Episode 5 - "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" Quiz

Val is out helping Ginger volunteer at a day care when Lilimae arrives by taxi. Karen introduces herself and invites Lilimae to wait at her house for Val. When Val and Ginger arrive home, Michael runs over to tell them there is a surprise for Val.

In Val's flashbacks, we see Lilimae leaving her husband and child to pursue her musical career, against the wishes of her husband, Jeremiah. When Val walks in and sees her mother, she's not too happy. She's a perfect hostess, but she doesn't trust her mother and even tells Gary that she hates Lilimae.

Val asks Laura if she sees her mother often. After telling Val that her mother died, Laura says that she was the youngest and that they were close. After Lilimae calls Val away, Laura remembers being at her mother's funeral and saying, "Mommy, please don't leave me".

Val couldn't sleep because of thinking about her mama, so she was up at 4am cooking apple and corn fritters. Gary, waking up and finding Val in the kitchen cooking, said, "Seems to me you're just frittering away the night."

Val wants to have everyone over to keep her mama occupied, and because everyone has had Val and Gary over. When Lilimae asks Val what she's going to serve, Lilimae tells her that these aren't country people and they wouldn't like the fritters. Lilimae and Val make a mousse, which even they don't think is any good.

At the party, Sid tastes his mousse and starts looking for a way to get rid of it. He sees Gary eating a fritter and Gary tells him that they're in the kitchen, but he needs to sneak one. On Sid's way to the kitchen, he sees Richard come out of the bathroom with his mousse glass. Richard tells Sid he hasn't had mousse that good since he was in the Army.

Ginger remembers her mother making her go to a clinic and have an abortion when she was sixteen. Ginger begins crying and tells a sleeping Kenny that she wants a baby.

Karen's memory of her mother consists of her mother questioning why she wants to get married to this Sid guy. Karen thinks about this after having Val, Gary and Lilimae over for dinner, and the next night after returning from Val's and hearing Val's confrontation with her mother. Karen and Diana share a warm moment and discuss how they don't want their relationship to turn out like Val and Lilimae's.

After Diana goes to bed, Karen remembers her mother's disapproval again, but then after the disapproval her mother says if she's going to marry Sid they better get planning. Karen smiles and then calls her mother.

The other things bothered Val too, but as she tells her mother, Lilimae turning her back on Val when she needed her the most was the worst thing. Val remembers that she had gone to Lilimae's with her baby because she was being pursued. Lilimae said her manager was inside and they were getting ready to leave on a tour.

She thought it would ruin her career if the manager found out that she was a grandmother.

Val apologizes to Lilimae for yelling at her in front of everyone. Lilimae explains that she didn't know that Val was in trouble. But Val says that she told her and because Lilimae wouldn't let her in, some men working for Gary's folks took her baby and she didn't see Lucy for fifteen years. Lilimae had said earlier at Val's dessert party that she felt shut out of Jeremiah and Val's lives and thought the way to be a part of it was to be famous. Val told Gary she didn't want a famous mama, she just wanted a mama.

Even after Val told Lilimae that she wasn't resentful that Lilimae wasn't successful, that it was about losing her baby, Lilimae still believed that everything would be OK if she were a famous singer. Gary made Val see that, right or wrong, if Lilimae thought she was right, that was her reason for what she did. Val was able to forgive Lilimae and wanted to start fresh, but the next morning Lilimae said she had to leave to go record a demo, still trying to become famous. Lilimae had brought Val's old doll with her and was going to give it to Val after she'd been there awhile. Val sees her mother off and tells her that she loves her, after which Val finds the doll on the bed.

She hugs it to her and sings the song her mother used to sing to her when she was little.
