This begs the question: How did Abby become known as Abby? It's not a typical nickname for Sandra and she wasn't Abbott until she was married, so it couldn't come from that.

Tom decided to have a party to celebrate Tommy's cast being taken off. Dr. Maxwell even borrowed a saw from a doctor friend to take the cast off at the party. While the kids were planning the party, Tom tells them not to spare any expense - as long as the party didn't cost more than $5. The kids invite a lot of people - including Abby.

At the party, Tommy pretends to fall down the stairs after his cast was removed. Mary and her boyfriend arrive a little late. Mary claims the pair had stayed up all night talking, and decided that their trial marriage didn't work out. Mary told Tom that they each needed to know themselves before living together.

After the party, Tom walked Abby out. With the kids watching in the living room, he asked her out to dinner. But Abby already had a date.
