Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How much money did David owe his coworker?

Answer: $327

David played poker with some coworkers and ended up losing $327. We learn he wrote a check to cover the loss and his coworker was going to cash it on Monday. His coworkers also mentioned that they'd had another guy play with them before. This other person wrote a bad check and eventually had to leave town.
2. Who did Tom come home to find sleeping in a car outside the Bradford house?

Answer: Dr. Maxwell

Dr. Maxwell had had a fight with his wife and went to the Bradford house. When Tom found him in his car, he was drunk. Tom brought Dr. Maxwell into the house to find out what happened. Dr. Maxwell said that his wife, Daisy, threw him out of the house. All the while, Dr. Maxwell keeps trying to get a drink and Tom keeps trying to keep the alcohol away from him.

Tom eventually brings Dr. Maxwell up to Tom's room so Dr. Maxwell can sleep off the alcohol.

Abby didn't show up on the series until the next episode ("Trial Marriage").
3. Who first saw Tom in bed with another person?

Answer: Nicholas

Nicholas peeked into his father's room and saw clothes all over the floor - and someone else in his father's bed. Nicholas went down to the kitchen, where he found the rest of the children. When they heard that their father had brought another person into the house - and into his bed - they all ran upstairs to see what was going on. (Although a couple of the children believed their father wouldn't do such a thing.)

The children pushed to look into the room and fell into the room - to see Dr. Maxwell was their father's guest. Dr. Maxwell then mentioned what a nice friend Tom was - and that Tom had even told Dr. Maxwell he could stay as long as he liked. (Tom claimed not to have invited him past the one night - at least he didn't *remember* inviting him...)
4. Who did David ask to cover his gambling debt?

Answer: Mary

David asked Mary to help him out. All Mary could offer was $40 of her book money - a long way off the $327 David owed. David asked Mary not mention his debt to the family as he didn't want anyone involved. After all, David made a big production about being 'on his own' and it wouldn't be right if he came home only to ask for help.
5. How did the family get out of eating Dr. Maxwell's breakfast?

Answer: Tommy had him paged so he would leave the table

Dr. Maxwell claimed that what he made was very healthy - there was even no sweetener in the food! He even told Susan that she would like it the most - as she was a health nut.

But no one liked the food. Susan tried to make it palatable by putting Dr. Maxwell's concoction between two pieces of bread... But it didn't help.

Tommy excused himself, went into the foyer, and called Dr. Maxwell's answering service. Dr. Maxwell's pager then went off and he left the kitchen to take the phone call in the foyer. While he was gone, the Bradfords emptied their plates into the garbage disposal. When Dr. Maxwell came back, he remarked that everyone must have loved his food as they all had clean plates. The Bradfords refused Dr. Maxwell's offer of seconds.
6. What did Dr. Maxwell have a 'fetish' about?

Answer: ice cubes

In this episode, we find out Dr. Maxwell really is an odd duck. He claims that he has to have this specific vanilla ice cream each night. (This ice cream is sweetened with honey, among other things...) He also claims that he dislikes the Bradford habit of keeping ice in a bucket in the fridge - Dr. Maxwell believes that ice is better fresh from the freezer.

At the bar, the waitress claims Dr. Maxwell has an ice cube fetish. One of the women on the double date and Daisy say the same thing.

As for the ice cream - the children decided to eat it to try and get Dr. Maxwell to go home after they discovered he'd bought the large size of everything needed to make his special breakfast (the one no one liked). When Dr. Maxwell looked for the ice cream, Elizabeth only remarked that someone must have eaten it.
7. What wakes Tom up on Saturday morning?

Answer: Dr. Maxwell exercising

Dr. Maxwell woke up at 6 and exercised. He apparently rode a bike 7 miles, then would do other exercises such as sit-ups. Dr. Maxwell was 6.8 miles into his 7 mile bike ride when Tom woke up. Tom complained that it was 7AM on a Saturday. And this was after the pair had gone out to a disco the previous night.
8. Where did Tom and Dr. Maxwell claim to be going to when they actually went to the disco?

Answer: bowling

Dr. Maxwell made Tom dress up to have some 'va-va-va-voom' in order to help attract women. When they get ready to leave, Susan claims that Tom is finally wearing her Christmas gift to him (a very polyester leisure suit).

By the way, none of the children believed the men were actually going to a disco.
9. About how much money were the Bradford kids able to come up with toward David's debt?

Answer: $80

Mary went against David's wishes and told the rest of the Bradford children about David's predicament. They all came up with various amounts - even Nicholas was able to provide a little money. The kids only came up with a little more than $80. David mentioned he'd even hocked his watch (which Tom had given him and cost at least $100) for a mere $15. That's when Susan got the idea to sell some of the family's old stuff - such as basketballs, skiing equipment, tennis equipment, and even Nancy's hair dryer. (When caught with the objects by Tom, the children claimed they were off to the park for some exercise.)

However, this only resulted in an additional $35.
10. What convinced Dr. Maxwell to go home?

Answer: Note he found in Mary's book

Mary and Joanie went to speak to Daisy about how to get Dr. Maxwell to go home. Daisy ended up writing a little note with tips on how to survive with a 'doctor' in the house. Mary ended up hiding the note that Dr. Maxwell's wife had written in one of her textbooks. Dr. Maxwell found the note and it convinced him that his wife really cared for him.
11. Where did Tom and Dr. Maxwell bump into Daisy?

Answer: golf course

Tom and Dr. Maxwell went to the golf course for Dr. Maxwell's noon tee-time. Tom was worried that they wouldn't be able to just walk up and get a tee-time, but Dr. Maxwell claimed to have had a standing reservation for years. The pair arrived just in time to hear Dr. Maxwell's name called to be next at the tee. When Tom and Dr. Maxwell arrived at the tee, they found Daisy and a friend of Daisy's already teeing off.

Daisy was as upset as Dr. Maxwell had been to see each other. In the end, Tom and Dr. Maxwell left.
12. Who planted flowers with Tom?

Answer: Nicholas

Tom was planting with Nicholas. Tom claimed to be only planting flowers to get away from Dr. Maxwell - that's why Nicholas hadn't seen him plant before. In this scene, Nicholas remarks that life is funny: He didn't want his mom to go away, but she did. And he didn't want Dr. Maxwell to come, but he did.

This is the first episode where the show admits that Joan had died.
13. Where did Mary hide the money collected for David?

Answer: In Tom's desk drawer

Mary had hidden the money the Bradford children collected for David in a book hidden in Tom's top right desk drawer. This is where she admits to David that she had told the rest of the children about David's gambling debt.
14. While on a double date, what did one of the women claim Tom was?

Answer: manic-depressive

Tom and Dr. Maxwell ended up going to an apartment to meet two women Dr. Maxwell's mechanic had suggested. The two couples really had nothing to talk about - there were more awkward pauses than conversation. The women excused themselves and tried to decide what to do.

It was only 8 o'clock at night, so they had the whole evening to fill and didn't want to waste the evening. While trying to divvy up which woman got which man, the brunette decided to take the one with the 'ice cube fetish' (Dr. Maxwell), leaving the red-head with the 'manic-depressive' (Tom).
15. Was Tom extremely upset that David hadn't come to him first?

Answer: no

Tom saw David and Tommy sitting out front. Tom tossed Tommy a basketball and suggested Tommy needed to practice (in other words, Tom wanted Tommy to leave him and David alone). Tom asked David why he'd seen so much of his son, and David told him about having lost money playing poker and that he didn't have enough to cover the check he'd written. Tom was a little concerned, but only suggested that David should have come to him first. Tom agreed to loan David the remainder of the funds. Tom also asked David if it was time for David to be told the tips that Tom's own father had told him. For example, if you are dealt three cards that are different, put them back.

This does contradict a future episode where we find out Tom's father had abandoned the family when Tom was young.
