He saw that the pitcher and first baseamn were confused and had lost sight of the ball, and he raced over to make the grab just in time.

What is interesting is the reason Koufax was pitching on two days rest. The first game of the Series fell on the Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, and Koufax therefore did not start until the 2nd game. He then pitched the 5th game, with Don Drysdale taking the ball in games 1 and 4.

However, for the decisive game 7 manager Walter Alston chose his ace Koufax over Drsydale, despite the short rest, and Koufax came up big. Koufax had lost the 2nd game, putting the Dodgers in a 2-0 hole, but the Dodgers rallied at home and took the next 3 games, then won the final game back in Minnesota.

After A's second baseman Mike Andrews made a key error in the 12th inning of game 2, Finley took him off the team. However, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn overruled Finley and ordered Andrews back on the team. There was quite a battle of wits between Whitey Herzog of the Cardinals and Dick Howser of the Royals leading up to the critical turning point. Howser sent the right-handed Motley to the plate to face the lefty Dayley. Herzog countered with right-hander Todd Worrell to replace Dayley, but Howser then countered with Orta in place of Motley.

After the blown call put Orta on, the Cardinals self-destructed, with first baseman Jack Clarke dropping an easy pop-up, and catcher Darrell Porter committing a passed ball.

The inning (and game) ended soon afterwards when Iorg drove in the tying and winning runs with a single to right.
