Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did David have a roommate in this episode?

Answer: He was on strike and wasn't working

David wasn't working as he was joining another union in striking. As they weren't earning money, David's coworker Greg moved in together to share expenses. Joanie was the first one to meet the roommate and originally thought Greg was a thief because David didn't believe in roommates of the opposite sex.

Joanie thought Greg was cute and invited him to dinner.
2. Who didn't appear to be falling all over Greg when he came for dinner?

Answer: Elizabeth

Nancy put on a yellow tube top and yellow kerchief when she found out David was bringing a male roommate to dinner. Susan came in from playing tennis and ended up going outside to hit a few balls with him. Joanie put on a special top and was extremely jealous when she heard Greg was outside with Susan.

Elizabeth didn't appear to do anything special.

Abby had arrived for a date with Tom and watched with David as the girls ran all over the house looking for Greg.
3. Why did Tom have trouble driving Abby's car?

Answer: It was manual transmission

Tom had accidentally promised the two cars the night he was supposed to go on a date with Abby. The children finally convinced him that it wouldn't be so awful if Abby came to pick him up. Tom refused to be so liberal as to let Abby drive. However, he opened up what he thought was the passenger's door and realised that the car was British and he'd opened the driver's side door. Abby tried making the car seem easy to drive, but Tom apparently wasn't very good at driving it.

At dinner, Abby toasted the valet guy for parking the car.
4. What was one reason Tom gave for why he was neglecting Nicholas?

Answer: Nicholas didn't know how to swim

Nicholas had been invited to the shore but Tom didn't let him go because Tom realised he'd never taught Nicholas to swim. Tom also felt bad because Mary discovered Nicholas only had a couple of photos of him as a baby - the rest of the children at least had baby albums.

Tom ends up picking up Nicholas from school to rectify Nicholas's lack of swimming abilities. When Nicholas asks how they can go swimming without bathing suits, Tom explains that he taught David and Tommy naked as it was better without the swimsuit weighing you down.

Nicholas and Tom go to the YMCA and get ready to go swimming... but it turns out Tom didn't read the schedule and they arrived to swim on co-ed swimming day.
5. What did Elizabeth not allow Tommy to sell at the garage sale?

Answer: her ballet shoes

Elizabeth's first pair of ballet shoes were pretty...old and used. Tommy was trying to sell them as a 'desperation sale', but she wouldn't part with them. (Unless, that is, Tommy sold his baseball cards.)
6. Who tried to mediate in the Elizabeth v. Tommy dispute?

Answer: Mary

Elizabeth was upset at Tommy because he wasn't giving her much of a share in the garage sale profit. he was also upset at him because he was trying to sell her ballet shoes. Tommy was upset because he wanted the most money from the garage sale. Mary tried to mediate in the dispute. Consequently, neither Tommy nor Elizabeth were talking to Mary.
7. What did Abby 'suggest' Tom and Nicholas do together?

Answer: fly a kite

Tom was calling to cancel a date with her so he could (again) spend time with Nicholas. Abby apparently suggested to go fly a kite as Tom responded that flying a kite was a great idea. In a later scene, Tom is seen flying the kite (well, more like getting it stuck in a tree) while Nicholas watches kids play baseball nearby.
8. Who ended up sleeping in a tent in the backyard?

Answer: Susan

Susan and Joanie were both trying to get Greg's attentions and ended up in a big fight. Tommy was ready to sell the tent at the garage sale and didn't want Susan to use it as then the tent would be 'used' instead of 'never slept in.' Susan ended up in the tent, sleeping on a sprinkler head, in the cold.

In the end, Susan and Joanie decided Greg wasn't worth it. They showed up at David's apartment (where Greg was living) and pretended they were cool with him being with both of them. But then the doorbell rang - and in came in Mary, Elizabeth and Nancy. Greg got the idea.
9. What did Nicholas want to be doing instead of spending time with his dad?

Answer: playing baseball

Nicolas found out his friend was going to have a girl play for Nicholas when Nicholas was spending time with his father. Nicholas got upset that a girl who wore glasses would be playing instead of him and eventually was able to tell his dad about his feelings.
10. How did Tom find out about the fights that were going on in the Bradford house?

Answer: Abby told him

Abby told him that everyone was fighting - Tom didn't realize things had gotten so bad at home while he was devoting all his energy toward Nicholas. Abby then told Tom that she saw his life divided up into eight pieces and didn't see how he could carve out an additional slice for her.

Abby came to support the kids in their garage sale and told Tom she needed time to think about their relationship.
