Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Captain Archer, Sub-Commander T'Pol and Commander Tucker are having dinner with an alien trader named D'Marr at the beginning of the episode, from whom they learn of an abandoned spaceship ripe for salvage. Who played the savvy D'Marr, also known for hosting "Dancing with the Stars"?

Answer: Tom Bergeron

Tom Bergeron is primarily known as a television host for various shows, most prominent among them "America's Funniest Home Videos" (or "AFV" for short) and "Dancing with the Stars". This was Tom's first time sitting in the makeup chair to play an alien in a "Star Trek" series, and he comes back again to appear near the end of season four as a different character.

During the dinner, D'Marr is unwilling to trade for what the Enterprise officers are offering, but states that there is an abandoned ship just waiting for a salvage crew. The only problem with it (why HE hasn't salvaged it) is that it is haunted.

Scott Bakula played the role of Captain Jonathan Archer, Jolene Blalock was Sub-Commander T'Pol, and Connor Trinneer portrayed Commander Charles 'Trip' Tucker III.
2. Arriving at the crashed ship, the away team scans and finds no biosigns, but they nevertheless see 'ghosts' moving in the ship. Which away team member sees the first person?

Answer: Sub-Commander T'Pol

The away team splits into pairs to explore the ship after they land on the surface of the planet - Archer with Mayweather, and Tucker with T'Pol. It is while Tucker and T'Pol are examining the dilithium chamber in the engine room that T'Pol sees the reflection of a person watching them, but when they turn around, the person is gone.

Ensign Travis Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery.
3. A number of colonists have been living on the ship, hiding in an oasis that is shielded by a dampening field. How long do the colonists say they've been on the planet?

Answer: Three years

The surviving Kantare crew tell a story of how an unknown alien ship attacked them, forcing them to flee, and eventually crash. They decided not to send out a distress call, believing that doing so would lead the aliens right to them to finish the job. They also established the dampening field around their 'oasis', an aeroponics bay with plants to sustain them.

Seeing that the ship is in moderately good repair, Tucker believes that he can get it flying again. The Kantare captain graciously accepts Captain Archer's offer of assistance.

Captain Kuulan was played by Rudolph Willrich.
4. The chief engineer of the Kantare ship was played by an actor already familiar to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" fans. Who played the role of Ezral?

Answer: René Auberjonois

René Auberjonois played the role of Constable Odo, the shape-shifting head of security on "Deep Space Nine" (1993-1999). His portrayal of Ezral is the only other appearance he made in the different "Star Trek" television series, although he did play the part of the human Colonel West in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (1991).
5. Ezral's daughter Liana gets to know one of the Enterprise crew quite closely. With whom does she flirt?

Answer: Tucker

The chemistry between Trip and Liana is quite obvious from the outset, and almost immediately elicits scorn from T'Pol, who brings up his previous romantic liaisons with alien women in comparison, specifically referring to Ah'len, the Xyrillian engineer that got Tucker pregnant in the episode "Unexpected".

Liana was portrayed by Annie Wersching.
6. Lieutenant Reed discovers discrepancies in the colonists' story, the most telling of which is the actual amount of time the ship has been on the planet. How long ago did the ship REALLY crash?

Answer: 22 years

Lieutenant Reed's analysis reveals that oxidation of the ship's outer hull indicates that it has been on the planet 22 years, and while there is impact damage from the crash, there is no sign of weapons damage. In addition to these discrepancies, they also determine that the oasis within the ship is not large enough to sustain the population of the colony - not for three years and especially not for 22 years.

Lieutenant Malcolm Reed was played by Dominic Keating.
7. Inexplicably, an escape pod from the Kantare ship is discovered in orbit of the planet holding the body of a long-dead Liana.

Answer: False

A body is discovered in the escape pod, but it is actually that of Shilat, a male Kantare crew member met earlier in the episode. At the time the pod is discovered, Liana is visiting the Enterprise NX-01. Faced with this proof that her people are lying about their situation, she has no choice but to tell the truth. What that truth is, however, is not revealed to the viewer until they go back to the surface to confront the crew.

Donald Sage Mackay played the role of Shilat.
8. A team returns to the planet to confront the colonists, but before anything can be resolved, two of the Enterprise crew are captured and held hostage. Which ones?

Answer: Tucker and T'Pol

T'Pol, still on the planet working on the ship's systems, had already been taken into custody after she discovered something about the Kantare deception. When Archer, Tucker and Reed (along with Liana) return from the Enterprise to confront the colonists, they do not arrive to a friendly reception.

Being the two officers most capable of completing the repairs needed on the ship, the Kantare crew keep T'Pol, and take Tucker as well, ordering the others to return to their ship. Liana tries to appeal to her father to convince Captain Kuulan to let them all go, but he doesn't listen.
9. When a rescue mission is mounted, the secret of the colonists is revealed. They are nearly all, in fact, holograms. How many of them are actually real, live people?

Answer: Two

During the rescue attempt, things do not go well for the Enterprise crew members. The hologram Kentare crew are able to walk through walls, and any phase pistol blasts fired at them go right through them. Tucker convinces Liana to help them by removing a number of data cards from the computer console, causing all the holograms to disappear.

The only ones left are Liana and her father Ezral.
10. Which of the Kantare crew was responsible for the deaths of all the others that perished so long ago?

Answer: Ezral

With no other recourse, Ezral reveals the truth about everything. It was actually a plasma storm that caused the damage to the ship 22 years ago. Ezral, the chief engineer, chose to leave his post to save his daughter, in the process causing the deaths of the rest of the crew. Stranded on the planet after the crash, Ezral decided to recreate the crew as holograms in an effort to provide a somewhat normal upbringing for his infant daughter.

After everything, Ezral agrees to let Tucker effect the repairs needed to get the ship flying again and to return to their home planet.
