Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although they are never explicitly named in the episode, what alien species, introduced in the first season of "Star Trek: TNG", takes over the Enterprise NX-01 in "Acquisition"?

Answer: Ferengi

The Ferengi made their first appearance in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the fifth episode of season one, entitled "The Last Outpost". Since that time, the Ferengi and their insatiable desire for riches and commerce have been a mainstay of the "Star Trek" universe.

But how to include the Ferengi in a prequel series without ruining the niceties of the "Star Trek" timeline? Easy, never give a name to the species in their one and only encounter. It would be more than 200 years before the next official encounter between the Ferengi and the Federation.
2. Ulis, the leader of the alien crew, was played by the actor who previously played the role of Neelix on "Star Trek: Voyager". What is his name?

Answer: Ethan Phillips

Ethan Phillips is best known to "Star Trek" fans as the Talaxian morale officer and chef aboard Voyager, although his first appearance was as a Ferengi in the "Star Trek: TNG" season three episode, "Ménage à Troi".

The other Ferengi crew members were played by Matt Malloy (Grish), Clint Howard (Muk), and Jeffrey Combs (Krem). Howard is the younger brother of director Ron Howard, and is no stranger to "Star Trek"... he played the child-like Balok from the "Star Trek: TOS" episode "The Corbomite Maneuver". And you might also remember Jeffrey Combs from the two "Enterprise" episodes that featured the Andorians... he played the part of Commander Shran.
3. As the aliens board the Enterprise, it quickly becomes evident that the whole crew has been rendered unconscious. Everyone, that is, except for Commander Tucker. Why?

Answer: He was in the decontamination chamber.

While everyone else on the ship was caught by the boobytrapped artifact brought on board (by Commander Tucker), Tucker was in the decontamination chamber at the time of the attack. The sealed room prevented the knockout gas from affecting him.

It also meant that once Trip was able to get out of the decon chamber, he had to roam the ship in his underwear to get a handle on the situation.

Commander Charles Tucker III (Trip) was played by Connor Trinneer.
4. The alien scavengers wake Captain Archer up, and once their universal translator kicks in, what do they demand that Archer show them?

Answer: The location of the ship's vault

It doesn't take long for Captain Archer to clue in to the mercurial nature of the aliens. He initially tries to deny that there is a vault on board, but then he hears the aliens' plan to take the females to a slave market on Stameris. Archer changes tactics to try to make a deal with them, pretending that only he knows the location of the vault, and in exchange for showing them, would get to keep a cut of the gold in the vault for himself.

The play for time works, as Archer's demand for 35% of the gold is too high for the Ferengi, and they decide to keep trying to find the (imaginary) vault without his help.

Captain Jonathan Archer was played by Scott Bakula.
5. In addition to collecting everything that isn't nailed down, the aliens also gather all the female crew members into the launch bay, for eventual sale as slaves. Which one catches the eye of Krem, the youngest of the scavengers?

Answer: Sub-Commander T'Pol

T'Pol's pointy ears catch Krem's attention as he is moving all the women into the launch bay. He takes a few moments to caress them and marvel at T'Pol, likely imagining her selling value as a slave, or perhaps as his own personal slave. He asks Archer all sorts of questions about her, but the captain tries to downplay her attractiveness by saying, "Trust me. She's got no sense of humor. She's always complaining."

Jolene Blalock played the part of Sub-Commander T'Pol.
6. Archer is forced to help Krem load the stolen goods on the alien vessel while the others continue searching the ship. What 'Rule of Acquisition' does Krem NOT mention in their conversation?

Answer: You can't free a fish from water.

Krem is very subservient to his cousin Ulis, and Ulis (and the other two Ferengi) take advantage of this by giving him menial jobs and a smaller share of the profit. Throughout their conversation, Archer tries to point these inequities to him, hoping to get Krem to stand up to his cousin.

When Krem quotes the Rule, "Never allow family to stand in the way of opportunity", Archer tries to make a side bargain with Krem, giving him 50% of the imaginary gold in the vault to turn against the others.
7. Commander Tucker steals a hypospray from the aliens and revives Sub-Commander T'Pol. Which other officer does he also (unsuccessfully) try to wake up?

Answer: Ensign Sato

When the captain manages to send Krem off to get food and water from the galley, he and Trip get a few moments to come up with a plan to save the ship. The first step is getting more help, which Trip manages to do with the hypospray that the Ferengi had used to revive Archer.

In the launch bay where the Ferengi have gathered all of the women, Tucker goes to revive T'Pol first, but when he tries to also revive Hoshi, he finds that the hypospray is empty... there had only been enough for two doses.

Ensign Hoshi Sato was played by Linda Park.
8. After setting up a fake vault in the bowels of the ship, Tucker gets captured by the aliens.

Answer: True

Trip lets himself get captured as part of the plan he and the captain made. When Tucker is brought into the presence of Archer, Trip pretends to betray his fellow humans, claiming that his wife is one of the women that the Ferengi want to sell into slavery. He says he is willing to show them where the captain has hidden the vault, in exchange for leaving the women behind.

To make their ruse believable, Archer and Tucker actually get into a fight over the matter, with the captain threatening to throw Trip into the brig for insubordination.
9. T'Pol approaches Krem and begs him to rescue her from the humans that are keeping her prisoner. What does Krem ask T'Pol to do for him?

Answer: Perform 'oo-mox' (caress his lobes)

The ruse allows T'Pol to get close to the armed Ferengi, and while she is performing oo-mox on Krem, she takes the opportunity to give him the Vulcan nerve pinch, rendering him unconscious. She then takes his pistol and keys, unlocks the captain from the shackles Krem had put him in, and then makes her way to the fake vault to await the arrival of Tucker and the other three Ferengi.
10. The three Enterprise officers manage to outwit the alien scavengers, and after supervising the return of all that had been stolen, Captain Archer lets them go.

Answer: True

Yes, Captain Archer lets the four Ferengi leave, but he does so with a warning that if their species should come within a light year of any Vulcan or Earth ship, they would regret it. He also suggests that they should give Krem a little more respect.

Krem is left in command of the Ferengi vessel with Ulis, Muk and Grish all in manacles. As they depart, the three of them begin to vie with each other to offer Krem the best bribe, but Krem just lets them natter on, fully enjoying his change of status.
