Nicholas was joining the Boy Scouts and Tom went with him for the first meeting. At this meeting, the leader tries to get one of the fathers to volunteer to be assistant scout master while Tom kept talking under his breath. Nicholas volunteered Tom for the job. The first task as assistant scout master: go on a backpacking trip into the woods.

Merle was called up to pitch for the Mets... in New York City. He left Susan back in Sacramento and promised to be home in time for the birth of their child. Merle was at Dodger Stadium when he got a phone call alerting him that Susan was in the hospital.

Elizabeth's boyfriend, Jack, suggested that because Elizabeth spent so much time with him, she should just move in. Elizabeth told her family she would be living with a friend (Marge) in the dorms, however. She told her father that she wanted to move closer to school to save gas money and time.

Tom tried to go with Elizabeth when she was moving in, but was able to convince him to visit another time. Tom and Nicholas did call the dorms to tell Elizabeth they would be stopping by. Marge called Elizabeth at Jack's apartment and Elizabeth ran to the dorms, convinced a guy to let her pretend his dorm was hers, took down the boy's posters and such, just in time for Tom and Nicholas to arrive.

All the other Bradfords had plans and Abby was left alone... with all the dirty dishes.

Susan had some twinges while practicing her lamaze. When she went to the doctor, the doctor was concerned but tried to tell Susan everything was all right. However, Susan was able to tell something was wrong and confided her fears to Abby.

Abby was driving Susan when Susan started talking about how she was worried something was wrong with the baby. Susan confided in Abby that her doctor even wanted her to have an ultrasound that afternoon. As Susan was talking, Abby got very concerned and didn't pay careful attention to driving. She ended up hitting another car and both Susan and Abby went to the hospital. Abby was fine and all of Susan's tests came back all right.

That night, Tom and Nicholas were out on their scouting trip and Susan had been convinced to stay at the Bradford house. During the night, Susan was in a lot of pain and cried out. She was taken to the hospital where she would later have her daughter.

Because the trip to the hospital was not long after the car accident, Abby blamed herself for Susan's condition and for the possibility she and/or the baby might die. Tom (and later, Merle) tried to convince her that she wasn't to blame and no one was blaming her.

Abby told Susan that she was jealous because Susan was having a baby. Susan asked if Abby wanted her own children. Abby mentioned she and Frank (her late husband) had planned on having children, but he died. And she may have had children, had she not married Tom, who already had eight of his own. Abby told Susan at the moment, she was just having fun with Susan's baby.

Abby and Mary stayed at the hospital once Susan was taken there. Mary stayed with Susan while Abby stayed in the waiting area/hall. David was out working near where Nicholas and Tom were camping, so Tommy called Janet (David's wife) who got a hold of David and got him to pick up Nicholas and Tom.

Tommy waited at the airport for Merle's flight to land, and then took him to the hospital.

Joanie went to pick up Elizabeth. However, as Elizabeth told everyone she was living at the dorms but was actually living with her boyfriend Jack, Joanie was the first Bradford to find out Elizabeth had lied to everyone.

Susan's baby was born premature and seemed to only have breathing difficulties. (At least that's all the Bradfords were told.) Dr. Maxwell, Mary, and Susan's doctor were able to determine that the bay's breathing difficulties cleared up and Susan and Merle were able to hold their baby.

While trying to move the canned goods so Susan would be better able to reach them, Abby told Merle that her real name was Sandra Sue. In the final scene of the episode, Susan and Merle say they named their daughter Sandy... Well, the full name was Sandra Sue - after Abby. Tommy claimed they only did that to ensure Abby would babysit. Tom volunteered to stay home with 'Granny'. Abby took offense to the name and threw a pillow at Tom.
