Nancy, Elizabeth, Tommy and Susan each bought equal shares in the car that they bought. However, the car barely ran. They had been told all the car needed was a new radiator, but David discovered everything needed to be fixed on the car. The worst problem was a cracked engine block. David mentioned that to fix that, the car would need a new engine.

Tommy had just received three F's in English. Tommy's teacher called Tom to tell him that Tommy had a D average and there was only one more chance for Tommy to bring up his grade. Tom had high expectations for Tommy, however, and demanded that Tommy get a C on this last chance composition.

Tom believed that his children should do well in English because he had brought them up to talk clearly and properly. In addition, Tom thought because he wrote for the newspaper, the children should do well in English. Tom's idea to raise Tommy's English grade was for him to tutor Tommy.

Answer: Abby

After hearing Tom yell at Tommy in an attempt to get Tommy's English grade up, Abby confronted Tom and told him that it would be a bad idea for Tom to tutor Tommy. She said that even though teaching was her profession, she wouldn't attempt to tutor her own family, just as a doctor wouldn't give medical advice to his/her own family. She offered to find Tommy a tutor, which Tom refused.

Abby also believed that maybe Tom was expecting too much of Tommy, that maybe Tommy wasn't capable of getting the high marks in English that Tom required.

Tom basically told Abby that he was right and that he didn't agree with Abby's argument at all.

Answer: Mary's

David suggested that Tommy talk to Mary because Mary helped David a great deal by suggesting topics when he was struggling. Mary happened to have saved all of her old papers, and had Tommy look through them to try to get some inspiration for a topic.

However, while Tommy was looking through the papers, Abby requested Mary's help with the oven timer and Tommy was left alone with the papers. When she returned to her room, Tommy said he had found a topic idea. But he really had hidden Mary's paper in his shirt. Tommy returned to his room to type up the paper as his own.

Tom asked to see the paper that Tommy had written. When Tom finished reading the paper, he remarked that it was very good, interesting, and contained ironies. Then he remarked that he thought it was good the first time he'd read it, and revealed that he knew it was a copy of a paper Mary had written. Tom knew it was Mary's because she'd mis-spelled ridiculous when she'd written it - an error that Tommy had copied. (Tom mentioned that Mary had thought ridiculous had an 'e' in it.)

Joanie told her sisters that she was asked to direct a play... an off campus play... an off-off campus play. So off campus that it was at the local elementary school that Nicholas attended. At first, her sisters were proud, especially as there were few women directors in theatre. But when they found out it was at the elementary school, Joanie was told that she set back women's rights.

Joanie asked Nicholas to play Prince Charming in the play.

Joanie enlisted Nicholas to be Prince Charming. She claimed that only two boys had tried out: one had a lisp and the other just stood there scratching himself.

Nicholas agreed to play the part - until he found out he had to kiss a girl (Snow White). Abby, Mary, and Joanie eventually convinced Nicholas to live up to his promise to Joanie.

Nicholas originally asked Joanie simply to clear the table for a month in return for his participation. When he found out he had to kiss a girl, he originally refused, but relented when Joanie promised to make his bed every day and to take out the garbage when it was his turn.

When Joanie asked Nicholas to kiss Snow White in rehearsal, Nicholas said he'd only contracted for the performance. Joanie then used Elizabeth to try to get Nicholas to practice the kiss at home.

Tommy put down $35 but was asked to pay $20 later for the paper. Tommy brought the paper home and when Tom read the paper, he liked it and told Tommy that he (Tom) knew Tommy was capable of this quality of work. Tommy was a bit depressed as he knew he was cheating and didn't deserve the praise, but didn't come clean.

After Tommy showed Tom the paper he'd paid for, Tommy went upstairs. Abby then checking in on Tommy in his room, saying that Tom had told her how proud he was of Tommy. Abby saw Tommy looking depressed and tried explaining why Tom acted the way he was toward Tommy. Abby explained that sometimes fathers and sons have trouble having relationships and that Tom loved Tommy. Abby continued, explaining that Tom really only wanted his children to have the best of everything, but didn't understand that maybe his way wasn't the only way.

As each of the children bought equal shares, they promised not to go in order of age. Nancy, Elizabeth, and Susan eventually settled on a credits system whereby each person got 1,000 credits a month that they could use to bid on when they could use the car. (Highest bid won the car.)

David then had to break the news to them that the car wasn't going to be able to be fixed.

In the end, the children decided to tow the car to the dump. If they brought the car in themselves, they would receive $20 for the car. If they were to have the car towed, it would cost them $20.

After reading the composition Tommy had paid for, Tom promised Tommy that they would go to a Warriors game that Saturday night. This made Tommy feel even worse as he knew he hadn't actually written the paper.

Tommy had come home from school and Abby talked him into showing her his composition that he'd stayed after school to have graded. Abby then took Tom into his study and read him the composition. Tommy wrote on how it was hard to have someone expect something of you, when you weren't what was expected.

He also mentioned that he still respected his father even when his father wasn't what he (Tommy) expected. Although Tommy had mixed up a couple of phrases (one of which was worth a deduction of 3 points), he received a B for the content of the composition and a D for grammar.

This averaged to a C, which is what Tom had set for the minimum grade acceptable.

Tommy was writing about his summer vacation when he was 12 years old in Oregon. Tom was trying to figure out which vacation, then realised it was the one where Elizabeth had the measles. Tom added that he hated that vacation. It turns out, so did Tommy, but he just couldn't think of anything to write.
