Eric rides into the cul-de-sac on his bike and sees Ginger outside. She has her little sister, Jill, with her, and introduces Eric. Eric offers Jill the use of his sister's bike, but they end up playing basketball first. Karen hasn't gotten over the surprise of finding out that she's pregnant, and pulls into the driveway, not noticing that Eric is playing basketball with a girl. Eric and Jill go to a movie that night.

When Karen tells Sid that she's pregnant, she says she's 37, she knows who she is and she likes her life. Sid is thrilled when Karen gives him the news, but Karen says she doesn't know what to do. Sid doesn't see that there is anything to decide about.

In the morning, Sid and Karen are talking loudly about whether Karen has a right to decide about the child she's carrying and will have to take care of, when Diana walks into their bedroom and asks what all the yelling is about, and who's having a baby. Sid tells her that her mother is.

Karen and Diana argue, and Diana goes into the kitchen where Eric and Michael are eating breakfast. She tells Eric and Michael about the baby, and they all decide that Karen is too old to have a baby. Karen walks in and hears Diana talking to the boys. Moments later, Val knocks on the back door and comes in. Michael immediately tells Val that his mother is pregnant.

Eric and Jill are hanging out at the beach with Jill's friends. Eric already feels uncomfortable with the beer drinking going on. When Jill mentions that she's cold, Eric tries to put a blanket around her, but she'd rather he warm her up. She kisses him, but he says it's getting late.

She tries to kiss him again, but he says he's going home. That's Gary Sinise playing the friend of Jill's who's handing out beers.

From the moment Karen tells Sid she's pregnant, he thinks it's wonderful news. She tries explaining that at this point, the kids are older and she can now do things she's always dreamed of doing. Sid tells Karen that when she became pregnant with Diana and they got married, he had to give up his dream of being a race car driver.

But it's OK because he's got Karen and the kids, which is enough for him. He doesn't understand that it's not enough for Karen.

Sid, Eric, Michael and Diana go roller skating on the boardwalk at the beach. They discuss how it'll be with a new baby. Michael and Eric think it's a great idea, but Diana doesn't. Sid tells them that they need to be terrific kids so Karen will want a fourth little Fairgate.

While Sid and the kids are out, Karen finds a drawing one of the boys had made when they were younger. It's a drawing of their family around a Christmas tree. After seeing the picture, and thinking about her children, Karen decides that she wants the baby.

When Sid and the kids arrive home, Karen announces that they're going out to dinner to celebrate because they're having a baby and she feels terrific. While at the restaurant, Karen miscarries. The next morning in the hospital, Karen tells Sid she's sorry about the baby. Sid says they still have everything they had before, and Karen says she was too old anyway.

She's OK, but she begins to cry when they see a new mother with a baby as they're leaving.

Laura and Richard are washing their cars, but they're beginning to concentrate more on getting each other wet with the water hose and the bucket of water. Jill and Eric are playing basketball in the Fairgate's driveway again, Kenny is taking photographs of them, and Val, Gary and Ginger are all watching them play. Karen and Sid arrive home from the hospital. Everyone was worried about Karen, but she seems to be herself again. (Oddly enough, this would be Monday morning, yet no one seems to be getting ready for work or school.)
