Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Everyone in the cul-de-sac is reading the newspaper about the latest in a string of rapes in the area. How many have there been?

Answer: 3

The latest rape occurred only three blocks from Seaview Circle in broad daylight. Karen, sitting in her kitchen with Sid and Diana, comments that it is the third rape in three weeks.
2. Where does Laura meet her rapist?

Answer: a cocktail lounge

Laura was feeling unappreciated by Richard, who is always criticizing everything she does, and went to a cocktail lounge in the afternoon. After buying her a drink, a man strikes up a conversation with Laura.
3. The rapist lures Laura to his apartment by saying he's an artist and wants to draw her portrait.

Answer: True

The man who buys Laura a drink tells her he's been waiting for her to come back there for a week. When Laura says he couldn't have gotten that good a look at her, he pulls out a sketch he had made of her. When she asks if she can keep it, he says only if she'll pose for another portrait. Once she's at his apartment, he initially begins sketching Laura, but then rapes her.
4. What does Karen get really upset with Diana about?

Answer: hitchhiking

Diana arrives home while Karen and Val are outside. Karen asks Diana who her friend is and gets very angry when Diana says it was nobody she knew, she hitched a ride. Diana, who's fifteen, doesn't realize the possible consequences of her actions until she later hears Karen, Ginger and Val talking about Laura being raped.
5. How does Val know that Laura's not telling the truth about when and where she was raped?

Answer: Val saw Laura arrive just before Richard

Val was outside watering her plants and sees Laura arrive home and run into her house. Moments later, Richard arrives home to pick up something for work and finds a disheveled and crying Laura, who lets him believe she had been raped at home. Later, when Val, Ginger and Karen are in the Avery's living room, Richard comes downstairs and tells them that Laura said it happened just before he arrived home. Val thinks about saying something to Richard about Laura having just arrived before he did, but decides not to.
6. What distinguishing feature does the man that Laura identifies as her rapist have?

Answer: scar

Laura and Richard were waiting at the police station when Mrs. Hines, the last rape victim, came out of the room from identifying her attacker. Laura hears her tell the lieutenant that she knew she couldn't forget that scar. So when Laura looks at the suspects and sees the man with the scar, she names him as her attacker (knowing that he's not).
7. As Richard, Laura and Val are leaving the police station, they see the man that Laura just identified as her rapist leaving. Why did the police let him go?

Answer: he had an alibi

Richard asks the lieutenant why the man is being let go if Laura just identified him. She tells them that the man was being held at the Long Beach police station from noon until 4pm the previous day while the police ran a warrants check on him. Since this was during the time Laura says she was raped, Lt. Larkin says he has an iron-clad alibi.

When Richard mentions that two other women identified him as well, the lieutenant says that if one victim was wrong, it casts doubt on the identification by the other victims as well.
8. Laura freaks out when she thinks she sees the man who raped her. Where is she when this happens?

Answer: at lunch with Karen and Val

Karen and Val take Laura out to lunch to try to cheer her up. They are making a toast when Laura sees the man who raped her. She drops her glass and says she has to leave, but as she walks past the man, she sees that it's not him. At Laura's house, Laura explains to Val that she dropped out of college after she married Richard to put him through law school, and it made her feel important.

But now sometimes she feels left out of Richard's life, gets lonely and ends up in situations like the one she found herself in. Val tells her that she knows that Laura has it in her to do the right thing.
9. Does Laura tell Richard the truth about the rape?

Answer: No

Richard calls Laura to tell her that Lt. Larkin phoned him to say the man Laura identified was caught perpetrating another crime and that he could be convicted without Laura having to testify. Laura calls the lieutenant and tells her the man with the scar wasn't the one. Lt. Larkin says she didn't think so, and Laura asks if they will still be looking for the other one (her rapist). Lt. Larkin, sensing that Laura isn't telling the full truth about her rape, asks, "Should we be?", to which Laura responds "No".
10. When Richard takes all of the neighbors to dinner, what does he do that makes everyone uncomfortable?

Answer: belittles Laura's menu choices

Everyone discusses what they are having for an appetizer, but when Laura says what she'd like to have, Richard disregards what she wants and tells the waiter what he thinks she should have. Then when he asks what she's having for her entree, he tells her she can't have the duck because it doesn't go with the type of wine he's ordered.

He then orders her lamb, and overlooks her comments when she says they just had lamb recently. Richard's disparaging remarks towards Laura leaves everyone feeling uncomfortable, and prompts Karen to deliberately order the duck and the onion soup because Richard said they wouldn't go together. Laura excuses herself and goes to the bar area to smoke a cigarette. Val watches as a man offers to light Laura's cigarette, and realizes that even though it got her into trouble, Laura will continue to seek attention from other men because of the way Richard treats her.
