Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sport were the two families playing at the start of the episode?

Answer: Football

The Maxwells and Bradfords are playing football against each other in the park. Nicholas gets to call the coin toss. He picks heads.
2. What shirt did Elizabeth put on after her mother told her she had to wear a bra?

Answer: Washington Redskins jersey

Elizabeth was wearing a tight t-shirt when her mother, Joan, told Elizabeth she had to wear a bra. Elizabeth then asked her dad if the young women at his work wore bras. Tom, knowing better, said he didn't look at such things. Elizabeth ultimately compromised with her mother and wore a Washington Redskins jersey.
3. Elizabeth was charged with a felony.

Answer: true

Elizabeth was riding in a car with a boy when a motorcycle cop pulled them over. The boy started to try to hide his drugs and the cop believed Elizabeth was helping him hide the drugs under the seat. Tom asked an officer what she could go away for and was told 6 months to a year.
4. The lawyer the Bradfords hired to get Elizabeth's charges lessened was from where?

Answer: Los Angeles

The attorney was charging $1,500 to get Elizabeth's charges lessened if she would testify against the driver of the car. The lawyer flew up to Sacramento, did his work and flew back without even meeting the Bradfords.
5. What kind of operation did Nicholas have in this episode?

Answer: tonsillectomy

Nicholas' operation was going to cost $100. The doctor who performed the operation was Dr. Himmler - he told Nicholas that Nicholas would get fewer colds and infections once his tonsils were removed.
6. Which child was upset with Tom and Joan hiring an attorney for Elizabeth?

Answer: David

David believed it was wrong to make Elizabeth testify against her friend. Some of the other children believed as David did, but Elizabeth was fine with having an attorney.
7. Why did the children gather in Tom and Joan's bedroom?

Answer: find out who got David's room

Tom was watching slides in his bedroom when all of the children (except David) came to ask Tom a question. He thought they had gathered to ask him to apologize to David for the fight he and David had, and launched into a tirade about how he was the father and wouldn't apologize. The children sat through the tirade then told him he should wait for the question before giving an answer.
8. What did Joan hire an architect to design?

Answer: bedroom addition

Joan had hired an architect to design a larger master bedroom. However, she hadn't told Tom and the plans would cost $575. Tom only found out about the plans when the couple ran into the architect at the hospital. (The architect's son had leukemia, which Tom only found out about when he went to the architect's house to ask if he could pay the fee over time.) Enlarging the bedroom seems a bit odd to me as the bedroom was already quite large - it had a sitting area, make-up area and its own bathroom already.
9. Who joined the football game at the end of the episode?

Answer: David

David, by now, was living in his own apartment and apparently wasn't expected to turn up at the game. In his place his mother, Joan, played. David came to the game just as it was starting, then got Tom to change who did what for the upcoming play.
10. What is the phrase "Never try eating nectarines since juice may dispense" used to help Tom remember?

Answer: the names of the children

The Maxwells wondered how the Bradfords would remember the names of the children. After the football game, most of the Bradford children went out and the Bradford parents were left with silence. The Maxwells remarked the the silence was great - until one got used to it. (The Maxwells' two eldest children had moved out.)
