Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Vox Sola" opens with an irate group of aliens demanding to leave the Enterprise after being grievously offended during first contact. What is the name of the species?

Answer: Kreetassan

The Kreetassans are escorted from the ship by the Captain along with Commander Tucker and Sub-Commander T'Pol, and with Ensign Sato trying to translate. Unfortunately, the aliens leave without anyone from the Enterprise NX-01 figuring out why they were so suddenly offended.

The officers in the opening cut were played by Scott Bakula (Archer), Connor Trinneer (Tucker), Jolene Blalock (T'Pol), and Linda Park (Sato). Their Kreetassan counterparts were portrayed by Vaughn Armstrong, Mark Major, and Louis Ortiz.
2. As the aliens leave, a web-like creature sneaks onto the Enterprise before the airlock closes. After searching the ship, it eventually settles into which room?

Answer: The cargo bay

Two crewmen in engineering are seen discussing the ship's evening entertainment when Crewman Kelly notices a power failure in one of the ship's cargo bays. She sends Crewman Rostov to check it out before going to the movie night, figuring that the problem could be fixed within 10 minutes.

Crewman Kelly was played by Renee Goldsberry, while Joseph Will was Crewman Rostov.
3. Captain Archer is in a foul mood after the diplomatic disaster; which crew member visits him to try and cheer him up?

Answer: Commander Tucker

Probably his closest friend on the ship (if Captains are allowed to have friends), Trip knows just how to cheer the Captain up. At first, Trip attempts to bring him out of his funk by mentioning the prime rib and horseradish on the menu, and when that doesn't work, offers to play some pool.

When neither suggestion works to engage the Captain, Trip pulls out a computer card with a new water polo match; the Texas vs. Stanford final, which finally does the trick.
4. The symbiotic alien's presence begins to affect ship systems, including the scheduled movie night in the mess hall. What 1953 movie was scheduled to play?

Answer: "The Wages of Fear"

"The Wages of Fear" ("Le salaire de la peur" in the original French) was based on the novel of the same name by Georges Arnaud. Ensign Mayweather talks Lieutenant Reed into attending the show with the promise that things get blown up. But before the film even begins, the screen malfunctions and begins showing pictures of various parts of the ship.

All of the other films mentioned were released in the 1950s, but "All About Eve" was released in 1950, "12 Angry Men" in 1957, and "North by Northwest" in 1959.

Ensign Mayweather was portrayed by Anthony Montgomery, while Lieutenant Reed was played by Dominic Keating.
5. Engineering crewmen Kelly and Rostov investigate the malfunctions caused by the alien entity and are both ensnared, but not before Kelly manages to contact the Captain. Archer, along with Tucker, Reed, and a security officer, rush to deal with the situation. The alien web snares all but one of the newcomers. Who gets away?

Answer: Lieutenant Reed

Crewman Rostov tries to warn the four officers away when they arrive at the cargo bay, but the alien web is too quick, grabbing Archer and Tucker right away. The Captain immediately orders Reed and the security officer to leave, but only Reed manages to do so, managing to slice off a piece of alien tentacle in the process.
6. Who determines that the alien web is sensitive to electromagnetic (EM) radiation?

Answer: Dr. Phlox

In the situation room, T'Pol, Reed and Sato work together to find a solution, while Dr. Phlox examines the severed tentacle in an isolation chamber. Hoshi believes that the best course of action is to try to communicate with the creature, whose emissions seem to be mathematical and thus possibly a language. T'Pol, however, believes that time is of the essence, and orders Reed to construct some EM emitters.

John Billingsley played the role of Dr. Phlox.
7. EM emitters are constructed and used against the alien in an effort to free the trapped crew members. What is the result?

Answer: All the trapped crew feel intense pain.

When everyone (conscious) cries out in pain when the EM emitters are used on the alien, it is concluded that somehow, the creature has linked everyone together with itself.

As the attempt of a direct attack failed, T'Pol orders Hoshi to pursue her original idea of trying to communicate with the alien. She also cautions Hoshi that she has a limited amount of time to accomplish this.
8. Ensign Mayweather is the only officer on the bridge when the Kreetassans return and hail the Enterprise. He is surprised to discover that the Kreetassan captain can now speak English. The Captain explains that they had been offended by being expected to dine with females (Hoshi & T'Pol).

Answer: False

Actually, the Kreetassans were offended by the act of eating in public. While their species also ingest food with their mouths, the act of eating is a private thing, on the same level as having sex is to humans.

With the misunderstanding now understood, Ensign Mayweather apologizes again on behalf of Captain Archer, and this time the Kreetassan captain accepts the apology.
9. Ensign Sato has difficulty learning the alien's language, and is only able to succeed with help. From whom?

Answer: Sub-Commander T'Pol

Despite feeling that T'Pol was criticizing her abilities earlier in the episode, Ensign Sato still goes to her for help, knowing that her Vulcan logic would be instrumental in understanding the mathematical language of the alien.

Before too much time has passed, they are able to talk to the alien and convince it to release its captives.
10. The alien releases its captives when asked, and Hoshi learns that it is a symbiotic creature that needs to link to others. Without its own kind to link to, it linked with the humans it captured. What happens to the alien?

Answer: It is returned to its homeworld.

As it turns out, the Kreetassans knew the location of the alien web's homeworld, having visited it briefly, which is how it had come to attach itself to their hull. The Kreetassan captain provides them with the coordinates of the alien's world, and the Enterprise makes its way there directly.

Now able to communicate, the alien symbiote provides them with the location on the planet that it wants to go, and when they return the creature, it joins up with what looks like a giant web covering much of the planet.
