Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is traditionally credited with being the author of 'The Book of Revelation'?

Answer: John the Apostle

John the Apostle is generally credited with being the author of the work, which is also known by various titles: 'The Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ', 'The Book of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine', also the 'Apocalypse of John'.

It is the last book in the New Testament.
2. Jesus addressed letters to churches and synagogues in various cities in Revelation 2 and 3. Which of the following was one of them?

Answer: Philadelphia

In the area which is now modern Turkey (it used to be Asia Minor), there was an ancient city with the name of 'Philadelphia', not to be confused with the city of the same name in Pennsylvania.

The name Philadelphia comes from the Greek words 'phileo' (love) and 'adelphos' (brother) so the meaning is given as 'brotherly love'.
3. Which animal is it that is able to open 'The Sacred Scroll' in Revelation 5?

Answer: A wounded lamb

The scroll opener is introduced, by an elder, as 'the Lion of Judah' who is depicted as a 'lamb which looked as if it had been slain' (Revelation 5:6).
'The sacred scroll' had seven seals upon it, the breaking of each of which set in motion irreversible, earth-shattering events, associated with the apocalypse and the cleansing of the world.
4. Which of these sevenfold items does NOT trigger a plague, or some kind of destruction, in Revelation?

Answer: The swimming of seven swans

The swans are from the song 'The Twelve Days of Christmas', namely 'seven swans a swimming'.

The seven seals secure the apocalyptic scroll (Revelation: Chapters 5-8) and the breaking or opening of each seal, heralds another Judgement, or apocalyptic event.

The sounding of seven trumpets happens when the Lamb opens the seventh seal and this, in turn, leads to the apocalyptic event of the pouring out of seven bowls. (Revelation 8:1-6)
5. Which of these creatures is NOT an embodiment of evil in Revelation?

Answer: A six winged ox covered with eyes

All but the six winged ox covered with eyes, is an evil being; the ox, however, is an embodiment of good (Revelation 4:6-7).

The woman named Babylon (Whore of Babylon) is associated with the Beast and the Antichrist and her downfall is linked with the 'beast with seven heads and ten horns' (Revelation Chapters 17-18).

The dragon is one of the evil creatures in Revelation. Described as being 'fiery red' with seven heads, it is one of the events leading up to the 'second woe' (these occur on the blowing of the sixth trumpet by Angels). 'A great, fiery red, seven-headed dragon drags a third of the stars of heaven with his tail, and throws them to the earth'. (Revelation 12:3-4)
6. In Revelation, where do the Kings and the demons gather for the final epic battle with the Army of the Lord?

Answer: Armageddon

The mention of the city of Armageddon is given in Revelation 16:16 which predicts that 'they (will gather) the kings together to .... Armageddon.' Revelation 16:14 suggests that 'the Kings will gather at a place named 'Armageddon' in order to do battle.

Historians suggest that the place comes from the ancient city of 'Megiddo' a place where fortifications were variously built to protect the main route between Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt.

'Apocalypse' is the numerous events leading up to the end of the world.
'Abbadon' is the name of an Angel in Revelations 9:11. 'And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.'

Of course 'Waterloo' was the place where Napoleon met his downfall.
7. Which of these hymns of praise is NOT found in Revelation?

Answer: The Lord is My Shepherd

'The Lord is My Shepherd' is the only hymn not found in Revelation as it is from the Old Testament, 'The Book of Psalms', Psalm 23.

'Worthy is the Lamb Who Was Slain' is from Revelation 5:12.
'Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God Almighty' is from Revelation 4:8-11.
'Hallelujah! Salvation and Glory and Power Belong to Our God' is from Revelation 19:1.
8. At both the beginning and end of Revelation, God is identified as which of these?

Answer: The Alpha and the Omega

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last letter.
Thus 'I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End' (Revelation 22:31).
9. According to tradition, where was 'Revelation' written?

Answer: The island of Patmos where John was living in exile as a criminal.

John identifies his location as Patmos (Revelations 1:9). However, exile is not exactly mentioned in Revelation. The belief that John was on Patmos as a punishment is a later assumption, based on church tradition.
Of course, I don't recall John being one of those stranded on 'Gilligan's Island!
10. Which of the following is not found in God's Holy City of New Jerusalem?

Answer: The Temple of the Lord

In Revelations 21:22, John explains the absence of the Temple of the Lord with:
'I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its Temple.'
