Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these Formula 1 drivers was tragically killed during the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola?

Answer: Ayrton Senna

Senna, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, made his Formula 1 debut with the Toleman team in 1984. Joining Lotus the following year, he won his first Grand Prix in Portugal, in just the second race of the 1985 season. A move to McLaren in 1988 saw him win his first World Championship, with further titles following in 1990 and 1991. Driving for Williams in 1994, he led the San Marino GP when his car hit a concrete wall during the sixth lap. Senna died shortly afterwards.
2. Which golfer won consecutive US Opens in 1988 and 1989?

Answer: Curtis Strange

Strange, from Norfolk, Virginia, defeated Nick Faldo in an 18-hole playoff to win the 1988 US Open at Brookline. He teed up at Oak Hill 12 months later knowing that no-one had successfully defended the title since Ben Hogan in 1951. A second round score of 64 played a major part as he held off Chip Beck, Mark McCumber and Ian Woosnam to retain his title by a single stroke.
3. Which swimmer won seven gold medals at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich?

Answer: Spitz

Mark Spitz, from Modesto, California, won two gold medals at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, both in relay events. Four years later, in Munich, he became the first person to win seven golds at a single games, triumphing in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle, 4x100m medley and 4x200m freestyle.

His record would eventually be overtaken by Michael Phelps who won eight gold medals at Beijing in 2008.
4. Which baseball legend played for both the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants before going on to manage both the New York Yankees and New York Mets?

Answer: Casey Stengel

Stengel made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in 1912 as an outfielder. After spells with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies between 1918 and 1921, he returned to the Big Apple to join the Giants, with whom he won a World Series ring in 1922.

He retired from playing in 1925 as a member of the Boston Braves. Stengel made his managerial debut with the Dodgers in 1934, joined the Braves in 1938, then took over the reins at Yankee Stadium in 1949. It was with the Bronx Bombers that he enjoyed the greatest success of his career, leading the Pinstripes to seven World Series titles between 1949 and 1958.

After retiring in 1960, he made a comeback in 1962 as manager of the expansion Mets. He finally retired for good aged 75 during the 1965 season.

Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966, Stengel is the only person to have worn the uniforms of all four New York MLB franchises, as either player or manager.
5. "The Black Cats" is the nickname of which English soccer team?

Answer: Sunderland

Sheffield Wednesday are nicknamed "The Owls", Southampton are known as "The Saints" and Stoke City are "The Potters".

Sunderland A.F.C. were formed in 1879 and joined the Football league in 1890. They won the league title in just their second season of membership, 1891/92, and successfully retained it the following season. Four more titles would follow by 1936, and the FA Cup was won for the first time in 1937. The club's fortunes declined after World War II, and they suffered relegation from the top tier for the first time in 1958. The remainder of the 20th century saw them yo-yoing between the top two divisions, with only a surprise FA Cup Final triumph over Leeds in 1973 to celebrate.
6. Which tennis player was forced to take two years out in the mid-1990s after being stabbed on court by a deranged spectator?

Answer: Monica Seles

Seles, from Novi Sad, Serbia, joined the WTA tour in 1989, and won her first Grand Slam event in Paris the following year. In 1991, she won all the Grand Slam events bar Wimbledon, and performed exactly the same feat the following year. Her only Wimbledon final, in 1992, saw her suffer defeat at the hands of Steffi Graf. Having retained the Australian Open in January 1993, another year of domination looked likely, but, in April, during a match in Hamburg vs Magdalena Maleeva, a "fan" of her great rival, Graf, ran on to the court and stabbed her.

Although she recovered physically fairly quickly, Seles didn't return to the circuit until the latter half of 1995. She won her final Grand Slam title in Australia in 1996.
7. In which sport do the balls have different coloured spots on them which indicate their speed and height of bounce?

Answer: Squash

A World Open in squash has been held for men since 1976, and for women since 1979. The slowest/lowest bowls are regarded as the hardest to hit so are used more often in competition. The lowest ball has an orange dot, whilst the next lowest, which has two yellow dots, is the one most used in international competition.
8. What is the nickname of sports teams from Arizona State University?

Answer: Sun Devils

Based in Tempe, Arizona State is a member of the Pacific-12 Conference. The most successful programs at the school include women's golf, which won it's seventh national title in 2009, and baseball, with five College World Series crowns during the 20th century. Highlights for the school's gridiron team include a Rose Bowl victory over Michigan in January 1987.
9. Which boxer defeated Muhammad Ali in 1978 to become World Heavyweight Champion?

Answer: Leon Spinks

Leon Spinks won gold in the light-heavyweight division at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. He turned pro the following year, then faced Ali in Las Vegas in February 1978 with the World Heavyweight title on the line. Spinks won on points after 15 rounds.

He was stripped of his title by the WBC for refusing to defend it against Ken Norton. He attempted to win back his crown in 1981, but was defeated in three rounds by Larry Holmes.
10. Which one of these NFL running backs spent his entire career with the Detroit Lions?

Answer: Barry Sanders

Sanders set various NCAA records whilst playing college football for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. He was the overall number three pick by the Lions in the 1989 NFL draft. In 10 seasons with Detroit, he was selected to the Pro Bowl in each one. He rushed for over 15,000 yards and 99 touchdowns in regular season play.

The Lions made the postseason five times during Sanders' time at the club, but the nearest they came to Super Bowl glory was a defeat by the Washington Redskins in the 1991/92 NFC Championship game.
