1. In 1930, which nation both hosted and won the first edition of soccer's World Cup?

Answer: Uruguay

The very first FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay in 1930. Thirteen countries took part in the tournament, which was won by the host nation, who defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final.
2. Which Hall of Fame quarterback won three NFL MVP awards between 1959 and 1967, and helped the Baltimore Colts defeat the New York Giants to win the 1958 NFL Championship?

Answer: Unitas

Johnny Unitas played college football for the University of Louisville, before being drafted into the NFL by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1955. He never played a down for the Steelers, and was picked up by the Colts in time for the 1956 season. In just his second season in Baltimore, he led the league in passing and was voted MVP of the NFL.

In 1958, in a game dubbed by the media as "the greatest game ever played", Unitas led the Colts to a 23-17 overtime win over the Giants in the NFL Championship Game.
3. Which one of these basketball stars led the Washington Bullets to the 1978 NBA title, earning the finals MVP award in the process?

Answer: Wes Unseld

Unseld played college basketball at Louisville, before being drafted by the Baltimore Bullets in 1968. He was voted both Rookie of the Year and NBA MVP in 1968/69. He remained with the Bullets after they relocated to Washington in the mid 1970s, and helped them defeat the Seattle Supersonics in the 1978 NBA finals.
4. Al and Bobby won seven Indianapolis 500s between them in the late 20th century - what is the surname of these brothers?

Bobby Unser won the Indy 500 in 1968, 1975 and 1981. His younger brother Al won in 1970, 1978, 1980 and 1981. For good measure, Al's son, Al Junior, won the race in both 1992 and 1994.
5. In 1997, which cyclist became the first German winner of the Tour de France?

Answer: Jan Ullrich

Ullrich, from Rostock, rode in his first Tour de France in 1996, and finished second in the overall classification behind Dane Bjarne Riis. Twelve months later, Ulrich took over the yellow jersey after stage 10, and held on to his lead all the way to Paris.

His only other major tour success came in the 1999 Vuelta e Espana. His last major triumph was a gold medal in the road race at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
6. Which legendary track athlete completed the 5000m and 10000m double at both the 1972 and 1976 summer Olympics?

Answer: Lasse Viren

Viren, from Finland, made his Olympic debut at Munich in 1972. In the 10000m, he set a new world record on his way to the gold medal. In the 5000m, he edged out Tunisia's Mohammed Gammoudi to complete a golden double. Four years later, in Montreal, Viren comfortably defended his 10000m title, but was pushed all the way in the 5000m by New Zealand's Dick Quax before becoming the first athlete to succesfully defend this particular title.
7. Catamounts is the nickname of sports teams from which one of these US colleges?

Answer: Vermont

The University of Vermont is situated in the state's largest city, Burlington. The Catamounts are members of the America East Conference for most sports; the school's ice hockey teams play in the Hockey East Association, whilst their skiers are part of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association. Up to and including the 2010-11 academic year, the Catamounts had won national titles in skiing six times, whilst the men's ice hockey squad had reached the Frozen Four twice.
8. Which golfer is most famous for throwing away a seemingly unassailable lead at the 1999 British Open?

Answer: Jean Van de Velde

Frenchman Van de Velde stood on the 18th tee at Carnoustie needing no worse than a double bogey to clinch his first major title. Unfortunately, he twice hit his ball into the Barry Burn as well as into a greenside bunker, and eventually holed out for a three-over-par seven.

He still had a second chance in the four-hole play-off, but Scotsman Paul Lawrie prevailed on home turf, and the Frenchman would never again come so close to winning the claret jug.
9. In 1981, who became the first baseball player to win the Rookie of the Year Award and the Cy Young Award in the same season?

Answer: Fernando Valenzuela

Valenzuela, from Mexico, won his first eight starts with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981, and would end the season with a record of 13-7. His good form continued into the World Series, where his 3-1 record helped the Dodgers to victory over the New York Yankees. He also took part in the All-Star Game that season, the first of six straight such appearances.
10. Which Argentinian tennis player won four Grand Slam singles titles in the late 1970s?

Answer: Guillermo Vilas

Vilas, from Buenos Aires, burst onto the scene in 1974 when he won seven tour titles, including the season-ending Masters. His first GS success came in Paris in 1977, where he thrashed Brian Gottfried in the final, 6-0,6-3,6-0. Three months later, in New York, he won the US Open, beating Jimmy Connors in the final in four sets. Victories in the Australian Open in both 1978 and 1979 were added to his resume, but he never progressed further than the quarter finals at Wimbledon.
