The kids thought they were getting a pool, but the announcement actually was that Tom had won California's version of the Pulitzer Prizer for altruistic column. Tom told Abby to pack her bags for San Francisco. The kids were less-than-thrilled as there wasn't really much in it for them.

When Tom tried to check in at the hotel, he was upset to find out there were only two rooms - and a convention in town. he eventually found a hotel across town that had an extra room for the boys. The only problem was that hotel was in poor condition. Tom instructed the boys to sleep with the lights on to keep away the roaches.

The two rooms Tom received at the first hotel were huge - so everyone could have fit there, but I guess the writer's needed a quick story to show Abby and Tom even further separated on this trip.

Susan had a test that her professor wouldn't reschedule. Tom bought her a plane ticket so she'd arrive in San Francisco a day late, but she'd still be able to go on the trip.

When everyone had looked through all the rooms, they accused Tom of being a platoon leader. That made Tom say he quit as father/platoon leader.
