1. Which woman golfer retired with a record 88 LPGA tournaments?

Answer: Kathy Whitworth

Whitworth, from Texas, turned professional in 1958, and won her first tour title at the 1962 Kelly Girls Open in Baltimore. The first of six majors was captured at the 1965 Titleholders Championship in Georgia. Her 88th and final tour victory came at the United Virginia Bank Classic in 1985.
2. "The Baggies" is the nickname of which English soccer team?

Answer: West Bromwich Albion

Founded in 1878, West Brom are one of the oldest professional clubs in England, and were founding members of the Football league in 1888. Based at The Hawthorns, the club enjoyed their greatest success prior to World War Two, winning the 1929 league championship, and three FA Cups, in 1888, 1892 and 1931. Further FA Cups followed in 1954 and 1968.
3. Which figure skater won two Olympic gold medals and six world titles in the 1980s?

Answer: Katarina Witt

Witt was born in Staaken, and represented the former East Germany in international competition. Her first major victory came at the 1983 European Championships, and, the following year, she captured gold at both the Winter Olympics and World Championships. Four years later, in Calgary, she successfully defended her Olympic crown.

She turned professional shortly afterwards, although she made a brief comeback at the 1994 Olympics, finishing seventh.
4. Which NFL star was nicknamed "The Minister of Defense"?

Answer: Reggie White

Reggie White, a defensive end, played college football for Tennessee, where he was voted SEC Player of the Year in 1983. He was drafted by the Memphis Showboats of the USFL in 1984, and played two seasons there until the league collapsed. He made his NFL debut with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1985, and spent eight years there, racking up a club-record 124 sacks.

He joined the Green Bay Packers in 1993, helping them to victory in Superbowl XXXI. He retired after the 1998 season, but made a single season comeback with the Carolina Panthers in 2000. Reggie sadly passed away in 2004, aged just 43.
5. Arnold Ray Cream was a world boxing champion of the 1950s, but under what name did he fight?

Answer: Jersey Joe Walcott

Walcott was born in New Jersey to Barbadian parents, and took his nickname from a well-known boxer from Barbados called Joe Walcott. He boxed in the heavyweight division, and fought for the world title three times in the 1940s, losing to Joe Louis twice and Ezzard Charles once.

He crossed swords with Charles twice more in 1951, losing the first contest, but finally getting his hands on the champions belt at the fifth time of asking in Pittsburgh on July 18th. He met Charles for the fourth time the following June, retaining his title, but was defeated by Rocky Marciano on September 23rd of that year.
6. Which swimmer, better known for his role as Tarzan in numerous movies, won five Olympic gold medals in the 1920s?

Answer: Johnny Weissmuller

Johnny Weissmuller was born in what is now Romania in 1904, and emmigrated to the USA with his parents whilst just a few months old. At the 1924 Olympics, in Paris, he won gold in the 100 m freestyle, 400 m freestyle and 4 x 200 m freestyle. Four years later, in Amsterdam, he retained his 100 m and relay titles. In 1929, he embarked on a new career, as an actor.
7. Which legendary basketball coach led UCLA to ten NCAA national titles in the 1960s and 70s?

Answer: John Wooden

John Wooden played college hoops at Purdue, where he helped the Boilermakers to the 1932 national title in the days before there was an official season-ending tournament. His first college head-coaching role was at Indiana State between 1946-48. Joining UCLA in 1948, he immediateley transformed a losing program.

The school's first national crown came in 1964, and they retained it the following year. After missing out in 1966, the Bruins would go on to win the crown in each of the next seven years.

A tenth and final title came in 1975, following which he retired from the sport.
8. Major League Baseball: Which baseball star, nicknamed "The Splendid Splinter", won the batting Triple Crown in both 1942 and 1947?

Answer: Ted Williams

Williams, from San Diego, made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox in 1939. He led the American League in RBIs in his debut season with 145, and led the league in runs in each of the following three seasons. His career was interrupted by World War Two, when he served in the marines.

He made his comeback with the Red Sox in 1946, promptly winning the league MVP award. A second hiatus in his career followed in 1952, due to the Korean War, but he was back the following year, and would play on until 1960, hitting a career 521 home runs, all with Boston.
9. Which US college has sports teams nicknamed "Badgers"?

Answer: Wisconsin

Based in the state capital of Madison, the Wisconsin Badgers are members of the Big Ten Conference. The school has won national championships in many sports, the most notable perhaps being ice hockey, when, in 2006, they became the first university in NCAA history to win both the men's and women's crowns in the same year.

The men's basketball team made the Final Four in both 1941 and 2000. The school's gridiron squad play home games at Camp Randall Stadium, and won three Rose Bowls in the 1990s.
10. What is the nickname of the Super 15 rugby union team based in Sydney, Australia?

Answer: Waratahs

The name Waratah comes from the state flower of New South Wales, and was used to represent the NSW teams which played touring international teams from 1882. The Super 12, as it was at the time, began in 1996 with 12 teams from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The Waratahs reached the final for the first time in 2008, losing to the Canterbury Crusaders from New Zealand.
