Bart, sneaking through his parents' bedroom, nabs Homer's loose change jar just as Homer witnesses the theft. What follows is a race through the house and out the garage door where Bart catches the school bus and Homer, in his underwear, wield a rake and yells from the lawn. Bart sits down next to Milhouse on the bus and finds that his friend has purchased a Magic 8-Ball. Bart asks if he'll pass his English test and receives a sure-to-be-true answer, but when he asks if he and Milhouse will be friends by the time their old...and in high school...and at the end of the day, he only receives 'no' answers.

Homer and Bart get ready to head to the Springfield stop of Spinal Tap's world tour and Homer dons his old concert-going jacket (to find a can of Billy Beer in the pocket, which he promptly drinks). Marge is a bit worried that the concert might be too loud, but Homer assures her that he turned out fine after thousands of concerts of his own. He can't hear her response because of his tinnitus. After picking up Milhouse, they're on their way.

When Homer gets home that evening to inform Marge that he's planning on winning the lottery, she's clearly worried; they're already on a tight budget as it is. They're so caught up in the conversation that they don't notice Santa's Little Helper struggling to walk across the room.

Mrs. Krabappel fulfills her promise to the class for a special surprise. Unfortunately, the surprise is a new aptitude test, the Career Aptitude Normalizing Test, and every class in the school is being forced to take it to slot the children into prospective possible careers. The questions seem to be extremely specific (eg. 'Do you enjoy the smell of bank customers?'), so it quickly becomes apparent that the tests are pushing the kids in specific directions. When the tests are complete, armed guards collect the submissions and take them away.

Homer, indulging in a fresh box of doughtnuts at work, starts choking on his treats before Lenny points out that the annual company softball team tryouts has a sign-up list on the break room bulletin board. Assuring the guys that he has a secret weapon this year, Homer convinces the others to sign up with him. When he gets home, Homer shows Bart his secret, a homemade bat, and he plans to lead the power plant team to victory with it.

Bart is virtually nodding off in class as he and the other students are forced to sit through a projected movie about zinc and its myriad of uses in daily life. As it turns out, the kids really don't care that zinc is used to make car batteries, rotary telephone mechanisms, and the firing pin of a handgun. When the movie ends, the kids leave class as quick as possible, despite Mrs. Krabappel's suggestion that they stay, even if it means her doing their homework for them.

Homer walks into the living room to find Lisa dancing to something on TV and is promptly distracted by what's onscreen. During this time, Lisa asks him if she can have some money to buy Bart a birthday gift; he ends up handing over his entire wallet. An advertisement comes on the television as soon as she walks off, and Homer is enraptured with the idea of buying Bart a Superstar Celebrity Microphone solely because of the ad. That night, in bed, Homer tells Marge it'll be the boy's best birthday gift. He will buy his son's love yet!

Marge isn't too thrilled when Homer brings home Barnacle Bill's Home Pregnancy Test, obviously a lesser brand, though Homer's thrilled with the fact that it came with a free pipe. According to the test, 'if the water turns blue, a baby for you; if purple ye see, a baby thar be.' Unfortunately, the test turns pink, so Marge discovers that 'if the test should fail, to a doctor set sail.' She heads to Dr. Hibbert's office because her frequent nausea and cravings for pancake mix have started up, leading her to believe she may be pregnant, test or not.

The episode commences with Smithers washing Mr. Burns' hair. Unfortunately, Burns is not happy; he's a bit depressed with a number of missed opportunities in his life and he's contemplating selling the plant to be able to pursue the finer things in life (like wiping out countries with the stroke of a pen). Smithers accidentally lets the possibility leak out to Homer near a candy machine, but Homer doesn't really think too much about it. Shortly after, Homer gets a call from the stockbroker he never knew he had (apparently everyone in the plant gets stock if they waive some constitutional rights). As it turns out, stock in the power plant has gone up, and his shares are worth $0.25 each. He decides to sell to receive his $25 payout.

At home, watching 'I Can't Believe They Invented It!', Homer seems utterly convinced that Dr. Nick Riviera's new product, Spiffy, is worth buying, especially after he uses it to wipe the grime off Edgar Allan Poe's tombstone. ("Quoth the raven, what a shine!"). When the deal works itself down to four bottles, an applicator glove, and a State of Kansas Jell-o mold for $29.95, he can't resist...but is unable to call when Patty and Selma show up. Oh yeah, and during all of this, Bart keeps asking for power tools.

Lisa awakens Homer from a dream before she gets through to him; he was sleeping on the job. The reason is because she has a talent show that evening and she broke her last saxophone reed. She needs a new one, but she has already called Marge, Ned Flanders, Aunt Patty and Aunt Selma, Dr. Hibbert, Reverend Lovejoy, and the guy who got the snake out of their basement. Homer, happy that she chose him after all them, says he'll get her a 4 1/2 reed after work, just in time for the show.

In the beginning of this episode, like the last "Treehouse of Horror", Marge gives ample warning to the viewer but, decidedly, concedes when she realizes that viewers are going to watch regardless. This time around, Homer's at home watching television and eating from the house's bowl of Halloween candy. Unfortunately he ends up losing it all to older kids. Luckily, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are back from trick-or-treating and, despite Marge's urging that they'll all get nightmares if they eat candy before bed, they do anyways.

On the latest episode of Krusty the Clown, Krusty tosses axes at Sideshow Mel, accidentally hitting him in the head with the handle instead of striking the board behind him. Luckily, it's also the end of the show, so he sings the closing song and the cameras are turned off. Immediately heading backstage, Krusty takes his nicotine gum and proceeds to cancel everything on his agenda for the day including his dinner with Bart Simpson (planned since the helped put Sideshow Bob in jail, freeing Krusty from wrongful accusal).

Lisa is a bit surprised with Bart before the school bus picks them up because her brother has actually been a bit sentimental by picking a card for his best friend's birthday. When they get on the bus and Bart hands over a gift, a pair of Krusty the Clown walkie talkies they can keep on and talk through when they're not spending time, however, he's surprised that Milhouse has already had a party and Bart wasn't invited because his mother didn't want him to come along. Bart's so disappointed that he ends up staying on the bus without Otto noticing.

The sun rises on a new day in Springfield as Bart awakens to the sound of his Krusty the Clown alarm clock and promptly steps out of bed onto a dinosaur toy. Bart is thrilled nonetheless; his class is going on a field trip in the afternoon and all of his homework is done. When he searches for the prize in his box of Chocolate Frosted Krusty-Os (a Glow in the Dark Police Badge), he doesn't find it; Homer got to it first. That's the first bad thing to happen.

Ned finds Homer working on the lawn and, since the lawn mower is out of commission, Homer is using his neighbour's weed whacker to complete the entire job. Clearly this is taking a while. Nonetheless, Flanders invites the entire Simpson family over for a barbecue the next day, something that Homer is hesitant to accept because despite how nice their neighbour is, he believes Ned is a horrible jerk. Marge only makes the situation worse when she tells Homer to lay off the gibes toward Flanders just because their family has things a bit easier than their own. Homer opts to stay in while the others go along.

The episode begins with Lisa waking Bart up at 6:00am. The issue: Lisa is turning eight years old, a monumental age in her mind. She tells her brother that she's almost double-digits (a time, Bart says, which starts to take a toll on the body and the mind) and that he needs to get her a good gift to make up for the failed birthday attempts he's done for her in the past. He agrees that he will, much to her delight. Of course, the tides start shifting soon after.
