Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Homer buys his lottery tickets, how much is the jackpot?

Answer: $130,000,000

An ad for The State Lottery playing at Moe's Tavern gets Homer thinking of the possibilities of owning one hundred thirty million dollars and, soon, everyone in town has lottery fever, rushing to the Kwik-E-Mart to pick up their tickets. When Homer gets home that evening to inform Marge that he's planning on winning the lottery, she's clearly worried; they're already on a tight budget as it is.

They're so caught up in the conversation that they don't notice Santa's Little Helper struggling to walk across the room.
2. Who wins The State Lottery?

Answer: Kent Brockman

The night of the lottery finally comes up and Homer is more than confident that he'll win. When asked what he'll do with the winnings, he believes that he'll become the biggest man in the world and transform into 14-carat gold, becoming a king in the process.

The drawing finally comes up and, immediately, Homer loses out on the first number (17). Marge says he can still win with one less number, but he immediately loses out with the second drawing (3). within moments, the last numbers are called and Kent Brockman, broadcasting on the very lottery, reveals that he won the $130,000,000 prize.
3. Santa's Little Helper is diagnosed with which of these?

Answer: A twisted stomach

Marge tries to comfort the family after their lottery loss, claiming that at least they still have each other, but Grandpa informs the others that the dog seems to be dead. They find Santa's Little Helper in the kitchen, struggling to breathe, so they bring him to the Springfield Animal Hospital for a diagnosis.

The doctor, after a quick examination, tells the family that Santa's Little Helper has a twisted stomach, and the corrective surgery will set them back $750. Of course, this poses a problem.
4. According to Homer, which of these dogs was in Doggie Heaven?

Answer: Old Yeller

Homer, in an attempt to break the news easy to Bart, decides to talk to the kids about Doggie Heaven (where Old Yeller and a bunch of the Lassies went) and, subsequently, Doggie Hell (where Hitler's dog and another of the Lassies went). What it came down to, however, was that they couldn't afford Santa's Little Helper's operation, and he would likely die. Bart storms off, obviously angry with the decision, but when Homer looks at the dog's sad face, he decides there must be a better way.
5. Which of these cost-cutting measures does Marge *not* propose to save the family money?

Answer: Grandpa will have to live in a home

Homer decides, first and foremost, to speak to Mr. Burns about getting a bit of money but his boss immediately contacts security and has him hauled out. Soon, Homer ends up buying a book about canine surgery, but tosses it into the fire when he realizes the bad idea forming. Marge ultimately comes up with some solutions, reworking the budget to suit.

Unfortunately, it means they have to cut back on essentials. Homer has to give up beer for a bit, Bart has to get his hair cut at the barber college, Marge has to give up her weekly lottery ticket, and Lisa has to stop getting copies of "Encyclopedia Generica".

Instead of giving up beer, Homer says they should become a family of nomadic acrobats.
6. Is Santa's Little Helper's surgery a success?

Answer: Yes

While the family waits nervously in the waiting room, the veterinarian works his magic on Santa's Little Helper, bringing him back from the brink of death (and away from the doggie door at the Pearly Gates) by performing CPR. After the surgery is complete, Santa's Little Helper is in good shape and able to run to the family outside.

It only takes a couple of days to see the impact the money spent has on the family's day-to-day goings-on. Instead of pork chop night at the Simpson household, they're eating something called 'chub'.
7. Lisa, having cut costs by not buying a copy of "Encyclopedia Generica", is surprised when she's asked to write a report on who of these?

Answer: Copernicus

Watching the news after dinner, Marge discovers that her normal lottery numbers were the winners of the new $40,000 State Lottery jackpot; if it weren't for her cost cuts, she would've won. Immediately after, Maggie outgrows her baby clothes; they tear off her without provocation.

At school, Lisa is unprepared for her 2nd grade lesson on Copernicus, exactly the topic featured in "Encyclopedia Generica". At Moe's, Homer starts performing for money to buy beer. Bart gets a haircut at the barber college; it looks horrible.

It seems none of the family is in the mood to see the dog considering.
8. Who claims Santa's Little Helper from the pound?

Answer: Mr. Burns

One evening, Homer unintentionally leaves the gate to the back yard unlocked and Santa's Little Helper, feeling neglected, runs away to spare the family any more stress. The next morning, the whole family ends up yelling for the dog, but to no avail. Santa's Little Helper, fortunately, is on an adventure; he ends up crossing Springfield River on a log, fighting a bear in the forests, saving a family from a burning building in an adjacent county, and then getting caught by the dog pound. Across town, Mr. Burns releases the hounds on Ned Flanders but finds that one of his dogs, Crippler, is too old to keep chasing solicitors.

He heads to the pound.
9. In an attempt to spread the word of their missing dog, the Simpsons put up posters. Where does Homer post his?

Answer: On a building set for demolition

While the family puts Lost Dog posters up around Springfield, Mr. Burns goes to great lengths to train Santa's Little Helper into becoming an attack dog (including forcing him to watch a brainwashing film to turn him into a soulless, vicious killer. The family seems to be losing hope, and Homer fears the dog dead (even, negatively, deciding to claim that Doggie Heaven isn't real) but Bart decides not to give up.

He heads off to the rich side of town with more flyers.
10. Which Simpson ends up finding the missing Santa's Little Helper?

Answer: Bart

Bart reaches the Burns compound and, without thinking about it, Mr. Burns releases the hounds, setting Santa's Little Helper on his former owner and best friend. As the dog takes a flying leap at Bart, the reminder of their good times together softens the recently-hardened mutt, and the dog protects his real owner from the other vicious hounds so that they can leave together.
Safe at home, the Simpsons share some quality time petting the dog.
