Richard meets his broker at the golf course, where he's told that stock he had purchased is now worthless, and he owes $20,000. The broker suggests he file bankruptcy, but Richard says he'll lose his job if he does that.

Laura, Karen and Val are at a dress shop, and Laura gives the saleslady a credit card to pay for her purchases. The saleslady tells Laura that the card is denied for being over the limit. Val offers to put Laura's purchases on her card, but Laura refuses, and says she'll wait and ask Richard about it.

Richard has planned a barbecue with steaks and lots of liquor for the neighbors. He says it's because Laura's father is visiting, but Laura is later appalled to find out that Richard threw the barbecue to ask their friends for money. Sid at first says no to Richard when asked, but later tells him that he'll loan $5,000.

Diana's boyfriend, Terry, picks Diana up on a motorcycle. They drive to a friend's garage, where Terry pays $100 for the new paint job on his car. Diana asks about the money, and Terry says he cashed in a savings bond from his grandmother.

Richard wants Laura to ask her father for money, but she tells him she can't, her father only has his house. Laura suggests that they sell their house and she get a job.

After Diana hears her parents discussing the missing $100 bill, she remembers that Terry paid for the paint job with a $100 bill. Diana asks Terry about it, but he says his father gave him the money. Diana knows he's lying, and tells her father. Terry later comes by the house to pay Sid the money back, and apologize to Diana.

Laura gives him the check, but points out that it's made out to her. He doesn't mind this, but Laura points out that she'll give it to him with certain conditions. She tells Richard that she'll handle their finances, and once she gets a job, everything she earns will go towards paying her father back. Richard won't agree because he says a man is supposed to take care of his family.

He tears the check in half, and leaves. Richard returns later and hands Laura a paper bag with Scotch tape in it. He tells her it's for the check.

Laura had given Richard the nightshirt a few days earlier, but he didn't think much of it. After Richard returns home, he agrees to the strings Laura has attached to his accepting the check from her father. When Richard removes his robe and gets into bed, Laura comments that he's wearing the nightshirt. Richard remarks that he might as well because Laura is wearing the pants in the family now.
