Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of office was being opened at the local college?

Answer: ROTC

Mary was upset that the college was allowing an ROTC office on campus. She believed it was the government's war machine trying to raise the next soldiers for the next 'futile' war. Abby was doling out chores when Mary came home with news of the office's opening.

When Abby didn't summon enough emotion against the ROTC, Mary confronted her. Abby seemed to be neutral on the subject. (After all, her first husband had died in Vietnam.) In the end, Mary confessed to Richard (the son of Tom's friend) that she was so anti-ROTC because her high school friend had died as the Americans were pulling out of Vietnam.
2. Richard is the son of Abby's friend.

Answer: false

Richard was Tom's old war buddy's son. Richard had been given strict instructions to call Tom the minute Richard arrived in town.
3. Who was rude when Richard first came to visit?

Answer: Mary

Mary and the rest of the family got along well with Richard when he first came to the house. However, that was not to last. When Mary found out Richard was in town because he was a captain in the Army and was sent to set-up the college's ROTC office, Mary was rude and stormed off.

Tom was very upset that Mary had been so rude to a guest of his in his own house. Tom even went to Richard's office to apologise to him about Mary's behaviour (and to find any clues that Richard and Mary were seeing one another).
4. Who claimed he/she was in charge of inspections for the cleaning?

Answer: Abby

Abby was giving everyone chores to get the house clean and handed out chores to everyone but herself. When asked what she was in charge of, Abby replied she was in charge of inspections.
5. Why did Abby want the house to be cleaned up?

Answer: So the family could hire a maid

Abby decided that the house was a mess (the children agreed with that) and the family should hire a maid. Abby believed the family should clean the house before hiring a maid so the maid wouldn't be scared off the job on the first day. So that's why she wanted the house clean *before* someone came to clean the house.
6. Who was the first person Tommy approached about taking over his/her chore?

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth was complaining that the bathroom was gross and she didn't want to clean it. Tommy decided to turn this into an opportunity. He told Elizabeth he'd take care of her chore if she paid him.
7. Who believed Mary and Richard were dating, and had a problem with that?

Answer: Tom

Richard was black. Although Richard was the son of Tom's close friend, Tom confided to Abby that he hoped Mary wasn't dating him as it would be 'difficult'. Although Tom never came out and specifically said it, he didn't want Mary dating a black man.

When Tom told Abby his feelings, she couldn't really believe him, but mitigated the problem by mentioning Mary and Richard may not even be an item.

In the end, Tom was wrong. Mary and Richard were never romantically involved with each other - they were simply friends who could agree to disagree. And besides, Richard had a girl in Berkeley. He kept telling Tom he couldn't stay for dinner as he was going up to Berkeley to see the girl. They would announce their engagement after she graduated.
8. What cleaning job do we see Abby do in this episode?

Answer: lining kitchen drawers

Joanie and Nancy were cleaning one of the girls' rooms and Joanie found an ashtray full of old cigarettes under Nancy's bed. Nancy claimed she had gone through a phase.

We see Tom dusting his study.

Abby was lining the kitchen drawers. When asked why, she said because she didn't trust the rest of the family and thought something was up. Abby said she never saw anyone cleaning and when she asked how the cleaning was coming along, she only got answers of 'great, fine'. Abby didn't know at the time, but everyone had paid Tommy so they wouldn't have to do their chores.
9. How much money had Tommy collected from the family?

Answer: $30

Tommy claimed to have collected $30 from the family to do their chores. However, Tommy (being an entrepreneur) decided to use $20 of the funds to hire a maid to do all the chores Abby had originally tasked the family to do.

Tommy then goes down to a maid service place with his Spanish dictionary. He didn't need it as the woman at the desk knew English better than Tommy, having been educated there. Tommy hired a maid for the family. But when the maid arrived, she saw how many people lived in the house (and actually, she didn't even see everyone), said the job was impossible and left before doing any work.
10. Nicholas has a bully problem in this episode. How does he ultimately take care of the bully?

Answer: gets him alone

We don't know why Maloney had a problem with Nicholas, but Nicholas was afraid of him. Nicholas was saved from the bully at one point by Tommy arriving to walk Nicholas home from school. At another point, David goes to Nicholas's school bringing him a banana - and some advice. David claimed that bullies thrived on attention, so if you got the bully alone, they wouldn't be a problem.

Nicholas is told that Tom has always said if anyone of his children have a problem, to come to Tom. Nicholas is also advised that if all else failed, put your head down and hit with the left...

Nicholas at one point even asked Richard for help with his bully problem. Richard told Nicholas that soldiers are even trained to not fight unless absolutely necessary. He then asked Nicholas if Nicholas still wanted to learn how to break someone's bones, but Nicholas didn't want to learn anymore.

Nicholas was walking home from school and was able to get the bully alone. He and the bully just stared at each other until (saved by the Bradford) Tom showed up asking if Nicholas wanted a ride home. Nicholas eyes the bully and said he didn't.

One night, Nicholas asked what was for dinner. Abby replied pot luck. Then Nicholas asked if he could spend the night at a friend's house. At Maloney's house, to be exact. Nicholas and Maloney seemed to get on, or was Nicholas only using Maloney for a dinner of spare ribs instead?
