough stand against his grandmother. The passage, in the NIV Bible, states: "He even deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down and burned it in the Kidron Valley." According to Scripture, he reigned 41 years over Judah. And some more trivia about Asa. Answer: Asa

The third king of Judah was Asa, who was the son of Abijah and grandson of Rehoboam. According to 1 Kings 15:11, Asa did "what was right in the eyes of the LORD." Scripture states he reigned 41 years in Jerusalem. According to 2 Chronicles 16:12, Asa became diseased in his feet during the 39th year of his reign.
