Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which was the last team in 2004 to be undefeated?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Amazingly, after a dismal 43-119 record in 2003, the Tigers began their season 4-0 to be the last team undefeated on April 9, including three road wins. They lost their first game to the Twins on April 10th. With some sly offseason acquistions, the Tigers hoped for the best. At the time the Tigers were 4-0, the other teams listed had only won one game.
2. Who was the second player in history to hit over 600 home runs?

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays hit the 600 mark in 1969 behind Babe Ruth. Hank Aaron reached the milestone in 1971. Mays who retired with 660, was the Godfather of Giant slugger Barry Bonds, who was the fourth player in history to reach 600 dingers.
3. Which of the following greats played the most seasons in Major League baseball?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

None of the others lasted more than 10 seasons, and Holloman only lasted one year. Ryan pitched for 27 seasons, retiring in 1993 with a career leading 5714 strikeouts. He won every major pitching award except for the Cy Young.
4. Which of the following players was the first to have 300 hits in a season?

Answer: None listed

George Sisler set a record in 1920 with the St. Louis Browns, hitting 257 times in the season. Surprisingly, Sisler began his career as a pitcher, and pitched off and on for seven seasons. He also batted .407 in 1920, but missed out on the MVP Award as it was not given out that season. He did win the MVP in 1922 when he batted .420.
5. In 1982, Rickey Henderson broke Lou Brock's single season stolen base record with 130 thefts. Who did Brock take the record away from with his own 118 in 1974?

Answer: Maury Wills

Except for Henderson, the others were pitchers. The Los Angeles Dodgers' Wills, was the first player in history to reach the 100 mark in a season in 1962, breaking Ty Cobb's record of 96. Cobb's record stood for almost 50 years.
6. Which of the following teams went to the World Series five times in the 1990s?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

None of the other teams saw World Series action in the 1990s. The Braves lost to Minnesota and Toronto in 1991 and 1992, but rebounded by defeating the Indians in 1995, 4 games to 2. In 1996 and 1999, the Braves collided with the Yankees, losing both times.
7. In 1947, who was the first little leaguer ever to graduate into Major League baseball six years later?

Answer: Joey Jay

The others did not play baseball in the 1950s. Jay broke in with the Milwaukee Braves at the age of 17 in 1953. In 1961, the Braves traded him to the Reds, where he blossomed into a 21-10 record, finishing fifth for the MVP Award. He retired back in a Braves uniform in 1966.
8. Which team in 2004 was the last to win a game?

Answer: Seattle

The Mariners were the last team to put a "W" in their column. They lost their first five games of the season. Hoping this was not an indicator of things to come, the Mariners looked forward to improve their 2nd place AL West 93-69, 2003 record.
9. Although I won the AL Rookie of the Year in 1986, and the AL MVP in 1988, I was much overshadowed by the great Mark McGwire early in my career. After parting company with 'McGwire's team', I was passed around the league, as I played for the Rangers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Devil Rays, Yankees, and White Sox. I hit 462 home runs in my career, and feel that I was black-balled out of baseball. Who am I?

Answer: Jose Canseco

The others were never teammates of Mark McGwire. After McGwire came along with 49 home runs in his rookie in 1987, Jose was in the back seat the rest of his years with the Athletics. In 2000, Canseco came forward to Major League Baseball and provided information and names of players who used illegal stimulants to 'bulk up'. After that, no team wanted anything to do with him.
10. Who was the first Yankee voted into baseball's Hall of Fame?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The others never played for the Yankees. The Babe was one of the first five inductees in 1936 into the Hall, joining Walter Johnson, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, and Christy Mathewson.
