Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Graduates" - Where did Tom go in order to write the commencement speech?

Answer: Under a tree

Tom had been writing the speech for Elizabeth's high school commencement, but found he needed some inspiration. (Apparently there was too much noise and too little inspiration at his office and at home.) Mary told Abby in this episode that Tom had gotten up early and said something about going to sit under a tree by the Sacramento River. Abby hadn't heard him go to bed as he worked so late and he got up before she did.
2. "Triangles" - Who worked the garage sale?

Answer: Tommy, Mary, and Elizabeth

Nicholas spent the episode being smothered by Tom, so he didn't have time to help with the garage sale.

David spent the episode trying to solve the problem with his roommate dating Joanie and Susan.

Nancy spent the episode... well, not doing much.

Mary and Elizabeth were the 'junior partners' in the garage sale with Tommy. Mary had found a lot of stuff in the Bradford attic and Tommy decided it was a business opportunity. Tommy tried to sell Elizabeth's old ballet slippers, but she refused to sell them. Abby donated some things, but didn't really help out with the garage sale. (She did come to buy something, as she had promised Tommy.)

The trio only earned $83.65 from the garage sale, and Tommy deducted almost $53 in 'overhead'. Then, Tommy decided the 'front office' (aka Tommy) had a 67% share of the 'gross profit' of $30. So Tommy took $20 (plus the $53 he'd already deducted) and left Mary and Elizabeth with $5 each for their two days' worth of work.
3. What is Aunt V's nickname for Tom?

Answer: Tommy Bellybutton

This nickname annoys Tom although Vivian uses it with affection.
4. "The Bard and the Bod" - Was Abby Catholic?

Answer: No

When Abby found out Joanie's play was the same night as when her father-in-law was coming to town, Abby left Mary's room claiming she was off to confession. Mary replied that she didn't know Abby was... Abby quickly replied she wasn't.
5. "The Bard and the Bod" - What had Tom done during the war?

Answer: Wrote for 'Stars and Stripes'

Abby's father-in-law, Walter, asked what Tom had done during the war (which war wasn't specified). Tom replied that he wrote for 'Stars and Stripes'. Walter understood, saying Tom worked at 'building up the generals'.
6. "Great Expectations" - In the end, did Nicholas kiss Snow White?

Answer: Yes

Joanie was all worried that he wouldn't kiss Snow White. She claimed that the play shouldn't have suspense. (Would Nicholas kiss Snow White?) In the end, Nicholas kissed Snow White - twice. Then the girl playing Snow White said 'yuck' and wiped the kiss off her face.
7. "The Bard and the Bod" - Where was Tom sent during the war?

Answer: Tennessee

We never find out what war Walter and Tom talked about. Given Tom's age, it would be possible for him to have served in either Korea or WWII.
8. "I Quit" - What was not a reason given for going to San Francisco?

Answer: visit family

Joanie was having trouble playing the scene of Anne Boleyn's death. She argued that she should be able to accompany Tom and Abby in their trip to San Francisco so she could see how a professional actress handled the scene.

Mary argued she should be able to go so she could visit the medical school she anticipated attending in the fall.

Nicholas and Tommy wanted to go so they could see trains.
9. "I Quit" - Where did Tom find his speech?

Answer: Suit pocket

Tom won an award for altruism and took the family to San Francisco. He really laboured over the speech, but when it came time to get ready to go to the awards ceremony, he couldn't find the speech. He dragged all the kids back to the hotel (after picking them up all over the city) and made them all look for the speech. He also blamed everyone for the speech being missing.

In the end, he spoke extemporaneously (Tom was so flustered he couldn't even say 'extemporaneously' before the ceremony) about how oftentimes you don't get any reward for being altruistic - you get your hands slapped or called a platoon leader. He continued that the best reward wasn't a plaque or something you could take to the bank, but seeing someone you helped help themselves. After the awards ceremony, he put his hand in his suit jacket pocket to get his wallet... and found the speech. Tom claimed it wasn't very good anyway, it had been over-written.
10. Who is Dr. Maxwell's first name?

Answer: Gregory

In several episodes, people refer to him as Greg. However, Tom has also referred to him as "Max."
