Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Long Night's Journey Into Day" - How did Susan try to comfort Tom when he was worried?

Answer: suggested he could be waiting for a baby to be born

Susan and Tom were sitting on the bench outside the master bedroom when Tom confided that he was quite worried about Abby. Susan tried to comfort him by saying things could be worse - he could be having a baby.

In a future episode, "Oh No...Not Again! (aka Here We Go Again)" in season 3, Abby thinks she may be pregnant.
2. "Dear Ms. Dinah" - What was Tom's advice (in the column) regarding the water shortage?

Answer: share the bath with someone

In the last scene of the episode, the family is reading Tom's efforts as 'Ms. Dinah' in the kitchen. One letter was about how the author was worried about the water shortage. Tom's suggestion was to look at the bath half full, instead of half empty, and share a bath with someone.
3. Nicholas was looking for Abby because he had a history question from breakfast. Who was the person that was being discussed at the breakfast table?

Answer: John Quincy Adams

We never did find out what the discussion was about. Nicholas was looking for Abby, but because she wasn't around, Tom offered to answer Nicholas's question. But Nicholas only confused Tom in a 'Who's on First'-esque discussion. Eventually, Abby mentions to Tom that she'd looked up the answer and it was John Quincy Adams.
4. "Pieces of Eight" - Joan talked with Joanie about Tom having been out of work in the past. How long was he out of work for?

Answer: 3 months

At the time, Tom had been working for a magazine which went bankrupt. Joan said that she felt helpless at the time as Joanie was just a baby and she was very pregnant with Susan at the time, so Joan wasn't really able to go out and get work. Tom was able to find another job in about three months, Joan said, and they got through it by cutting back expenses and borrowing some money from Joanie's grandparents. (It was implied these were Joan's parents as Tom was apparently very happy when the family was able to pay them back.)
5. Which Bradford flunked out of college?

Answer: Nancy

Mary thought she was going to flunk out, but the family helped her study and she passed her anatomy class. David didn't flunk - he quit - and, according to Tom, was doing well in college. Nancy flunked out and resisted Tom's help to get back into school. She eventually sets out looking for work.
6. Who told Abby she needed to share her car with the rest of the family?

Answer: Tom

Susan found a guy who was interested in her - well, only because she was in Abby's car. So she convinced the other Bradford children to talk to Tom to get Abby to share the car. Abby resisted but then realized if she made the rules for getting her car hard, maybe no one would drive it after all. Susan was the only Bradford to sit through Abby's "How to Drive My Car" course and took the car out for a date - where it got stolen. (Don't worry, the police found it a couple blocks away!)
7. Whose friend died and left him or her a motorcycle?

Answer: David's

David's coworker died at work. He was young and David was devastated. When his coworker's mom refused to take his friend's motorcycle back and David was forced to keep it. Between the grief and the uppers another coworker gave him, David went a little crazy - riding without a helmet, being mean to his family, growing a beard, etc. Eventually (well, after he almost died in a motorcycle crash) he realized what he was doing was wrong and went back to the old David.
8. When Nancy runs a daycare, which Bradford is the best taking care of the children?

Answer: Susan

Nicholas hated 'the shrimps', as he called them, and Nancy kept making him take the kids to the bathroom all the time. Abby stayed out of it and Mary was too busy trying to study. But Susan had the children all quieted down and worked very well with them. She ended up 'buying' Nancy out of the daycare business, then found an established daycare to take the children and that had a job for herself (part-time, of course). Susan then announced she was changing her college major to education.

Susan never really showed she liked or was good with children in past episodes. However, in a previous episode when the family thinks Nicholas bought a painting worth a lot of money, Susan mentioned she'd spend her share on buying a daycare - which also sounded odd to me at the time.
9. When Tommy was learning to drive, what did he do that drove his siblings crazy?

Answer: Made them sit on the floor when passing 'cool' kids

Tommy kept offering to drive people around, but every time he'd pass the burger joint where all the cool kids hung out, he'd have his siblings crouch down on the floor of the car so they would think Tommy was alone in the car. Tommy eventually got pulled over because he didn't have a licensed driver in the car with him (he did - but Nancy was on the floor of the car!).
10. What animal gave birth in Tom and Abby's closet?

Answer: Cat

Nicholas 'rescued' a cat and was actually allowed to keep it. But when Cat (Nicholas named her) turned out to be pregnant, the whole family tried waiting up for the delivery. In the end, only Mary, Abby and Tom were able to stay up all night to see Cat give birth to her kittens. Nicholas gave people IOUs for kittens.

At the end of the episode, Nicholas found (and saved?) a dog and asked for permission to keep the dog as well.
