Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is the Enterprise headed when they get sidetracked by the discovery of an Earth-like planet?

Answer: A nebula

Before the opening credits, two crewmen are talking in the mess - Elizabeth Cutler and Ethan Novakovich - when they see a planet through the porthole. They soon find out that, as part of the Enterprise's science team, they have been chosen to join the away team on a survey mission to the planet's surface.

Cutler was played by Kellie Waymire, while Henri Lubatti played Novakovich.
2. Class 'M' planets can support humanoid life, according to Starfleet classification, but T'Pol explains that Vulcans still use own term for such planets. What is it?

Answer: Minshara-class

Class 'L' and 'N' planets are also capable of supporting humanoid life, but Class 'L' planets are mostly arid with little water surface, while Class 'N' planets have little land, typically with 90% of the planet surface covered with water.

The first time the term 'Class 'M'' was used in a "Star Trek" episode was in the original series, in the very first pilot episode made, "The Cage", referring to the planet Talos IV.

Sub-Commander T'Pol was played by Jolene Blalock.
3. A moderately large away team descends to the planet's surface and spends the afternoon exploring. Who makes the initial request to stay on the planet overnight?

Answer: Sub-Commander T'Pol

While still on the Enterprise, T'Pol had explained that the Vulcan way of surveying a new planet was to send probes down and gather data for the better part of a week. Now that they are on the planet and exploring, though, she actually asks Captain Archer if she can spend the night to do further observation and testing, along with Cutler and Novakovich.

Once it is determined that they are staying, both Tucker and Mayweather beg the Captain to also be allowed to stay, although their reasoning is more for the experience of being in the fresh air, rather than for scientific curiosity.

Scott Bakula played Captain Archer, while Commander Tucker was played by Connor Trinneer, and Anthony Montgomery was Ensign Mayweather.
4. With tents set up for the night, the five Enterprise crew members sit around a campfire, relaxing. Who tells a space-faring ghost story?

Answer: Ensign Mayweather

Travis Mayweather tells a story of a lifepod discovered in deep space with life signs brought on board a ship. As the crew tries to open the pod, there are sounds like tapping coming from within, but when they finally get it open, the lifepod is empty. Mayweather then ends the story, saying that the crew member who opened the pod ended up damaging the ship and launching himself into space in a lifepod of his own.
5. A wicked windstorm kicks up and the tents are not an adequate shelter. Where do the five crew members go for safety?

Answer: A cave

During the afternoon, Sub-Commander T'Pol discovered a cave, and it proves to be fortuitous that she did. One problem arises when they arrive, however - no one remembered to grab the food packs.

Ensign Mayweather volunteers to go back for them, and while he is back at the campsite, he believes he sees humanoid figures walking amongst the trees. He is only the first of the crew to begin to see things.
6. Despite the scans that showed no humanoid lifeforms on the planet, the crew members begin seeing people in the shadows. Who freaks out and runs out into the storm?

Answer: Crewman Novakovich

Tucker and Mayweather follow Novakovich out into the storm, but are unable to locate him. With the poor visibility, they nearly step off the edge of a cliff!

On their way back to the cave, they also see humanoid figures, coming out of rocks, and sincerely believe that they are not alone on the planet.
7. Who believes that they see Sub-Commander T'Pol conversing with the 'aliens'?

Answer: Crewman Cutler

With Tucker and Mayweather out in the storm trying to track down Novakovich, only Cutler and T'Pol are left in the cave. They begin to separately explore the cave, and while they are doing so, Cutler 'sees and hears' T'Pol talking to some humanoid aliens.

When Tucker and Mayweather return, she tells them of what she 'observed', and then all three remaining crew members become suspicious of T'Pol.
8. The crew member who gets lost in the storm is found by the Enterprise scanners and beamed up. What does Dr. Phlox determine is the cause of the hallucinations?

Answer: A pollen

At first, Captain Archer and Lieutenant Reed try to fly down in the shuttle, but they are unable to land in the storm, and damage the shuttle in the process. As a second option, they resort to the transporter, but problems ensue.

During the transport there is a malfunction, and Crewman Novakovich materializes with plant matter and rocks and other bits of material fused into his skin. He is rushed to sickbay, where Dr. Phlox has a difficult time stabilizing him.

In the process of trying to save Novakovich, Dr. Phlox is able to determine that it is a pollen that has caused everyone to hallucinate, and that the windstorm has increased the effect. With everyone else now in the cave system, Dr. Phlox advises that simply waiting long enough will reduce the effects.

Not long afterwards, however, Novakovich takes a turn for the worse, and Dr. Phlox belatedly learns that the pollen also has a poisonous effect, and develops an antidote to inoculate the others.

Lieutenant Reed was portrayed by Dominic Keating.
9. Trip really starts wigging out and believes that T'Pol is in collusion with the aliens; he threatens to kill her with his phase pistol. Who calms him down?

Answer: Captain Archer

Speaking to Trip over the comms, Captain Archer spins an elaborate story about a Top Secret mission to make contact with the silicon-based lifeforms on this planet, and that Sub-Commander T'Pol is the only one authorized to negotiate with the supposed 'aliens'. T'Pol is able to take direction from Ensign Sato in Vulcan on how to play along, and together they are able to calm Tucker down.

The moment he lowers his phase pistol, T'Pol stuns him with her own phase pistol.

Ensign Sato was played by Linda Park.
10. Dr. Phlox prepares an inoculation and beams it down to the surface. While administering the hyposprays, T'Pol must give a Vulcan nerve pinch to which one of the crew members to keep him/her from resisting?

Answer: Ensign Mayweather

Crewman Cutler and Ensign Mayweather were already succumbing to the poisonous effects of the pollen when T'Pol stunned Tucker. T'Pol quickly goes around to each crew member to administer the inoculation, beginning with Tucker and Cutler, but when she comes to Mayweather, he starts to stand up to keep away from her. Without a moment's hesitation, she gives him the Vulcan nerve pinch, knocking him out. She then completes the inoculations for him and herself.

When he recovers, he comments to Cutler how his neck is sore, and he doesn't know why.
