Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sort of insects were bothering the Doctor during much of "Heaven Sent"?

Answer: Flies

Flies were buzzing around during much of the episode. "Heaven Sent" picks up from where "Face the Raven" leaves off. The Doctor teleports into a mysterious castle where he is chased by a shrouded figure. Over the course of the episode, the Doctor must solve a series of puzzles.

To see the Doctor face off against spiders, check out "Planet of the Spiders" (1974). The Tenth Doctor faces off against a giant wasp in "The Unicorn and the Wasp" (2008).
2. What was the number of the room the Doctor was searching for in the castle?

Answer: 12

The Doctor digs in the garden and comes up with the message "I am in 12". He eventually finds room 12, which contains an enormous crystal wall with the word "Home" engraved on it. The Doctor assumes the TARDIS is hidden behind the wall.

12 could be a reference to Capaldi being the 12th Doctor. 11 was the door that held the Doctor's greatest fear in "The God Complex".
3. What was the shape of the hole with the mysterious arrows around it?

Answer: Octagon

It was an octagon. The story doesn't really explain why the octagon was significant, or even why the hole itself was significant.

Among the great lines in "Heaven Sent": "The first rule of dying: Don't" and "Hell is heaven for bad people."
4. What were the maximum number of minutes the Doctor had before the creature would catch up with him?

Answer: 82

The Doctor had calculated that he would avoid the shadow creature for 57 minutes, but that he could maximize that time if he placed distance between himself and the creature. The 82 minutes ties back to the cryptic comment the Doctor made to the young boy in "Face the Raven" about "Remember 82."
5. What word did the Doctor trace in the sand over and over again?

Answer: bird

Bird, bird, bird, yes the bird is the word. The last message the Doctor gives to himself before he disintegrates (warned you about spoilers) is to scrawl the word "bird" in the sand.

Bird is a reference to "The Shepherd Boy", a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm in which a king asks a shepherd boy profound questions. The last is "how many seconds of time are there in eternity?" The boy tells the story of the bird who wears away a diamond mountain with its beak.
6. How long had the Doctor been trapped in the castle the very first time he looked at the stars (according to him)?

Answer: 7000 years

The first time the Doctor mentions the stars, he says that 7000 years had passed. At first he thinks this is a trick played by the castle, but ultimately comes to realize that he had been stuck in the castle for millennia.

This was around the time that the Doctor considered giving up, and Clara refused to let him admit defeat.
7. According to the Doctor, what was the wall that he was pounding on made of?

Answer: Azbantium

The Doctor said the wall was made of azbantium, a substance 400 times harder than diamonds. The Doctor faced a wall twenty feet thick that he had to wear away. He told the story of "The Shepherd Boy" and managed to strike the wall several times before the Veil grabbed him.

Adamantium is a virtually indestructible metal in the Marvel comics universe, and is probably best known for its use in Wolverine's skeleton. While the Doctor refers to the wall as "diamond" he was explicit that it was made of azbantium. Dalekanium is the highly durable substance used in the body armor of Daleks.
8. How long had the Doctor been trapped by the time he broke the wall?

Answer: 2 billion years

When the Doctor said "I will never, ever stop" he meant it.

In the final montage, the Doctor goes through a "Groundhog Day" series where he repeats his actions endlessly. Every now and then he notes the passage of time. For the record, the time references are: 12,000 years; 600,000 years; 1.2 million years; 2 million years; 20 million years; 52 million years; nearly 1 billion years; over one billion years, and 2 billion years.

Up until the 1970s, British numbering defined "one billion" as one million million (US trillion). Since 1974, both the UK and US have used billion to mean "1000 million." That's still a long time. 2 billion years ago, the most complex life form on Earth was a single celled organism.

As the Doctor notes, "That's one hell of a bird."
9. What planet was the Doctor standing on at the end of "Heaven Sent"?

Answer: Gallifrey

Monster spoiler: At the end of the episode, the Doctor finally breaks through the wall, which exposes the Veil to sunlight causing it to vanish. He is on a sandy planet, and talks to a young boy. The camera pans up and reveals the Citadel on Gallifrey.

The Doctor tells the Time Lords "The Hybrid, destined to conquer Gallifrey and stand in its ruins, is me." What exactly this means sparked wild debate on the Internet, and the trailer from the BBC did not help.

Gallifrey is the homeworld of the Time Lords, frequently mentioned but last seen in "The Day of the Doctor" when the collective power of 13 Doctors managed to place the planet in a pocket universe.
10. Since it's the penultimate episode of series 9, of course Steven Moffat wrote it, but who directed "Heaven Sent"?

Answer: Rachel Talalay

Rachel Talaly, a native of Chicago, has been working in films and television since 1981. Her directorial debut was "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" (1991). She has directed a wide range of TV shows, from "Ally McBeal" to "Without A Trace." In the "Doctor Who" universe, she directed the series eight finale "Dark Water/Death in Heaven" as well as the series nine finale "Heaven Sent/Hell Bent".

Peter Bennett was one of the BBC producers on this episode. He worked on "Torchwood: Children of Earth" before working on "Doctor Who". Along with Nikki Wilson, he has produced series eight and nine.

Jami Reid-Quarrell played the Veil, the creature that was chasing the Doctor. Reid-Quarrell played Colony Sarff, the bounty hunter who worked for Davros, in "The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar".

Murray Gold has been the musical director for "Doctor Who" since the series rebooted in 2005. He has written a great deal of amazing music over the last ten years, and "Heaven Sent" was a fantastic example. Great, great music that worked perfectly with the writing and acting.
