Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team did the Yankees beat in the ALDS to advance to the ALCS?

Answer: Minnesota Twins

The Yankees swept the Twins 3-0 in the ALDS, taking the first two in Minnesota and winnig Game 3 in New York. This was their first postseason series win as a wild card team (lost in 1995, 1997, and 2005).
2. The Rangers beat the Red Sox to advance.

Answer: False

The Rangers beat the Rays three games to two, not the Red Sox. Both teams are in the same division. All five games were won by the road team.
3. Which of the following pitchers won two games for their respective team?

Answer: Colby Lewis

Pettitte and Lee faced off in Game 3, and would have in Game 7, except that the Rangers took the series in six. Lee earned the win with 8 innings pitched and no earned runs, while Pettitte only gave up two runs on a Josh Hamilton home run in the first inning of Game 3.

Hughes and Lewis faced off in both Games 2 and 6. In Game 2, Hughes went 4+ innings, giving up five runs. Lewis gave up two in 5-2/3, earning the win. Game 6 saw Lewis give up one run in eight innings, while Hughes only went 4 2/3 giving up four more runs. Hughes had gone 15-1/3 innings in the Rangers ballpark before and had not given up any runs.
4. Did either starter in Game 1 earn a decision?

Answer: No

When Sabathia was pulled after four, the Rangers were leading 5-0, setting him up for a loss. CJ Wilson was pulled after seven and two batters, giving up two runs, but did not earn a decision when the Yankees scored five times in the top of the 8th inning of Game 1. Alex Rodriguez scored the go-ahead run when Darren Oliver was on the mound (he took the L in this game). Sabathia had been long pulled when the Yankees came roaring back.

Both pitchers in Game 5 did earn a decision, with Sabathia earning the win, and CJ taking the loss.
5. Which team scored 10 or more runs in a game?

Answer: Rangers

The only time either team scored 10 was when the Rangers took Game 4, 10-3.
6. How many strikeouts did Cliff Lee have in Game 3?

Answer: 13

Lee had 10 in Game 2 of the ALDS against Tampa, then tied his personal record with 11 in Game 5 (both setting new Ranger postseason records). He then had 13 in his eight innings in Game 3, with Feliz adding two more, for a total of 15 strikeouts by Ranger pitchers for that game.
7. When New York won Game 1, what was their streak of wins against Texas in the postseason at that point?

Answer: 10

In 1996, the Rangers took Game 1 of their ALDS against New York. The Yankees proceeded to win the next three, taking that series 3-1. Again in 1998, the Rangers faced the Yankees in the ALDS, with the Yankees sweeping Texas, giving them a six game streak. The following year in 1999, the Yankees yet again swept Texas, sending their streak to nine. Winning Game 1 upped it to 10, then the Yankees lost three in a row to Texas.

Four games is what it takes to win the LCS, and seven games is the most played in the LCS.
8. Which game did the Yankees win at Yankee Stadium?

Answer: Game 5

They won Game 5 by the score of 7-2 behind CC Sabathia's six innings. The Rangers took Game 3 by a score of 8-0, giving up three baserunners. That was the Yankees' worst loss in the postseason in their storied history. The Rangers then took Game 4, 10-3.
9. How many runs were the most scored in any half-inning?

Answer: 6

The Rangers scored six in the top of the ninth inning in Game 3 after Pettitte was pulled. The Yankees scored five in the top of the eighth in Game 1, when Ron Washington made several trips to the mound and the Yankees took the lead, 6-5. The Rangers outscored the Yankees 38-19 in the series.
10. Who won the ALCS MVP Award?

Answer: Josh Hamilton

Josh Hamilton won the MVP Award and had four home runs in the series, as well as five intentional walks, an LCS record in 2010. Robinson Cano also had four home runs against Texas pitching.
