Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams completed their first Detour of the race in what city?

Answer: London, England

Teams didn't have a Detour in the first leg of the race, so when they flew to London in the second Leg and came across a clue at the London Tower Bridge, only ten teams made a choice between two tasks-- 'About Face' and 'Pancake Race'. In 'About Face', teams joined the Queen's Guard at Somerset House and learned how to perform a traditional changing of the guard, working with a drill instructor to complete the steps and commands. Misti and Jim, Tim and Te Jay, Kym and Alli, Brooke and Robbie, Amy and Maya, and Shelley and Nici completed this.

In 'Pancake Race', in the shadow of British Parliament, teams made pancakes and then raced around a marked course, flipping the pancakes, in a time under a minute and fifteen seconds. Adam and Bethany, Keith and Whitney, Michael and Scott, and Dennis and Isabelle completed this task.
2. While the 'Pony Up' Detour task in Scotland (in Leg 3) featured Shetland ponies, the 'Light My Fire' task included which of these?

Answer: Vikings

Teams visited the Shetland Islands in Leg 3 taking on one of two tasks for a Detour in another leg of the race that didn't feature a Road Block. In 'Pony Up' teams headed into the Peats of Scalloway to use a tusker to cut fifty blocks of peat from peat bank.

Then, they needed to deliver two loads of peat uphill on the back of a Shetland pony. Misti and Jim, Shelley and Nici, Amy and Maya, and Adam and Bethany mastered this task. In 'Light My Fire' teams instead had to properly build a viking torch using a three-step process then deliver and light it for a group of vikings for their next clue. Keith and Whitney, Kym and Alli, Michael and Scott, Brooke and Robbie, and Tim and Te Jay all completed this one.
3. A number of people switched Detours in Leg 4 (in Copenhagen, Denmark) because it was too difficult to transport a wedding cake with which of these?

Answer: A bicycle

Heading into the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark in Leg 4, teams could either pay attention to the details in 'Parking Space' or tread carefully in 'Wedding Cake' for their Detour selections. In the former, teams had to repurpose a parklet, choosing between a garden or living room setting that they would need to design based on a photo reference. If they could set it up within thirty minutes they'd get their clue (which Amy and Maya, Tim and Te Jay, Shelley and Nici, Adam and Bethany, and Keith and Whitney did).

In the latter, teams had to finish and deliver a traditional multi-tiered Danish wedding cake by local bike (known as a Bullitt). When delivered intact (with all accoutrements), Kym and Alli, Brooke and Robbie, and Misti and Jim nabbed a receipt they could trade for their next clue.
4. During Leg 5, teams encountered the Double U-Turn. Keith and Whitney fell victim to it, but did it result in their elimination?

Answer: Yes

In this leg of the race, teams joined in one of two tasks in Jemaa el-Fnaa in Marrakesh, Morocco. In 'Twirl Time', Kym and Alli, Shelley and Nici, and Amy and Maya perfected a traditional gnawa dance, joining a troupe and becoming street performers for a solid minute of hat-twirling and performing on-beat.

In 'Tea Time' teams had to deliver a tea set and samovar to a local restaurant and properly serve a tray of drinks the Moroccan way (with high pours). Adam and Bethany, Brooke and Robbie, Misti and Jim, Tim and Te Jay, and Keith and Whitney did this.

Shelley and Nici opted to use the Double U-Turn on Keith and Whitney, sending them back to complete 'Twirl Time' and resulting in their elimination.
5. Only two teams completed the 'Camp' Detour task in Leg 6. One was Misti and Jim, but what other team build a Moroccan Berber camp?

Answer: Tim and Te Jay

Leaving the city of Marrakesh, teams reached the towns at the foot of the Atlas Mountains and chose between 'Camp' and 'Cream' for their Detour task. Misti and Jim and Tim and Te Jay completed 'Camp', which involved building a Berber camp with provided items as per an example setup.

The rest headed into the casbah for 'Cream', stopping by to catch and milk goats to fill a marked bowl, then using a traditional method of making goat butter by churning an animal skin. Once they had 3oz of butter, they got their clue.
6. Leg 7 had a limited station Detour in Palermo, Sicily. How many teams could complete the 'Painters' option?

Answer: Four

And four teams did complete 'Painters' in which they had to visit a local church and, lying with their backs on high scaffolds, restore frescos to meet the standards of the local priest. Misti and Jim, Kym and Alli, Adam and Bethany, and Tim and Te Jay made it in time to snag this tough task. Brooke and Robbie and Amy and Maya were stuck with 'Posers', taking them to the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi to watch opera singers perform and then, heading to the costume department, identify their outfits and mark their names and plays on a playbill. If they got all ten correct, they'd get their clue.
7. For the first time on "The Amazing Race", teams had which of these to contend with during the Detour in Malta (in Leg 8)?

Answer: A clue without task instructions

In what would be deemed a 'Blind Detour', teams found a clue at the Church of St. Scholastica containing no 'additional information'. Instead, they had to use instinct to choose between either 'Flag' or 'Shine', only receiving their info when they arrived.

In 'Flag', teams needed to participate in a game known as gostra, which involved grabbing flags from the end of a greased pole. No team fully completed the task. Instead, five teams completed 'Shine', sending them to the Gate of Province to shine armor using traditional techniques. Adam and Bethany, forced to use their Express Pass by the end of the leg, used it to skip 'Flag' and head directly to the eighth Pit Stop.

They placed first.
8. Which team did not take the 'China Cups' Detour option and receive a Singaporean massage in Leg 9?

Answer: Misti and Jim

Being handed a Detour clue at Raffles Place in Singapore, teams had the option to go for 'China Cups' or 'Chili Crabs', the first of which involved deep tissue massage, exfoliation, and glass cupping and the latter of which involved hot chili crab meat. Misti and Jim were the only team to take 'Chili Crabs' while Adam and Bethany skipped both, taking the Fast Forward.

Interestingly this leg also saw a Double U-Turn get used. Amy and Maya used it, ineffectively, on Adam and Bethany. No one else opted into its use.
9. How many teams waded into Manila Bay in Leg 10 to complete the 'Catch' Detour option?

Answer: One

Visiting Manila, the capital of the Philippines, in Leg 10, teams had to choose between 'Catch' and 'Coach'. Only Brooke and Robbie took 'Catch', wading into Manila Bay to transport three hundred pounds-worth of fish through the water and to buckets waiting for them with their fishmonger judges.

The other teams finished 'Coach' in which they had to properly assemble sidecars, attaching them to motorcycles to receive their next clue. Ultimately, Brooke and Robbie finished their task faster, brute forcing the physical challenge.
10. The race's final Detour featured an even split between teams completing 'This' and teams completing 'That'.

Answer: True

The race's final Detour, found in Leg 11, was not unlike Leg 8's Detour (back in Malta) which saw teams choosing between two options with no insight into their actual tasks until they arrived onsite. In 'This', Adam and Bethany and Brooke and Robbie played basketball with locals in Manila, Philippines, shooting hoops to score 21 against local players.

In 'That', Amy and Maya and Misti and Jim raced padyaks around the Manila streets, taking turns completing four laps in under 17 minutes, 55 seconds.
