Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many individuals have been credited with contributing to modern Satanism, but which of these individuals dates back the farthest?

Answer: Stanislaw Przybyszewski

In "The Devil's Party: Satanism in Modernity", edited by Per Faxneld and Jesper Aa. Petersen, there is a fascinating chapter on Stanislaw Przybyszewski. His most Satanic work, according to the text, was "The Synagogue of Satan" written in 1897.
2. In the Ceremony of the Nine Angles, within "The Satanic Rituals", one of the deities is referred to as the Faceless One. However, the Faceless God is generally thought to be Nyarlathotep in Lovecraftian myth. Which deity does the Ceremony use instead?

Answer: Yog-Sothoth

Many people do not know that the chapters on Lovecraft in "The Satanic Rituals" were actually ghost-written by Dr. Michael A. Aquino. The Church of Satan may have disowned Dr. Aquino by now, but he and Anton LaVey were very close at one time.
3. According to Dr. Aquino, which text did LaVey love so much he kept in a locked case?

Answer: The King in Yellow

Dr. Aquino has an extensive, two volume book on his time with the Church of Satan and Anton LaVey, filled with many interesting facts such as this. LaVey seems to have been a fan of Weird Fiction. "The King in Yellow" is a group of overlapping stories about a forbidden play, "The King in Yellow", which the main characters in each story read. Upon reading it, they come into contact with the strange forces common to weird fiction.
4. In "The Book of the Law" Crowley references a need to study the "obeah and wanga," which is a reference to vodoo traditions, but never addresses it much further. Which modern occult tradition on this list specifically attempted to fill that gap in knowledge?

Answer: The Typhonian Tradition

Kenneth Grant, and indeed many of his followers, believed him to be the rightful successor to Aleister Crowley after the latter's death, though Grant was never officially recognized. Grant wrote many books in the course of his lifetime, and is still widely discussed today.

The Typhonian Tradition is named after the Greek Titan Typhon, who comes from the Egyptian God Set. They believed that there was a dark side to the hermeticism of Crowleyian groups which should be embraced, whereas the groups of the time denied this dark side. Kenneth Grant launched a deep study into tantric traditions, voodoo, and African tribalism.
5. Which tradition has a central, important chant known as the "Agios Baphomet"?

Answer: The Sinister Tradition

The "Agios Baphomet", and many other chants from the Order of Nine Angles, have been provided by the ONA free on YouTube. The Order of Nine Angles is part of what's known as "The Sinister Tradition", which more closely matches the darker side of satanism generally imagined by the public.

The ONA has generally been considered a fascist group by academics, engaging and promoting criminal activity including human sacrifice, and having ties to Islamic extremism. Of course, there is great debate as to whether the ONA is a real organization at all, or a hoax that has inspired scattered individuals.
6. In "Mindstar" Dr. Michael A. Aquino proposes a radical and original view on consciousness, and what exactly it is. What does he propose?

Answer: Consciousness is the "field" created by the interaction between the physical body and individual, Platonic Form

Dr. Aquino discusses this idea in depth within "Mindstar", following in the footsteps of Dr. Harold Saxton Burr, who discovered the existence of what he called "Life-Fields". Dr. Burr did some fascinating work, and any interested esotericists, engineers, and scientists should consider looking into his experiments.
7. "The Black Flame" is a common concept in the Left Hand Path, and Michael W. Ford references it in his Luciferian "The Bible of the Adversary". Ford provides a sigil for the Black Flame - what is the name of this sigil?

Answer: The Sigil of Spirit

Ford describes this as a central aspect of the Luciferian archetype, deeply tied to one's True Will. The Sigil of Spirit is actually a sigil within the full Sigil of Lucifer.
8. In "The Dark Lord", Peter Levenda discusses an aspect of Kenneth Grant's mythology that, according to Mr. Levenda, has rarely been touched on elsewhere. An entire chapter is dedicated to this topic, one Grant had mentioned but never fleshed out. What is this topic?

Answer: Kalas

Kalas are an aspect of tantric traditions, "essences" which some have believed are released by females during sex, and used for ritualistic purposes. All of these things, and much much more, are discussed in Levenda's book. However, the Tunnels of Set and such were covered in great depth by Kenneth Grant within his life. "The Dark Lord" is a source of much rare knowledge, such as the underestimated importance of the Golden Dawn on Thelema, and the interest occultism has with H.P. Lovecraft.
9. How many chapters are there in the version of the "Al-Jilwah", a recorded book that is supposed to describe Yezidi oral tradition, which is found within "The Satanic Rituals"?

Answer: Five

The Yezidi are now more widely recognized because of their slaughter by the Islamic State, but for a long time they were simply considered an ancient Devil worshiping cult. LaVey loved this image of the Yezidi, which is how they are portrayed in his works. The authenticity of any Yezidi text is questionable, as they have a strictly oral tradition to our knowledge.
10. The Order of Nine Angles claims what history?

Answer: The ONA is a combination of three ancient, sinister traditions which came together in England in modern times.

The Order of Nine Angles is one of the most controversial Left Hand Path groups, advocating violence, terror, and fascism. This does not mean that they are not a unique or deep ideology, simply that most approach the work with caution.
