Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2001, the Arizona Diamondbacks won their first-ever World Series over the Yankees after becoming a franchise only four seasons earlier. Tied at three games each, it all came down to the bottom of the ninth inning in game seven for the Diamondbacks. They were down 2-1, scored two runs, and won it all. Who provided the game-winning RBI for Arizona?

Answer: Luis Gonzalez

The others were all retired before 2001, and none ever played for the Diamondbacks or Yankees. Tony Womak doubled in the inning which scored Midre Cummings for the first run. Gonzalez singled which scored Jay Bell and the Diamondbacks defeated the Yankees. Both Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling were the series MVP for their arm strength for Arizona, although Johnson went 3-0 and Schilling 1-0. Yankee Alfonso Soriano was almost the series hero when he hit an eighth inning home run to put the Yankees ahead 2-1.
2. The first walk-off home run to ever win a World Series title occurred in 1960, and it defeated the New York Yankees. Who hit this historical shot?

Answer: Bill Mazeroski

The others were all Yankees, and it was the New York team who was on the losing end of this game seven, bottom of the ninth inning home run. The Yankees were down 9-7 going into the top of ninth inning, and with two RBIs provided by Mantle and Berra, they were all tied up going into the bottom of the ninth.

In a strange series, the Yankees outscored the Pirates 55-27, but the Pirates managed to make it all count in the end, and Mazeroski's walk-off home run did it. Yankee Bobby Richardson was the series MVP.
3. In 1991, the Minnesota Twins went at it in the World Series against the Atlanta Braves. It came down to game seven that went into extra innings also. The Twins won on a single that scored Dan Gladden after two intentional walks. Whose single was it?

Answer: Gene Larkin

The others had all died before 1991. Braves pitcher Mike Stanton took over for John Smoltz in the eighth, then Alejandro Pena replaced Mike Stanton in the ninth. After a double by Gladden in the bottom of the 10th, it was Pena who walked both Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek intentionally. Pena then gave up the game-winning single to Larkin.

The Twins won the game 1-0 on 10 hits, and their second World Series title since moving to Minnesota in 1961.
4. 1964 witnessed the Yankees and Cardinals go against each other in the World Series. With the series tied at three games each, it came down to the ninth inning of game seven. With the Yankees behind 7-3 going into the ninth, they mustered two runs before which Cardinal pitcher, who went the distance, stayed focused enough to stop their charge, and win it all for St. Louis?

Answer: Bob Gibson

The others never played with the Cardinals. Gibson went the distance while the Yankees used five pitchers with Mel Stottlemyre starting the game. Gibson gave up home runs to Clete Boyer and Phil Linz in the ninth inning before settling down and scaring the heck out of manager Johnny Keane.

The Cardinals won the game 7-5 along with the series. Bob Gibson was the series MVP. It was the Yankees second consecutive World Series loss, losing to the Dodgers in 1963.
5. The first World Series that was decided in the final inning of the final game was in 1912. It saw the New York Giants against the Boston Red Sox. In a best-of-seven series format, game two ended in a tie, so onward to game eight they went, both tied at three games each. This game eight went into extra innings and was decided in the bottom of the 10th. The Red Sox won the game and the series. Whose heroics was it in the the bottom of that 10th inning that won it for Boston?

Answer: Larry Gardner

None of the others were born yet by 1912. After the Giants scoring a run in the top of the 10th, and with the Red Sox down 2-1, Clyde Engle began the bottom of the 10th as a pinch-hitter for pitcher Joe Wood. He reached base on a flyball error. After Steve Yerkes walked, Tris Speaker singled and scored Engle to tie it up. Larry Gardner then scored Yerkes on a sacrifice fly, and the Boston franchise won their second World Series title.
6. The 1968 World Series was a much anticipated battle between Cy Young and MVP winner Bob Gibson of the Cardinals, against Cy Young and MVP winning pitcher Denny McLain of the Tigers. In game seven in the top of the ninth, the Tigers scored another run, giving them the lead 4-0. The Cardinals came up with vengeance, but could only score one run via a Mike Shannon home run. Which Tiger pitcher put the brakes on the Cardinals in that final inning?

Answer: Mickey Lolich

The others were all Cardinal pitchers in the series. It was Lolich who went the entire distance for his third win in the series. For his efforts, he was awarded the series MVP. Tiger Al Kaline also went 11-for-29, hitting .379 with two home runs and eight RBIs.
7. The 1924 World Series saw the Washington Senators take their first World Series crown. It almost was not to be. Going into the bottom of the 12th inning with the series tied at 3-3, and this game also tied at 3-3, whose double would score Muddy Ruel to win the game and the World Series for Washington?

Answer: Earl McNeely

The others were all retired before 1900. Walter Johnson was the Senator pitcher, and he was in the thick of things in the bottom of the 12th, but as a batter. He reached base on an error after Ruel's double to left. McNeely doubled home Ruel for the unearned winning run. Ironically, that was Johnson's only win of the series against two losses. Goose Goslin batted .344 along with three home runs for Washington also.
8. The 1975 World Series was won by the Cincinnati Reds in the top of the ninth inning of game seven. After two walks to Ken Griffey and Pete Rose, Joe Morgan brought in the go-ahead run with a single, scoring Griffey. Who was at the losing end of this World Series?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

It was a close series with both teams being only one run and one hit apart for the series. The Red Sox had led game seven 3-0 going into the sixth innning, then the Reds began to peck away. Jim Burton took the loss for Boston.
9. In their fifth season in Major League baseball in 1997, the Florida Marlins won it all against the Cleveland Indians in the World Series. It didn't come easy though. In game seven, the Marlins had to come through twice. In the bottom of the ninth, they scored one run to tie it up on a Craig Counsell sacrifice fly that scored Moises Alou. The game went to the bottom of the 11th, and it was the Marlins who took care of business again. Who crossed the plate for the winning run?

Answer: Craig Counsell

The others hadn't started their Major League careers yet. Counsell was in his second season in the Majors, and came to the Marlins midseason in a trade from the Rockies. In the 11th inning, Counsell reached base on an error, then after an intentional walk and groundout to others, Edgar Renteria singled which scored Counsell.

The series MVP was Livan Hernandez. The Indians out-hit and outscored the Marlins in the series.
10. In 1973, the Oakland Athletics won their second consecutive World Series. However, the Mets did not go down without a fight, and staged a ninth inning game seven comeback that had the Athletics reeling. Which pitcher came in to relieve Rollie Fingers in the ninth with the bases loaded, get one out, and put an end to the Mets' hopes?

Answer: Darold Knowles

None of the others listed were pitchers, and they were all retired. Knowles came in with two outs and got Wayne Garrett to pop out. The Mets had 15 more hits than Oakland in the series. The Athletics would also win the World Series in 1974 against the Dodgers.
