Sito tells the board she was flying on sensors which is pilot code for she was flying under the hood. Captain Picard, Admiral Brand, and Captain Satelk tell her this is a lie because in formation flying pilots must use hand signals, radio calls, and paint markings on their aircraft and on the ground to line up to perform a maneuver. Flying under the hood is dangerous and thereby illegal in formation flying, thereby marking Sito's statement as a lie.

Answer: No

Jean Hajar is lying she did not file a flight plan and their route took them into Titan's gravity well out of range of the course. Brand caught her in this lie, and was angry for what they did. Nick Locarno stands up and accuses Josh of being a coward, which almost gives Josh's father a heart attack. Wesley and Jean rebuke him for saying that.

Answer: Inverted Barrel

Nova Squadron was in the Inverted Barrel Formation, which is the set up for the direct cause of the crash. Wesley was asked if the ships were in Diamond Slot Formation he answered no because for diamond slot, delta, and parade each fighter must be next to each other in the photo and they need to be right side up.

Answer: Boothby

Captain Picard is about to grill Wesley, but before he does that he needs to talk to his mentor Boothby, who is the academy's groundskeeper. Boothby is mad that the cadets mowed down his flowers. Captain Picard helped him replant the bed and asked Boothby for a social profile on each of the cadets. Boothby tells Picard about Nick Locarno, who, after winning the Rigel Cup, held a massive party on the grounds which destroyed his flower beds. Boothby hints Nick Locarno is a bad example, and you will see why when I give you the answer to the mystery.

Answer: He was draining his cooling tanks

Wesley opened his coolant interlock. According to Data and Geordi, this needed to remain closed for flight, but was open and was the direct cause of the crash.

Answer: Kolvoord Starburst

Wesley identifies the graphic as the Kolvoord Starburst which is illegal. The Kolvoord Starburst was banned because five cadets from Kirk's time did it, and all five died. When a Kolvoord Starburst is performed all five ships are in the Diamond Slot Formation and instead of doing a Yeager Loop and forming up for a Delta Roll, they do an Inverted Barrel Roll and enter Inverted Barrel Formation with each ship upside down. Next the leader gives the signal for smoke, and instead of turning on their smoke they open their coolant tanks and vent their warp plasma.

The ships then break formation and turn so the engines face the plasma trails and ignite the plasma. The reason this is dangerous is because the exploding plasma can generate subspace shockwaves which can damage or destroy ships.

Answer: Truth

"The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth-- whether it's a scientific truth or a historical truth or a personal truth. It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based. Now, if you can't find it in yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened you don't deserve to wear that uniform. I will make this simple for you, Mr. Crusher. Either you come forward and tell Admiral Brand what really took place, or I will. Dismissed!" After being grilled by Captain Picard Wesley goes to Nick and tells him the gig is up, and if he does not come forward and testify they will all be expelled. Nick does not believe him, calls Captain Picard a liar, tells Wesley to resign, and storms out.

Answer: Wesley implicates Nick, and clears Josh

Wesley says that Josh did not let the team down, which contradicts Nick's statement where he called him a coward. With this evidence Nick is implicated for the accidental death, and Brand tells Nick to come forward, he does not answer and Brand dismisses everyone except Nick and Jean.

Answer: Nick

Nick does come forward and admits what he did. Besides causing Josh's death before the trial, he went into Starfleet Investigations during the middle of the night while Wesley was reading his speech and erased 90 seconds of video and audio from Wesley's black box.

He also forced his squadron to do something dangerous. Nick Locarno turned himself in and protected the team. Jean was transferred to Operations, but her license and flight privileges were suspended. Sito Jaxa took Wesley's place on the Enterprise as Conn Officer, but she was killed by the Cardassians a year later when they destroyed her ship.

As for Wesley he stayed at the academy for a year and then resigned to help the Traveler finish his mission.
