1. Which famous soccer club won the first five editions of the European Champions Cup between 1956 and 1960?

Answer: Real Madrid

Founded in 1902, Real Madrid won their first Spanish Cup in 1905, and their first League Championship in 1932. The first-ever European Champions Cup took place in season 1955-56, and Real won it, defeating French team Stade de Reims in the final. They would win it in each of the following four seasons as well, before losing to fierce rivals Barcelona in the fist round of the 1960-61 edition.

In 2001-02, in Glasgow, Real defeated German club Bayer Leverkusen to win Europe's top soccer prize for a then-record ninth time.
2. Which Soviet pairs skater won ten World Championships and three Olympic gold medals between 1969 and 1980?

Answer: Irina Rodnina

Rodnina, from Moscow, partnered Alexei Ulanov to gold in the World Championships each year between 1969 and 1972, as well as winning gold at the 1972 Winter Olympics. A change of partner to Alexander Zaitsev brought even more success. The duo won the World Championship six straight times between 1973 and 1978, as well as gold in the Winter Olympics of both 1976 and 1980.
3. In 1987, who became the first Irish cyclist to win the Tour de France?

Answer: Stephen Roche

Roche, from Dublin, turned professional in 1981, winning the Tour of Corsica in his debut season. In 1985, he secured his first stage win in the Tour de France, as well as finishing third in the overall classification. In 1987, he won his first major tour with victory in the Giro d'Italia, then, a few weeks later, defeated Pedro Delgado to become the first Irishman to win the Tour de France. Roche retired from the sport following the 1993 season.

Answer: Cal Ripken Jr

Ripken made his Major League debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 1981. In May 1982, he began his amazing streak of consecutive games, surpassing Lou Gehrig's record of 2130 games in September 1995. His streak finally ended when he left himself out of the lineup for the Orioles' last home game of the 1998 season. Apart from the streak, highlights of Ripken's career include a World Series ring in 1983, two AL MVP awards and 19 All-Star Game appearances.
5. If you were in Australia and attended a match between Brisbane Broncos and Sydney Roosters, which sport would you be watching?

Answer: Rugby League

Rugby League is one of the most popular spectator sports in Australia. The National Rugby League was founded in 1997, and is the top level of competition in the sport. Brisbane Broncos play home games at Suncorp Stadium, whilst Sydney Roosters are based at Sydney Football Stadium.
6. Which eight-time Stanley Cup winner was the first NHL player to score 50 goals in a season?

Answer: Maurice Richard

Nicknamed "Rocket", Richard made his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens in 1942-43. In 1944-45 he became the first player to score 50 goals in a season, doing so in just 50 games. In 18 seasons with the Habs, he scored 544 goals and amassed 965 points. He retired following the 1959-60 season, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1961.
7. Which male tennis player took on Billie Jean King in a "Battle of the Sexes" match at the Houston Astrodome in 1973?

Answer: Bobby Riggs

Riggs, a former Wimbledon and US National champion, was 55 years old when he challenged 29-year old King, buoyed by his one-sided victory over Margaret Court earlier that year. King won the best-of-five sets match 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, in front of 30,372 fans.
8. Which of the following is the nickname of sports teams from the University of Arkansas?

Answer: Razorbacks

The University of Arkansas is based in Fayetteville, and is a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In 1964, the school's gridiron squad went undefeated and won a share of the National Championship (with Alabama). In 1994, the school's men's basketball team defeated Duke 76-72 to win the National Championship.

The most successful sport in Razorbacks history is track. The men's outdoor squad won their 19th national title in 2006, to add to the 10 indoor titles they won up to 2003.
9. Which three-time Super Bowl winner retired with NFL records for receiving yards and total touchdowns?

Answer: Jerry Rice

Rice, from Crawford, Mississippi, played college ball at Mississippi Valley State. He was drafted into the NFL by the San Francisco 49ers in 1985. In just his 3rd season, in 1987, he was named NFL MVP. The following year he won his first Super Bowl ring in a win over the Cincinnati Bengals, and a second followed 12 months later when the Denver Broncos were on the losing side.

His third and last ring came in the 1994-95 season when the Niners defeated the San Diego Chargers. After 16 record-breaking seasons in San Francisco, Rice spent the last four years of his career with the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks, retiring after the 2004 season.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.
10. Which basketball Hall of Famer won 11 NBA titles with the Boston Celtics between 1957 and 1969?

Answer: Bill Russell

Russell played college hoops for the University of San Francisco, helping them to two national championship in 1955 and 1956. He was drafted by the St Louis Hawks, but traded to the Celtics shortly afterwards. Ironically, in Russell's first season, 1956-57, the Celtics and Hawks met in the NBA finals, and it was Boston who prevailed to win the first title in franchise history.

After the Hawks turned the tables in 1958, the Celtics would set out on a period of total dominance, winning eight straight titles between 1959 and 1966. Russell would win five league MVP awards during this period.

In 1966-67, Russell combined his playing duties with the role of head coach, and would win another two championships as player and coach before retiring from both roles in 1969.
